It had taken almost twenty minutes to get the Marco Polo stable. A nerve wracking twenty minutes for Brahms, then he noticed the massive ship slow before halting it's spin completely, then as he watched, it turned to face the Loki..
=^= D'BrooNi to Loki ... The Marco is fully stable now Captain ... We have an injured crewman and a captive ... The XO is securing, erm, her now ! =^=
=^= Well done .. Ok, I'm going to have another security team beam over to secure the ship .. I'm having Commander Horn and yourself beamed back here .. Have our 'guest' placed in the brig when the extra security people arrive, I'm sure her friend's will be pleased to see her =^=
=^= I very much doubt that Sir .. D'BrooNi out =^=
"Tauvo, any luck in pin-pointing that enemy ship yet ?" Brahms asked his Science Officer.
"No Sir ... But a vessel has just entered this sector at maximum sensor range, it's travelling at very high warp .. It's a Vulcan ship, the K'hiori .... "
"Time to her arrival ?" Marcus asked.
"Present speed, Seventy three minutes." Larraq replied re-checking his board for confirmation.
=^= Brahms to Sickbay =^=
=^= Gallen =^=
=^= Janel, the Vulcan ship, K'hiori is an hour away, I want Seleya and Harley ready to transfer the moment it get's here =^=
=^= They are ready now Captain, I have sedated Seleya to ease her pain, but we really need her Father to be here =^=
=^= He will be there shortly Doctor =^= said Brahms sympathetically. ' it isn't right that a child this young is so ill ' he thought.
~~~~~~~~~~
The Captain had spoken to Sheena Evans who in turn had organised a further away-team for the Marco Polo. They were in transporter room three awaiting deployment ...
"Comms, open a channel to the Polo." Brahms ordered.
"Channel open Sir."
=^= Commander Horn ... I am having both you and Commander D'BrooNi beamed back to the Loki .. You yourself will be sent directly to sickbay .. Stand by =^=
From the tone of his Captain's voice Horn knew there was a problem.
=^= Acknowledged =^= was his quiet reply.
=^= Transporter room three .. Transport when ready =^= said Brahms.
Nodding to the waiting personnel, Chief Stone began the transport sequence, and they vanished from the pad .. Second's later, two poeple appeared, but before they could solidify, they were gone ... Stones board showed green ...
=^= Transport complete =^= said Chief Stone.
Commander Horn blinked as he appeared in Sickbay, only just managing to take hold of his wife who had run to him even as he materialised ..
Melanie also did some blinking .. She hadn't expected to appear on the bridge ..
"Commander, my ready -room please." said Marcus, giving the view-screen a wary glance as he passed her ..........
Melanie followed Brahms in confusion. She certainly hadn’t expected to materialise on the bridge. She had expected to be sent straight to Gallen to be assessed after what had occurred on the away team. For one thing, despite her hatred of sickbay, she did want D’BrooNi to be checked out properly after the ordeal and she also wanted to know Brooks was really okay after the “incident” on the Marco Polo.
In truth, Mel felt responsible. She was the only one of full mind. She should have worked out what was going on faster, responded faster. Maybe if she had, she could of prevented Brooks getting shot.
Brooks had laughed it off, but under the console sorting the dampers afterwards Mel could hear he was in pain. Gathuit had managed to seal the wound and apply a coolant but could do no more until they returned to sickbay. Despite the low level it had been a first-degree burn. Brooks had managed to not black out, which most people would of done taking a shot at that short a range but he had mainly been running on adrenaline after that.
“I’m very much looking forward to your reports on what happened over there, however at the moment we have a more pressing matter,” the Captain came straight to the point making Mel force all these feelings away and focus.
Mel nodded as he continued. “The occupants of the cloaked ship that has been firing upon us have hailed us.”
“What do they want sir?” Mel asked curiously.
“Well that’s a question I need you to get answered,” Brahms said, a slightly annoyed look on his face.
“Sir,” Mel asked confused.
“They are refusing to speak with a male and will not recognise my authority. They insist on speaking with the most senior ranking female on board and that Commander is you,” Marcus told her.
Mel wasn’t sure exactly how to react to that statement. She was an engineer. Her diplomatic knowledge to date was from Academy courses, the odd reception onboard her last ship the Odin and Leiko’s memories only. She took a deep breath and then nodded at the Captain.
“Also Melanie, their weapon systems are far more advanced than ours,” Brahms added darkly as he indicated the door. Walking onto the bridge, Mel could feel everyone’s eyes on her as she went to the front and stood in-between the ops and cons stations. Brahms took the captains chair again as he nodded to the comm.’s officer,” Open a channel.”
Mel took a deep breath. “This is Lt. Commander Melanie D’BrooNi of the Federation U.S.S Loki.” The view screen changed to show to Mel’s surprise a being similar to the one from the Polo who had attacked them with her Maxuto. The only difference being it looked furrier than the one now unconscious in the brig and its fur had more silver in it possibly indicating an older being.
“You are the highest ranking female?” it asked looking her up and down. Mel felt uncomfortable. Masking that, she looked the cat being straight in the eyes and replied, “I am.”
She, Melanie presumed, on the information and experiences she had to date, moved her head slightly. Mel felt her self being sized up as it continued to stare. Then the alien moved her head slightly glancing at some of the men on the bridge, her features seemed to scowl. Finally after a long few moments it looked back to her and said, “Very well. I am Rakhi of the Wahiri.”
“What do you want with the Loki and Marco Polo?” Mel asked.
Commander Horn blinked as he appeared in Sickbay, only just managing to take hold of his wife who had run to him even as he materialised ..
"Whoah," Peter exclaimed as he barely managed to balance himself from the force of impact and the fierceness with which Harley hugged him and buried her face into his shoulder. "What is wrong Harley?" he finally asked, after regaining his bearings.
Harley pulled away from him and furiously tried rubbing the tears from her eyes. "It's Seleya," she sniffed, "Doctor Gallen's done everything she could for her but no treatment is working. She said Seleya is suffering from a very rare disease the Vulcans may know more about, though it has never been found in infants."
The young nurse hugged herself in despair as she looked up at her bondmate, her eyes wide with fright. "Captain Brahms said a Vulcan ship is close-by and they are willing to take myself and Seleya aboard and do the best they can for her."
"I am coming with you," Peter stated, his own expression mirroring his wife's grief.
"No," Harley insisted, "your place is here. You are the first officer and you have your duties to attend to. We'll be fine. This healer we're supposed to meet is an expert on this subject and seems to be really good with children. Gallen said her name is T'Val, and she has a young son of her own."
Peter reluctantly gave his consent, as he didn't really want to leave his wife and child alone in the hands of an unknown doctor. "Can I see her?" he asked anxiously, motioning past his wife. He hadn't seen his daughter for hours and was yearning to hold her, fearing that he may never be able to again.
"of course!" Harley exclaimed, "shes your daughter!"
Peter managed a feeble smile and walked over to the crib. He gasped as he watched his little daughter lying there attached to all kinds of equipment. Her short blonde hair was plastered to her face, her skin looking an eerie mix of pale green and pink. Carefully, he picked the unconscious girl up and felt her respond to his touch.
"She's got my telepathic skill," he announced in wonder, mixed with paternal pride, "she's responding to my touch!"
"Of course she is," Harley replied anxiously, "I really hope they hurry up, She's rapidly deteriorating."
Brahms sat in his seat .. His Chief Engineer seemed to be coping well with the situation he'd placed her in .. Larraq was discreetly signaling him .. Brahms casually rose from his seat, earning a scowl from the alien Captain as he did so, and walked over to his Science Officer.
