As much as Valeia respected other cultures, or at least tried to, one thing she could never understand was the Klingon view of pain. Why anyone would want to be in pain or have it inflicted on them intentionally was beyond the doctor, especially when she worked her entire life trying to heal injuries and prevent pain. Still, even if she didn't understand, she had to try and respect it. The bruising appeared to be minimal and certainly not life threatening so the CMO wasn’t in a position to insist, even though she wondered if perhaps security should know.
At the mention of Commander Horn, however, Valeia started slightly and was about to hurry off to find him and heal whatever damage the Klingon had inflicted on him when the unexpected invitation to eat with the XO was offered. For a moment the Betazoid was too stunned to reply, even as K’Nara moved towards the replicator. It was fairly clear this wasn’t an offer it would be a good idea to refuse, even as thoughts of having lunch with Naois and suspicion that the first officer was checking up on her to make sure she was eating ran through her mind.
“I’ll just have a Caesar salad.” Valeia requested politely, now slightly queasy at the sight of the moving plates. Once again reminding herself to respect other cultures, as one of the…worms?...actually made a sound as it was eaten, the doctor really had to force herself to take a bite of lettuce before washing it down with water. "Do the Ferengi show any signs of being tortured?" the Klingon asked, fortunately waiting to speak until after swallowing her mouthful of…food…
“No, there were no signs of torture in any of the patients I treated, and no one mentioned any signs in the other patients. I haven’t seen the Ferengi who were beamed directly to the brig. I could always stop by the brig on my way back.” Valeia replied before forcing another bite of salad into her mouth.
“Have you heard them say anything that may be important or of use to us in locating the Captain?" K’Nara asked next.
Shaking her head, and saddened at the mention of Brahms, Valeia replied, “No, but since I had to focus on the more serious injuries, my patients weren’t talking much. I did see Mel speaking with one of the less injured patients, but I don’t know why.”
Valeia paid close attention to every word the first officer was saying about red tape, understanding exactly what was being said behind the words. The doctor may not have had much experience with creating red tape but was very familiar with working through it. In response, she merely nodded, meeting the Klingon’s questioning gaze to indicate that she understood.
"Anything more on the alien Mr. Science claims was responsible for the attacks on the station?" K'Nara asked her next. "Has he fully recovered?"
“I released him into the custody of security, and he had almost fully recovered by the time I released him.” Valeia replied, making a mental note to see him in the brig when she went to check on the other Ferengi in the brig as well.
During the few moments of silence, Valeia could sense the Klingon was actually somewhat hesitant to ask the next question, which made the doctor nervous. She had managed to get through almost half of the salad, but even with K’Nara’s food gone, she couldn’t eat another bite, so placing the fork next to her plate, Valeia quietly sipped on her water and waited for the XO to say what was on her mind.
When the question came it was entirely unexpected. “Valeia…what can you tell me about Naois Mercy?"
Blinking wide-eyed at the acting Captain for a moment, Valeia was stunned to say the least, her mind racing with questions of why K’Nara could possibly want to know about her boyfriend. It didn’t make sense to the doctor in the progression of questions what the Captain had to do with anything, but in any case, she supposed it couldn’t hurt to talk about him.
“Well…he’s the Academy Commandant on Resurrection. He was my final instructor before being posted to the Phoenix. Before my arrival, he was seriously injured when a navigational cadet crashed a shuttle into the side of the starbase. She eventually died, but Naois survived. Part of final training before I graduated was to take care of him.” Valeia replied carefully considering each word before saying it as she didn’t know the meaning behind the question.
“There was a nurse who was stalking him. He filed a restraining order against her, but while I was caring for him, she injected him with a compound that still hasn’t been identified. He was nearly killed, but I managed to revive him, and she was taken into custody. After that, he instructed both Ensign Wolf and Ensign Science before the explosions on the station. Other than that…I don’t really know much more about him…professionally I mean.”
Leaning forward slightly, Valeia watched the Klingon’s reaction carefully before filing it away for later and finally asking. “With all due respect, Ma’am, why do you want to know about my…about Captain Mercy?”