"Tauvo ?"
Moving to place Marcus between himself and the viewscreen he began to speak quietly.
"Sir .. The Vulcan ship is only one hour away, either the Wahiri hasn't yet detected them, or, they don't see them as a threat."
Even though Vulcan was ahead in both shield and weapons development, there wasn't 'that' much in it now .. Brahms suspected that if they could slice through the Loki' shield's like a hot knife through butter, then they wouldn't have too much trouble with the Vulcan's.
"The K'hior must know we have company..." Brahms mused.
"I would have to agree Captain .. But as they are at maximum warp they won't get here any quicker. Also, I have checked with comms, all sub-space communication is being disrupted, there is no way of contacting them." finnished Larraq.
"Ok Tauvo, keep your eye on the K'hior .. Let me know if there are any changes. Also, try a discreet scan of that vessel."
"Yes Sir." said Larraq as Brahms seated himself once again.
"Commander." he said.
Melanie turned to face the Captain, as she did so Marcus saw his counterpart frown at one of her crew ....
"Cease your scan of my ship .. NOW." she barked .. A bolt of energy rocked the bridge !
"Captain." said Larraq, "That was only twenty percent of the energy their weapon's seem to be capable of."
"Stop all scan's." Brahms said, a little more than annoyed at being caught out.
"Now .... " said the Feline Captain, seemingly grinning at Mel, "Commander D'BrooNi ... We will speak !"
Melanie turned to face the viewscreen once more and swollowed, hard ..........
ooc: this is a JP between Rahki and D'BrooNi (Mel's first JP)
ic:
Rahki gazed at the female with interest; she had spots running down the side of her face and Rahki wondered whether they went all the way down or not. "Why are you tresspassing into Halken territory?" she demanded, trying hard to stare 'Spots' down.
Mel realised that to reason with this culture she needed to present herself as confident and authoritive as Rahki. She took a step forward. " We are not tresspassing. The Federation opened negotiations 50 years ago to colonise the Haines world. As a result of no group having an issue with it over the years we began the terraforming process and are now ready to populate."
"The Halkens can verify all this," Mel added.
"I'm certain they would," Rahki sneered, "but they had no right to authorize this. This is our world, we claimed it years ago. I am certain the person who authorized you lot was a useless male." She shot an angry look in Brahms direction, the captain standing behind the spotted woman, looking as though he had no interest in all of this. "Tell your male to make himself scarce," she demanded, "or I will do it for you."
Feeling very awkward at being forced to order Brahms off his own bridge, Mel turned and faced the Captain an uneasy look on her face. "You. Go wait in the ready room. You offend our guests." Brahms looked very irritated but complied. Mel hoped he would not make issue with her later. If Rakhi was going to negotiate or she get to the bottom of what was happening this was a necessity.
Turning back to the feline captain, she added, "I was at the original negotiations and can confirm that the Halkens representatives were both male and female."
"Are you not a little young to have been at these negotiations miss Spots?" Rakhi sneered, "my father was at those negotiations and he tells me otherwise. For a male, he was a very wise man, a rarity among my people." She would destroy this ship if necessary, but this female was brave, if not a bit too following in the male's orders. Federationists were weaklings, all of them. "We lay claim on this planet, that wreckage you call the Marco Polo, and if you are not careful, we lay claim on your ship too."
"Captain Rahki, with respect. My species is Trill. We are humaniods blended with sentient organisms in a symbiotic relationship. When I say I was there I refer to my symbiont which was attached to another host in those days. Leiko D'BrooNi." Mel said. The elder Captain looked at her and Mel thought for a second she saw her face register suprise at this information.
"Please state the nature of your claim to the planet and I can inform the Federation. I am sure we can rectify this situation peacefully," Mel added.
Rakhi's eyes widened in surprise, her ears now lying flat on her head and she hissed, her long tail lashing furiously. "Leiko D'BrooNi?" she hissed, "the wife of the spotted male who led the negotiations? Yesss, the name was familiar to me." Rakhi glared down at D'BrooNi. "Tell me Spots, do you now what your....predecessor caused?"
"I retain her lifetime memories, as I do from all previous hosts D'BrooNi has been joined with However if she was responsible for an incident this information was not relayed to Leiko or her husband during her lifetime," Melanie stated feeling her cheeks flush. She knew the aliens were bluffing about being at the proceedings but couldn't shake the feeling they had prehaps been observing covertly.
Curious, she stared at Rakhi. "Please enlighten me."
"You said Leiko was present at the negotiations," Rahki started, her eyes narrowing in anger, "if she was the wife of the diplomat then it was she who seduced my father! And now, you all are going to pay for that!" She signaled her gunnery sergeant and powered up their prow weapons. "Fire," she ordered and watched as the Loki shook violently.
"I can destroy you if I so desire," Rahki continued, "but that would be a waste of valuable material." She motioned for her operations sergeant to scan the ship, and seconds later she knew that they had just the person she wanted in her holding cell. "Goodbye Spots," she sneered, "perhaps we will talk some more later. For now, I have business to attend to."
Mel opened her mouth in shock, immediatly seeking verification from Leiko but her previous host offered nothing. "What in the galaxy . . ." she started out subconsciously forgetting she was on the bridge briefly but was interupted.
"Chief. The ship transported the Captain from the ready room," an ensign reported from behind her. Spinning round in shock, Mel looked at him. "Restablish communications now."
"What do you want now!" Rahki snapped, "do you have a deathwish Spots?"
"I wish to discuss this now," Mel said bravely. She motioned to Pharell to get the FO back on the bridge.
"But I do not," Rahki bounced back, her fur standing on end and her tail lashing in anger, "I will call you if I want to talk. Now, I have to tend to my .... guest. Goodbye." Rahki signed off again, and headed down to the holding cell area. "Brave crew you have," Rahki sneered down on Brahms, "but I have you now and you are going to provide me with the information I need. Now you can do this freely and go unharmed, or I can wreak a lot of damage on your frail body." She smiled brightly now. "Oh and your crew can try all they like to get you back, they won't find you on my ship....your signal is masked now."
Peter had just seen his wife and child off when the call came through for him to report back to the bridge on the double. "Now what," he muttered as he took a sprint back to the bridge. It had sounded urgent enough and when he arrived on the bridge he was nearly out of breath.
He immediately noticed two things: Melanie was seated in the centre chair, looking as though she'd just seen a ghost, and Brahms was noticeably absent.
"What is going on?" Peter demanded, as he walked up to D'BrooNi. "Where is captain Brahms?"
"Sir, the Captain asked me to try talk to the aliens and well, they took him," Mel said quietly biting her lip.
"They what!" Peter roared, suddenly extremely angry, "how could you have let this happen?" He was very frustrated, and not just because he had delivered his very ill daughter into the hands of a doctor rather unknown to him. "Get me those aliens."
The minute Rahki saw another male tried to talk to her, she instantly signed off again. This angered the Vulcan first officer even more. "Get them back," he snapped, then glared at the screen. "You will release my captain," he said, enunciating each word, "your ship may be more advanced than mine, but we have a few tricks of our own up our sleeves. Release my captain, now!"
Rahki merely laughed, amused at the male's anger. "Use your tricks then Pointy-ears," she challenged, "miss Spots beside you there is the only one I'll talk to. And I have a new pet now, I am thrilled you see. Though he's got to learn to be a good pet still...he's a feisty one, so I'll need to train him now...good bye." She signed off again, then signaled her operations chief to jam their signal. "That way they won't call for help. And keep an eye on that other ship. If it moves off, let it go, if it powers up weapons, destroy it."
"They what!" Peter roared, suddenly extremely angry, "how could you have let this happen?"
Mel had decided she was having one hell of a day. She had been ill from weightlessness, fixed her least favourite system, been unable to prevent her friend from being shot, almost lost her symbiote from one of the cat beings maxuto, thrown in at the deep end trying to talk with another cat being, publicly accused of a previous host having an affair and now yelled at by the FO.
And now it seemed she was experiencing something she never had before. Ever since Rakhi had mentioned her father, D’BrooNi had seemed to shrink away into the very deepest part of her and was now refusing to allow her to access most of Leiko’s memories of the Halkan’s conference years ago.
"Get them back," Horn snapped, then glared at the screen. "You will release my captain," he said, enunciating each word, "your ship may be more advanced than mine, but we have a few tricks of our own up our sleeves. Release my captain, now!"
Mel tried to probe D’BrooNi further but her symbiote totally blocked her. Mel gasped out loud in a mixture of shock, hurt, anger and confusion. She could feel tears beginning to seep down her cheeks as she processed what was to a joined trill betrayal.
"Use your tricks then Pointy-ears," Rakhi challenged, "miss Spots beside you there is the only one I'll talk to. And I have a new pet now, I am thrilled you see. Though he's got to learn to be a good pet still...he's a feisty one, so I'll need to train him now...good bye."
In that brief moment Mel lost herself as the dominant persona, something that had only ever occurred once at the joining. Her body literately leaped up and her voice seemed to change, as Leiko forced herself completely upon her, yelling out, “I did not have an affair with that beings father.” Fighting to be back in control, Mel was vaguely aware of everyone on the bridges spooked faces as she passed out.
Marcus had been about to speak when, without warning, he was beamed off his bridge ! .. Second's later he found himself face to face with several of the alien crew, he was on their vessel ...
"What the ...." he began.
A slap he didn't see coming connected with his lower jaw and he staggered backward's against the bulkhead.
"Silence." Shouted one of his captor's.
The Captain was having a conversation with his ship, that much he could hear. Commander Horn was demanding his safe return. Marcus couldn't see the viewscreen but he could tell from Horn's tone that he was not happy with his Captain's absence.
Rahki cut the communication and turned to look Brahms up and down, a definate look of distain on her cat-like features.
"Brave crew you have ... But I have you now, and you are going to provide me with all the information I need. Now, we ca ........ "
The rest of her monologue was completely lost on Brahms as he began to realise his situation .. The males on the bridge, obviously the weaker of the sexes, were totally subservient .. They cowered at every spoken word from the females. Marcus was not going to find the help he needed from them, they were ' far ' too terrified ... Brahms was, for the moment, on his own !!! ..........
"Mel!" Peter cried as he saw Melanie collapse. He barely caught her in time before her head could strike the deck. She hung limply in his arms and Peter wasn't quite sure what to do. As a last resort he lay her down on the command chairs, though he doubted she was comfortable. Yet it still beat spreading her out on the deck, which he was sure wasn't exactly clean.
"Mel wake up," he urged, his attention on the uncosncious officer, his captain's peril momentarily forgotten, "wake up, you are all we have to talk to these people. Do not fall ill on me now, I need you!"
~~ Wahiri ~~
Rahki noticed her new pet wasn't listening, seemingly focussed on something else. Quietly, she nodded for the female guard to lower the forcefield to admit her to the cell. Her claw shot out faster than Brahms could register and before he realised it he lay sprawled on the deck. "When I talk, you listen attentively pet," she snapped, picking him up from the deck.
The expression on Brahms face was priceless, so stunned as he looked. It was obvious that he couldn't quite comprehend what was happening. "And when I tell you something you'll reply with 'yes mistress' or 'no mistress', is that understood?"
Rahki narrowed her eyes in anger and curiosity as Brahms failed to respond. This time she struck him with extended claws, leaving four bloody marks on his left cheek. "Is that understood?" Rahki repeated as she advanced on him and struck at him again, this time on the other cheek. "Don't you pass out on me pet, remain on your feet until I tell you otherwise."
~Flashback~
Leiko smoothed down her Andorran silk dress over her hips and admired her reflection in the mirror. The colony conference was coming to a close, her husband tied up in the finishing stages and now negotiating to research some of the Halkan’s finds. Minor ambassadors and witnesses were no longer needed. Soon they would return home to Trill. This meant only a few more opportunities to have some fun with Rajik. And Leiko planned to make the most of them.
She giggled putting the finishing touches to her makeup, as D’BrooNi recalled happy memories from there secret tryst a couple of days prior. Finally she reached for her perfume spraying liberally as the doorbell chimed.
“Your early,” Leiko called a huge smile adorning her pretty features. “One moment.” One final flick of her honey blond hair and she moved over to the door, leaned against the doorframe alluringly and pressed the release button. It slowly hissed open. Leiko’s smile suddenly becoming an expression of confusion.
“Luloriau. I thought you left to go home,” she stuttered in confusion pulling her arms up hugging herself in embarrassment. The alien had been annoying showering her with far too much attention throughout the whole event.
Furry ears twitched. “I cannot go home beautiful Leiko. Not back to my world of female rule. I must make you mine.” There was something manic in his eyes. Leiko’s pulse began to speed up uncomfortably as he pushed past her inside, tail swishing the air. Eyes wide, she shook her head ready to order him out in a dignified manner. She did not get that chance because he lunged at her as the door closed behind them.
~Loki~
“NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo,” Mel screamed thrashing out wildly. She shoved him with all her might to the left hearing a satisfied thud. Seizing the opportunity, she bolted from the bed and tried to make a bid for escape but then he was right in front of her again. Her eyes seemed to blur.
“Chief calm down.” Reacting on pure instinct Mel swiftly dodged him again only to be grabbed by a second assailant. Her arms suddenly secured behind her back, Mel struggled with all her might hissing, “I won’t let you have me.” Everything blurred again.
“Mel. It’s ok. Calm down.” She knew that voice. The room seemed to begin to melt away. “Calm down,” it repeated as she breathed heavily in fear. Stopping struggling somewhat as the room seemed to blur into sickbay, she felt the hold on her arms loosening. Gallen was stood next to a bio bed in front of her blinking furiously. On the left hand side of the bed, a beige uniformed nurse was on the floor, rubbing her arm surrounded by a scanner and a hypo spray.
Her hands now free again, fell limply to her sides as Brooks appeared on her right. “Mel are you with us?” She closed her eyes again for several long moments, her breathing eventually beginning to calm, then opened them again to check she really was in sickbay before nodding mutely
Gallen seemed to approach her nervously and began running a tri-corder over her. “You collapsed on the bridge and they beamed you straight to us. You have been in an almost coma-like state for 20 minutes. Your isoboramine levels were through the roof. Ive only ever seen something like that during . . .”
“A joining.” Mel cut her off some things falling into place. She was shaking all over. “A joining or an intense mediative communion between host and symbiote.” Gallen nodded, checking her equipment as the medic on the floor pulled her self up again.
“Is that what happened?” Brooks asked.
She nodded. “D’BrooNi had been concealing something from me. It was fighting my questioning, but I was too stubborn so it used Leiko’s personality in force which made me pass out. Unconscious, I must of insisted my symbiote to come clean as the memories,” she flinched as another image from the attack appeared in her mind, tears forming. “I thought it might help. If I could understand. Rakhi said . . . .They have the Captain,” Mel said remembering suddenly. She shudded again as an image of Luloriau was suddenly right in her mind, making her subconsciously put her arms up to cover her face. Then she realised she was safe again lowering them.
“Your isoboramine levels are returning to normal,” Gallen said. “I want to administer a light sedative though” The doctor looked very concerned as she was still shaking and in tears. “You are in shock, Melanie.” She nodded and then felt awful as Janel’s nurse who she had evidently knocked down, moved forward with a hypo.
”I am so sorry,” she said. “That’s ok.” She replied softly as she pressed it to her arm and released the dose in a hiss. Mel choked back a sob wishing with all her might she hadn’t experienced those memories. D’BrooNi had been right to conceal it. Luloriau had been ripping her clothes off, Leiko pinned terrified and unable to fight back. Luckily for her, Rajik had appeared and managed to stop him before he could . . .. Mel just couldn’t stop shaking, tears streaking down her cheeks. Brooks moved forward, Mel catching a glimpse of a medical pack on his leg from the away mission earlier. He put his arm round her reassuringly.
“They still have Brahms and refuse to talk to anyone but you. Horn needs you back on the bridge as soon as possible so if you did find anything that can help . . .”he trailed off. Mel nodded.
“The Aliens were at the conference. Well only male ones. One attacked me, well Leiko . . . . Rahki’s father attacked, tried too . . .” she couldn’t voice that. “They had no issues with us having Haines back then.”
Mel looked up Gallen and her nurse staring back at her. “There has got to be something on that planet that they are after now” She reluctantly shook herself free from Brooks as some different memories now surfaced, possibly pieces of the puzzle. “I have to get back to the bridge and speak with Commander Horn.”
Marcus touched his cheek, even as the room began to spin and he ached from the sudden beating, he knew full well that he needed to get his senses back, quickly .. Almost as a show of defiance, he stood more upright, and, taking his eye's off his captor, looked down at his fingers. Judging by the amount of blood it must be flowing freely from the deep scratches, it certainly felt so !
It was then Brahms noticed that his right side was beginning to feel numb and a wave of nausea swept over him. The sickness didn't last but the feeling he was loosing control of one side of his body was increasing. He tried to raise his right arm but only managed to reach his waste before his leg gave way from under him and he fell against another of the females..
She hit him, hard, and pushed him against the bulkhead, She instantly received a crushing blow from her Captain for her trouble. The younger female spoke quickly but Brahms couldn't understand what was said. The comment though, seemed to enrage the Captain who landed a second blow, drawing blood ! .. The males, Brahms somehow noticed, had scampered to the far side of the bridge, obviously not wanting to get caught up in the females in-fighting.
Now the Captain turned her attention to Brahms once again ...
"Well my pet ... It seems my younger officer has some interest in you herself. Though, as you can see, I have 'explained' to her her error." she seemed to grin at Brahms before looking once again at the stricken female, extending her claw's which caused the youngster to involuntarily take half a step backwards.
"Toxin." was all Brahms could whisper ...
"What did you say, my pet ?" Captain Rakhi said.
"Toxin." Brahms tried to shout, but again it came as a whisper.
"Yessssssss." Grinned his Captor once again ..........
Peter was near enraged when he couldn't hail the alien vessel. Melanie had been taken to sickbay after she had gone into a seizure, and he wondered whether she was all right. He needed her on the bridge to talk to the aliens and negotiate the captain's release. "Horn to sickbay, has Commander D'BrooNi sufficiently recovered to resume her duties?"
On the background he heard the chief engineer argue with someone. “I have to get back to the bridge and speak with Commander Horn.” He heard the strain in her voice and decided that perhaps it was better if she remained in sickbay for now. He had noticed Ensign Ure coming back onto the bridge and after D'BrooNi and Gallen, she was the most senior female aboard.
"Negative commander," Peter continued, "you are to remain in sickbay until doctor Gallen deems it safe to release you. We do not understand what happened to you and the last think I would want is to risk your health. Yes you are needed, but not so urgently that you are the last female aboard this ship. I will not risk you commander. Remain in sickbay and regain your strength, that is an order." His anger carried through in his voice and he hoped that Melanie understood that it was not directed at her.
Peter turned towards the new arrival. "Ensign Ure, I want you to contact the alien vessel. They have abducted our captain and they will not talk to me." ~but eventually they will, when there are no females left with the rank of officer~ he thought grimly, as he stepped out of the way so that he would not appear on their viewscreen.
~~ Wahiri ~~
Rahki glanced down at her prisoner. Her toxins were working too fast on this human, other species had been more resilient and some had even proven to be immuni to it. However, some pure blooded species, among which the Vulcans, had shown even faster reaction to this toxin, despite their bodycontrol abilities.
Roughly, she pulled him back to his feet. "I told you to remain standing," she snapped at him, "are you such a weakling that you can't do as you're told? Don't force me to may you pay for your disobedience my pet. I will let it pass now because you are new to this, but soon you'll learn."
She pointed to one of her males, who stood cowering in a corner. "Moraka, teach him when I'm gone," she ordered, "make him feel what you feel when you're disobedient."
Moraka's ears flattened on his head in fear when he heard the order. "All of it mistress?" he querried carefully.
"All of it," Rahki repeated, then she leaned in to Brahms and carefully but deliberately licked the blood of his cheek. She could scent his fear, but even more so was the scent of his anger. Soon, he would know only obedience. "You could live a good life my pet," she purred, as she grabbed him by his hair, leaning in so they were face to face, "soon you'll break and tell me everything I need to know."
She laughed haughtily. "Miss Spots and Mister Pointy-ears will not save you. Is this Pointy-ears as stubborn as he looks...he could make a good pet too."
She glanced at the youngster she'd just given a sound beating. "Perhaps I'll let her have him......if you keep being a disobedient pet."
“Remain in sickbay and regain your strength, that is an order.” Horns voice said crisply before signing off.
Mel looked at Gallen who shook her head and said forcefully, “I know you are always trying to get out of my sickbay but not this time Chief. As I said you have had a shock from that incident and I intend to keep an eye on you. “ Mel opened her mouth again to argue further but the effects of the sedative were beginning to kick in so changed her mind and obeyed the doctor sitting back down on the bed.
Happy to discover the shaking was subsiding she even managed a weak smile as Brooks said, “Guess we are both stuck here.” Gallen seemed happy enough to leave her with the security guard and wondered into her office, Mel knew there would already be an unspoken agreement between the two to ensure she stayed put from previous experience anyway. She wiped her eyes, certainly a lot calmer now and tried to concentrate on the less frightening memories from after the attack her symbiote was now sharing.
“There has to be something on Haines world they want,” she repeated from earlier. Brooks nodded in agreement sitting down next to her before adding, “and they think the Captain has information about it perhaps.” She nodded back and was silent for several minutes thinking hard.
“Snowflake,” she said suddenly looking at Brooks wide eyed. “I need to look something up.” She started towards the nearest computer terminal but didn’t get far as Gallens sedative made her stumble woozily. The room seemed to swirl slowly like she was punch drunk.
“Whoa. Not a good idea,” Brooks said gently guiding her back as the doctor peeped out at them from her office across sickbay with an annoyed glare.
“No I need to check some things,” Mel said stubbornly trying to move again but Brooks clamped his arms on her shoulders making her stay put. She gave him one of her best glares, which wasn’t in honesty a patch on Gallen’s earlier effort causing him to chuckle. Gallen poked her head out and looked at them suspiciously for a few moments. Then convinced Brooks wasn’t going to let Mel try anything disappeared back in her office. Mel shot him her “only for emergencies” Leiko glare.
“Oh come on, don’t be like that.” He replied still chuckling. “ If Mohammed can’t get to the mountain, then someone can always bring the mountain to Mohammed.” Brooks seemed to materialise a PADD out of nowhere.
Grabbing it with a grin she almost felt like kissing him despite not knowing who Mohammed was.”
Marcus had staggered back against the bulkhead once again as the Rakhari Captain released her hold on him. She glared at the male she had spoken to then walked off the bridge.. The female that had incurred the Captain's wrath glared at the closed doors before turning to scrutinize Brahms.
The male was now stood beside the captain's chair. He was holding a small device in the tip's of his ' fingers' .. Almost as if holding it would cause him as much hurt it was meant to inflict on the wearer.
The female noticed the direction of Brahms' stare and looked herself. Her face, if possible, darkened at the sight of the male and what he was holding ...
"Give me that !" she demanded.
"Mistress, The Captain instruc .......... "
The blow, never seen by the male struck him below his jaw. It completely shattered the jaw itself before traveling upwards. Four razor-sharp claws made short work of his right eye as they raked scar's from jaw to temple. the male hit the deck some Ten metres away and moaned woefully, the female headed toward his prone form.
After wiping her bloody claws on it's fur, she reached down to take the device from his grasp. Without rising she extended one claw and placed it on his chest. The males eye's widened as her claw was pushed, very slowly, into his chest. There was no other sound but a small gasp as the male died ... she pulled her murder weapon from his chest and again cleaned the blood away.
"Remove that !" she said to another male as she rose. She walked over to where Brahms had witnessed the killing, turning the device over in her hands and grinned.
"Now Huuuuman." she hissed, "You are going to pay for the pain i have just endured at the hand of my Captain."
Marcus tried to shrink backward's, but he had nowhere to go ! ..........
The feline advanced on Brahms, who continued to backpedal until his back hit the wall of his cell. "Nowhere to hide, nowhere to run," the feline singsonged as she girl thingyfooted closer to him, her eyes narrow in anger.
"You're my pet now," she hissed at him as she raked her claws over his chest, tearing away his tunic and shirt. Next she placed the device over his heart and made a downward movement with it. She watched with delight as the human doubled over in agony.
"I never told you to double over my pet," she hissed, "you're to remain upright. If you fail to do as I say, you'll experience a terrible agony. You're in no danger of dying from my mistress' poison, but you will die if you remain disobedient. Disobey and you'll experience pain, obey and you'll have a pleasurable sensation coming over you."
Carefully she wiped the blood from his cheeks and held his face in her claws, almost gently. "Now....what is your ship doing here? Remember to answer truthfully. This device will tell me if you're lying and the consequences will be quite dire."
She ripped the rest of his shirt away. "You won't be needing this my pet," she chuckled, "why do you humans want to cover yourself up anyway." She plucked at the hair on his arms. "Oh, too little fur. Tell me, do you like my fur? Do you think I'm beautiful?" she purred, snaking her tail around his waist in an almost affectionate manner.
"You'll talk eventually," she continued, "unless you want us to start on your little friend? We've seen other prospect pets, but we've chosen you...don't you feel honoured in the slightest?"
Then she shrugged indifferently. "By all means, be disobedient," she chuckled as Brahms doubled over once more in pain, his breath coming in laboured gasps. She didn't even need to touch him to damage him. The device did it all for her. "I want my own pet, the exotic creature with the teinted skin and pointed ears." She leaned back against the wall, watching Brahms' reaction, knowing he was bordering on fury but she knew what'd happen if he chose to attack her.
Mel almost growled from frustration as the room seemed to keep swirling slowly from Gallen sedative and she was having no success finding what she was looking for on the PADD. A medic made a movement from the other side of sickbay making Mel jump slightly and turn to conceal the PADD. The nurse disappeared from view suspecting nothing.
Brooks sat down again and snaked his arm round her pulling her into a semi embrace. She raised her eyebrow trying to hide a grin playing on her lips. “Completely obscures vision of the PADD from that side of the room and more importantly the doc’s office,” he looked over his shoulder checking that Gallen’s attention was still elsewhere.
“Is that what you are doing?” Mel asked amused but secretly enjoying the contact.
“Hey if she catches you, I will be the one in trouble,” he pointed out flushing slightly before looking at the PADD and asking sheepishly “so what are you looking for anyway?”
“At the beginning of the Halkan conference all the delegates from different races brought goodwill gifts and there was a huge reception. The Halkan’s, less secretive back in those days, shared with everyone some archaeological finds, records in an alien language which looked similar to snowflake designs on earth. They said what they had uncovered was to do with genetics and had helped them with some advanced finds medically,” Mel said memories flooding back to her. “The reception was the first time Leiko had met both Rajik and Luloriau.” Mel shuddered slightly.
“Let me guess. We negotiated to research some of this information,” Brooks said.
Mel nodded. “My husband . . .. Ermmm Leiko’s husband” she corrected herself catching the expression on Brooks face, “was part of the federation negotiators. They turned their attention to that after the colony talks were finished.”
“Here,” she grinned after several more minutes, finally finding what she was after pointing. “Project snowflake. That’s original,” Brooks snorted as he peered down.
“Declassified 25 years later,” Mel said excitedly. “I think there’s a connection as the aliens had the same information we had.”
“I don’t care what the aliens had,” Gallen’s voice suddenly rang out behind them making both officers jump. Mel nearly dropped the PADD. The doctor moved in front of them, arms folded, expression stern. “I will take that.” She grabbed the PADD out of Mel’s hand mumbling.
“Patients. Why can’t you understand that when we say rest, you should rest? And you,” she poked Brooks chest,” you should know better. Especially where this one is concerned. How did you even get a PADD in here anyway?” she continued annoyed while looking it up and down. “Project snowflake,” Janel’s face changed expression. Despite her anger the subject caught her interest.“We learnt about this in med school.”
“What can you tell us?” Mel said starting to get excited they might be on to something that could help understand what the aliens might be after and get the Captain back.
Janel opened her mouth to continue but was cut off as a medic yelled out, “Gallen. The alien captive is waking up.”
The pain was like nothing he could imagine. It felt as if his whole body was, at the same time, being subjected to a massive electric shock as well as being on fire !. He doubled over once again. He was incapable of controlling any of his bodies reactions to the device they were using on him.
Somehow though, During all that pain his mind registered words the female had spoken, her reference to Horn .. She was threatening to pluck his First Officer from the Loki .. Somehow, he had to prevent that !
"Water ....... " he croaked.
"What was that my pet ... Are we now in more of a talkative mood ?" she whispered in his ear.
"Can't speak ..... I .. need ....... water ..." Marcus rasped.
Brahms knew full well that this tactic to delay her was not going to work for long, but it was all he could think of in his present state.
She turned to one of the males, who's eyes bulged at suddenly becoming the center of her attention.
"Get some water .. Wet his lip's ONLY .. Do you understand me !"
"Yes Mistress." he said cowering from her reach.
Standing between Brahms and the female, he touched a cloth to Brahms' lips .. for an instant, the two locked eyes .. Did Marcus see something there, just for a second ?. He didn't have time to get a second glance as the female smashed the young male on the side of his head, Causing him to cart-wheel across the room !
"Now ... Speak. Or I will have to entertain another guest. One that may be of more use. And leave you to the Captain."
Marcus had just enough time for his mind to register the sudden increase in pain ..... Then he passed out ! ..........
The female hissed in anger and pulled the male towards her by his ear. The male whimpered in agony as she twisted his sensitive ear. "I thought I told you to wet his lips with water, you idiot, what did you give him!"
"Water mistress," the male feline yowled, cowering at her feet as he offered her the damp cloth, "just water mistress as you ordered."
The female sniffed the cloth then kicked the male aside. "Very well, you're excused to have a bit of rest."
"Thank you mistress, that's very kind of you mistress," the male groveled as he scurried away.
"Useless," the female hissed, as she picked Brahms up by the front of what was left of his uniform. In one quick motion, she tore that off him as well, then upended the bucked of freezing cold water over him, striking him forcefully on each cheek.
"I didn't give you permission to sleep," she snapped, as Brahms' eyes fluttered open, "stand up, useless creature that you are." She pressed the device on his chest again and saw Brahms' eyes widen in agony and surprise.
"What are you doing in Halkan space," she repeated, though she was growing readily tired of that.
~~ Loki ~~
Peter regarded Ure as she conversed with Rahki. "I am going to visit our prisoner," he suddenly stated and left the bridge in a hurry. Perhaps their prisoner would be more forthcoming, and now that he crew what she could do where mindcontrol was concerned, he would be prepared for it. "What were you doing on the Polo?" he questioned the female feline in the brig, as he signaled the holographic guards to let him in, but keep close watch on his well-being.
"And why did Rahki abduct my captain?" he pressed, advancing on the smaller feline. From her size, Peter assumed she was still quite young, perhaps just barely still a cub or kitten. "We will let you go if you co-operate and help us get our captain back," he promised, though he knew he'd never be able to keep that promise.
~Brig~
Lysoriu bit back a moan from the pain the aliens beam weapon had inflicted. She forced herself to consider that yes she had underestimated the males and her Maxuto abilities. She was surrounded irritably by more of the male beings seemly quarantined away. She was strapped to the bed and could not move.
A quick attempt to gain access to the guard’s thoughts proved them to not be real. A trick! Clever and designed to irritate as they were male images. Looking down at her stomach she could see she had been treated and bandaged up. No doubt the aliens will of taken scans and be working on a way to combat her Maxuto chemically. At the moment she was too weak to try anyway. Also as some kind of monitoring device seemed to be on her chest they would probably know she was awake, she reasoned.
This was confirmed quickly as the pointed eared one from the Polo ship walked in. She growled in irritation, these federation people were weak. They had far too many males.
What were you doing on the Polo?" The pointy eared being barked. "And why did Rahki abduct my captain?" He seemed to observe her up and down before then adding. "We will let you go if you co-operate and help us get our captain back,"
Rahki, the name sent a shiver down her spine and she must have shown her fear in her face, as the male seemed to catch it. Rahki was legendary and ruthless. Her violence inspired youngsters and frightened them at the same time.
“If you don’t cooperate we will hand you over to your people. Perhaps we can trade you for our Captain.” The pointed eared one stated sternly. Even though she was weak she had known straight away the male was lying about letting her go if she cooperated, he certainly was not lying about handing her over to Rahki. She would be made an example of in the worst possible way for what she tried to pull. There was no option. Swallowing her pride she suffered the ultimate humiliation.
“I am Lysoriu of the Wahiri. I am prepared to negotiate in return for asylum from Rahki.”
~Sickbay~
“Gallen. The alien captive is waking up.” Mel jumped, spinning round in panic. Was the alien in sickbay? Visions of Rahki’s father flooded to her mind again.
“Its okay Mel, the aliens in the brig. We have taken steps to ensure it won’t harm anyone else,” Gallen reassured her. “In fact their physiology is similar to Etexons and they seem to excrete a controlled hormone which was responsible for confusing you all and influencing your thoughts. Your symbiote was able to filter it out for you albeit painfully.”
“Can you find a away to stop the affects of the Maxuto?” Brooks asked as Mel mentally calmed herself down.
Janel smiled. Despite being unable to help poor Seleya she had managed this. “Yes, we have a couple of drugs that we think injecting our people will counteract the Maxuto, did you say?”
Mel nodded. “That’s good news.”
“Well now she’s awake we can test the affects,” the doctor added. “Now what were you asking? Project snowflake. It was to do with genetics but they never did disclose where they got the starting information.”
“It was Halkan,” Mel said seeing Janel’s eyebrows raise in surprise.
“Well the information told of procedures to extend life expectancy. We tried to apply it to Humans, Vulcan’s, Klingons etc but it was incompatible with most races in the federation. The project was discontinued shortly after those results.”
“Then declassified 25 years later,” Brooks mused. “I’m going to beat money the Halkan’s continued researching.”
“Of course,” Mel said suddenly clicking. “The pictures all look the same.” What if it’s not his grandson but it’s him. Actually him. Leiko suddenly screamed in Mel’s head.
Gallen nodded in agreement, “I was curious about that and was planning on asking the Halkan delegates when we arrived to liase with them.”
Purely speculating now, Mel’s head was clicking. “What if their archaeologists translated or uncovered more information. What if the ancient alien race settled on more than one planet in the system?”
“I see where you’re going,” Brooks joined in as Gallen looked pensive. “What if Haines world has stuff left behind from this race too and the aliens want it?”
“It could explain why they are against the colonisation now 50 years later,” Janel said nodding. “We should speak to Commander Horn with these suspicions.
The female hissed and shook Brahms violently .. She was tiring of this. This weak male was more stubborn than they thought. If the device was used at even a slightly higher setting it would kill him outright.
She threw Brahms against the bulkhead once again, frustration cursing through her .. Without a word she stormed from the bridge, leaving just two males to watch him.
"Let the Captain have him" she seethed.
Brahms was beginning to regain his senses. he could see the two males watching him. but something seemed different, something had changed. Maybe it was the way they were watching the doors the female had gone through, he didn't know.
As he watched, one of the males touched a control, and the barrier holding Brahms disappeared. Without warning, the larger of the two males knelt before the other and the smaller one hit him twice, two rapid blows that killed the alien instantly ...
"Do not concern yourself Huuuman." the killer said, "My clan-mate sacrificed himself so you, we, could be freed."
"But ...." was all Brahms could manage.
"We have been in the service of the females of our race since our records began. We ourselves have been on this ship for Thirty Four of your years." it continued.
Brahms had been moving forward to get a look at the controls.
"Come." the male said, gesturing for Brahms to approach, "These controls disable the shields and weapons. It will be detected the instant it is done, and will not take long to rectify."
"Communications ?" Brahms prompted, his eyes darting from the controls, to the doors, and back to the alien.
"There." pointed the male.
Marcus took a deep breath and touched the panel ...
=^= Loki .. Commander Horn .. This is Brahms =^=
Horn's startled voice replied.
=^= Captain ? =^=
=^= I don't have time to explain Peter. Contact the Vulcan ship. I am about to disable the weapons and shields of this vessel. The instant the shields drop, open fire with everything you have..... =^=
=^= But Captain, you are sti ......... =^=
=^= Follow my orders Commander ... If this vessel's weapons come back on-line you are to break off and head for Starbase Unification at maximum warp .. =^=
=^= Captain .. What abo ...... =^= ..... as Horn was speaking the tell-tale shimmer of a transporter beam appeared on the Loki's bridge. Brahms appeared !
Realizing that the male had sent him back to the Loki Brahms began to repeat his orders.
"Sir." said Larraq, "The alien ship's shields have dropped, engines and weapons are off-line !"
Brahms looked at the screen ..
"ALL WEAPONS .... FIRE !!!" ..........
"Fire?" Peter querried, stepping in to face Brahms, "what about the person that saved you? Do we not have an obligation to get him out of there?"
When Brahms seemed to ignore him, Peter turned to Dexter. "Beam whoever was in the captain's vicinity out, beam them directly to sickbay. Assuming it was a male, doubtlessly he will be in a bad shape."
Pleased to see Dexter obey the order without question, Peter turned back to Brahms. "With all due respect captain, you look like hell. I suggest you report to sickbay at once." The look the first officer gave his captain was non-negotiable.
"Alien vessel crippled," Larraq reported from the science station, "they're venting plasma, but they're charging weapons. Sir, I suggest we get the hell out of here."
Peter couldn't agree more with the romulan science chief. "Set course for Unification, maximum speed!" he yelled over the noise as a weapon's blast hit their shields.
"Shields down 30%" Larraq reported, "I really suggest we move!"
"Engineering, report!" Peter yelled, as he forced Brahms down in the nearest seat, "D'BrooNi, report to engineering stat! We need your expertise down there. Gallen, prepare to receive a patient!"
Peter turned just in time to see Brahms' shocked expression before he was beamed straight to sickbay. "Ure you have the bridge, I am going back to question our female alien guest. I doubt she will want to die if we get destroyed. She will have to earn her place in an escape pod, if it comes to that."
Without another word, he darted off the bridge and through the corridors, colliding headlong with one of the female security guards posted outside the holding cell area. Dazed, peter got back to his feet then helped the girl up. "Is our prisoner talking yet?" he asked as he wrenched his eyes shut to keep the corridor from moving on it's own accord.
"Nope," the girl replied, "she's just sitting there, apparently sulking."
"I have an idea," Peter suggested, "but you cannot inform Brahms as he has specifically forbidden me to do this in the past." At the girl's confused glance, he beckoned her to watch his back as he entered the cell. He was prepared for the alien's Maxuto and now that he knew what it was he could effectively block out its effect.
Slowly, he advanced on the female creature, then gripped her face with both hands, sending his own mind into hers, searching for the desperately needed information. He knew it was extremely dangerous to do, as she would probably be able to rip him to shreds with his claws, but he counted on her being too stunned to react.
~Sickbay~
Sickbay shook with an incredible force. Gallen fell to her feet as Mel only just managed to keep a grip on the Bio bed she was sat on.
“They shot us,” Mel reasoned once the shaking subsided. “Janel you have to let me get back to Engineering.”
The doctor opened her mouth to argue again as Brooks held a hand out to pull her back up but the first officer’s voice cut her off.
"D'BrooNi, report to engineering stat! We need your expertise down there. Gallen, prepare to receive a patient!" Mel didn’t need telling twice and was up and out of there. The effects of the sedative were wearing off. She’d made it down the corridor and was waiting irritably for the nearest turbo lift when she heard a yell behind her.
“Hey Mel. Wait one sec.” Brooks had followed her looking nervous. “Ermmm . . .. Listen presuming the bad guys don’t blow us up, I would really like to take you out?” The turbo lift doors finally hissed open.
Smiling Mel nodded, “That would be nice.” Brooks grinned as she stepped into the lift more determined than ever not to let the aliens damage the Loki.
~Brig~
Lysoriu had no time to react. The pointed eared one was back and had grabbed her head. The she felt him in her mind; probing then as she attempted to fight back mentally he got more forceful. She could tell he was desperate. So Rahki had opened fire on them and was now in pursuit.
Earlier she had swallowed her pride attempting to negotiate not to be handed over to Rakhi but he had been called away. After mulling over her lapse of weakness, her pride had ensured that she had refused to speak out again. She recalled her failed attempt to take possession of the Marco Polo. Her sneaking onboard as the others took the federation colonists to the Halkan home world out of the way so they could move forth and examine Haines themselves. Rakhi would certainly kill her for trying to take advantage of the situation for her own gain.
Horn – she was able to get a name from pointy ears. It seemed this mind attack could let information 2 ways. He blocked her further access to his memories as he realised she had managed to acquire some knowledge. Out loud Horn sounded irritated, “You will tell me what is going on.” This was getting painful now. She wanted to claw his eyes out, rip out his insides but was still strapped down and too weak.
Information about her people’s war with another race and their desperation to beat them, the Wahiri’s powerful hatred for the federation allied with some other beings and their recent Intel from the Halkan’s that other planets in the sector had ruins and secrets left behind flew forth. The Wahiri would not allow the Federation to have them nor did they believe their terraforming of the planet in question had turned up nothing.
She felt like she would black out from the pain of the mental link between them but before she did Lysoriu mustered enough power to say out load. “Rahki will destroy you and me regardless of the Haines situation. You have angered her now.” Lysoriu passed out as Horn jumped back mentally drained.
Brahms seemed in a daze .. He had a vague recollection of his Executive Officer questioning his fire order and something to do with the alien male ... He couldn't get it straight in his head, he felt Horn easing him into his chair, moments later felt the tell-tale sign of a transport. He arrived in Sickbay ...
"Take a seat Captain, I'll be with you in a moment." ordered the Doctor.
Brahms was about to protest but seeing the look on Galen's face persuaded him otherwise.. The ship lurched sideways as it was hit and Marcus jumped off the bed and moved towards the doors.
"SIT down Captain." said Janel from next to D'BrooNi, "Please don't have me make it an order !"
Mel looked from her Captain to the Doctor and back, she knew full well that Galen could do as she said, would she, was another matter !
Brahms stopped and turned just in time to see his Chief Engineer vanish from Sickbay .. Galen was his Chief Medical Officer and could carry out her threat. He returned to the bed as the Loki shook yet again from a hit on her shield's. He touched his comm badge ...
"That won't work either Captain .. I've asked the computer to deactivate it for the time being ..."
"You cannot do tha ...." Brahms began to protest.
"I can, and I have ... I can also officially relieve you of Command if you wish." she said, then continued as Marcus seemed about to speak, "Captain. You have an excellent First Officer, let him do his job. 'IF' you are needed the bridge will let inform me. Until that time I would at least like to begin treating your injuries."
It was only then he noticed the state he was in ... His top had gone, he was covered in dried blood, his or someone else's, he didn't know ... and he ached ... badly ... He sat down once again on the closest bio-bed, as the Loki shook violently yet again ..........
Engineering was a bustle of activity as Mel entered. Casey, spotting her, walked over looking relieved. “You’re back. Is everything ok chief?”
“I’m fine thank you.” Mel added noticing several of her staff giving her funny looks and seemed to be whispering. She caught the word “possessed” and rolled her eyes in amazement at star ship gossip.
“Report?” she said to Casey loudly, letting everyone know she was back and all business. Certainly not possessed in any way. The whispering stopped immediately.
“Currently we are being pursued by the alien vessel. The bridge has set course back to Unification,” Casey replied. “Mel. Any news on the Captain?”
Everyone’s eyes were suddenly on her. “He’s safe and back onboard the Loki,” she said putting the crews mind at rest.
Mel continued. “I want more people monitoring the engines and I need reports on the damage that blast just did to us. We need to reinforce the shields people. Believe me the Captain of that ship is not going to stop. These beings are not nice.” Mel said wincing as she had a mental image of Rahki’s father in her mind again, quickly followed by the state Brahms had been in when they beamed him to sickbay.
Peter leaned against the side of the cell, weakly waving the holographic security officers off. He was physically and psychologically drained, but he didn't get the information he needed. He had learned about the hatred against the Federation and their determination to keep them from getting Halkan's world, but he needed to know why.
Ignoring the jolts of the Loki, he advanced on the feline again. "I must know," he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. He knew he had to succeed, if he were to save the lives of those aboard the Loki. "Why must we not succeed on getting Halkan's world, and how can we beat the Wahiri?"
He pressed both hands against her face, finding the katra points without effort and his mind spiraled into hers again. But he was too weak to keep her out of his mind, and he didn't care as long as he found what he was looking for. He sent his mind deeper into hers, fully aware that it was extremely dangerous to do so, especially in his already weakened state. He knew full well that he was causing the feline agony and he regretted having to do so, but right now the needs of the many were at stake. His friends and his family; his mother had gone with Harley and Seleya to the Vulcan vessel and he knew they'd be safe there.
On the bridge, Sheena Evans jumped down over the railing and into the command seat the minute she entered the bridge. Seeing as both captain and first officer were gone, and none of the other ranking officers seemed to want to take command she thought now would be a good opportunity to show her skills. "Evasive maneuvres!" she yelled, "bank hard to port and evade those destructive beams. You there!" She pointed at Ure, but didn't recall the womans name, "shield status, weapons status...the lot....report!"
<Ure>
"Larraq, keep us out of weapons range and fire everything we've got at them, rotating frequencies so that hopefully one missile may penetrate their shields! Keep rotating our shield harmonics too...just to be safe. And someone get either captain Brahms or Commander Horn the hell up here!"
She tapped her combadge. "Engineering, prepare to go to warp...we can't take this beating much longer...I don't care how you do it, as long as you do it!"
=^= Intruder alert =^= the computer suddenly blared and Sheena spun in her seat.
"Find them!" she cried, "activate forcefields on decks 11, 12 and 14, sections A, B and F. Send security down to those sections, as well as sickbay, holding cell area and engineering. Seal off the bridge!"
~Engineering~
Having got the Loki in warp, Mel was concentrating on the information Casey had just talked her through on a PADD. Casey had left her to mull it over as she joined a couple of other engineers.
The next thing Mel knew, there was a small scream and several gasps from people. Mel spun round to come face to face with Rahki’s father holding some kind of device to Casey’s neck. She dropped what she was holding in shock. Several officers took a step back as he shoved the terrified second in command of Engineering forward hissing loudly. “We are taking control of this ship. Any resistance will result in death and pain,” he declared loudly. “We have several agents securing the ship at once.”
At that moment the intruder alarms started ringing, the high-pitched noise angering the Cat being. “Turn that off. Or I will kill her.” Luloriau said angrily. He looked to have much more silver in his fur but it was clearly him. Mel felt her pulse starting to race. Locking eyes with him and determined not to freak out from Leiko’s memories as she had earlier, she said immediately “Computer silence intruder alarms.” She needed to keep him happy and talking until security arrived.
The klaxons stopped immediately. Then Mel felt the uncomfortable feeling of being looked up and down. Luloriau focused on her spots for a moment, a look of recognition fell over his face followed by an evil grin she knew she had seen before. Mel shuddered involuntarily.
Despite his earlier words Luloriau then fired at Casey point blank. There were several shrieks in horror as everyone in Engineering watched her body fell to the deck, smoke rising from her clothing. Mel felt sick as he raised the weapon and moved towards her. “So you have Leiko inside you. You are not a pretty as she but you will do. I demand to speak with her now. We have unfinished business ” he growled at Mel starting to move towards her. No fear this time, all Mel could feel was anger burning up inside her.
A very brave ensign chose that moment to attempt a high kick, successfully knocking the weapon out of the alien’s hand sending it flying across the deck. Luloriau growled in both anger and surprise, whirling round claws extended. Mel didn’t need to issue an order as she and about 10 other people launched themselves at the Cat being at once.
“You’re not getting our engines” someone said through clenched teeth. “This is for Casey,” someone else yelled smacking a hard punch on the alien as Quinn Dexter and his security team entered Engineering taking in the chaos.
~Meanwhile in sickbay~
Brahms had been demanding Gallen allow him to his bridge as the Loki returned fire on Rahki’s vessel and went into warp. However the doctor was demanding he lay down so she could administer dressings.
Having just got the Captain on the bio bed again, Brahms quickly jumped back up and stood in front of Janel protectively as too both their utter amazement, one of the cat beings materialised out of thin air and in a very quick move had a nurse in a choke hold. He was pointing a weapon; Brahms had previously been introduced to, at her chest.
“We are taking control of this ship. Any resistance will result in death and pain,”
Brahms was dizzy, disorientated, and felt sick, but there was no way he could not be on the bridge at a time like this .. His conversation with Doctor Galen was bordering on a full-blown argument when all that became moot !
One of the Rakhari had materialized only metres in front of them and had took hold of a nurse by the throat. Brahms, only half on the bio bed, grabbed Galen round the waist and spun her behind him. The alien held a device Brahms knew only too well against the nurses chest and addressed him directly ...
"We are taking control of this ship. Any Resistance will result in pain and death."
Not trusting himself to speak for a few seconds, Brahms was trying to think .. Wondering if he could gain access to the ship's computer to set the Auto-Destruct .. A last resort he knew, but the Loki wasn't going to fall into their hands he decided.
At that precise moment, a blur of silver flashed across the room. Catching the female with a savage blow, both aliens tumbled into a corner of sickbay. The captured nurse fell to her knees, the device on the floor in front of her.
The aliens were screaming and hissing as they fought. The smaller of the two, the male who had saved Brahms,was not going to keep his hold on the female, she was beginning to reassert herself.
"Devicccccce." gasped the male as a claw raked across his forehead drawing blood.
Brahms suddenly understood what the male wanted .. He picked up the device and moved closer to the struggling pair.
"Chesssst."
Brahms waited for an opportune moment and then lunged forward slamming the disc onto the female's chest. she had freed one arm once again and slashed at Marcus, the razor sharp claw missing by a hairs breadth.
She seemed to convulse as the male looked directly into her eyes .. No longer fearful of an attack from her, he rolled to one side as she launched herself toward the ceiling and smashed down on a bio bed groaning ..
"Never again will you dominate !" said the male as he leaned forward and touched the device before moving back to watch the result. ... The scream from the female was horrific, If indeed pain and death had a sound, this would be it ... For almost a full minute she wailed and thrashed before falling still and silent .. No-one needed confirmation that she was dead.
Brahms walked over to the male and gingerly helped him to his feet.
"I am no longer loyal to our Females Captain .. I have nowhere to go .. I will help you all i can in defeating the remaining Rakhari on your ship." he gasped.
"Doctor .. A little help here."
"Let's get him up on a bio bed." she said as she began checking his wounds.
Brahms walked over to the dead female and took the pain device from her body.
"Now .... Let's try to get our ship back ! " ..........
Joint post by Horn and Mel.
Lysoriu had had enough. She could tell the alien was weakening in his attempts to access her mind. With every spec of energy she had she pushed forth managing to weaken what bounded her and push pointy ears off her. The link severed instantly leaving both of them howling in pain.
Peter stumbled backwards and landed on the deck; he lay there sprawled, panting for breath and trying to sort the images he'd received. He cried out in agony when the link was forcefully severed. "What?" he managed between gasps as he tried to get up, but it seemed as some sort of weight was holding him down and he couldn't see what...if any.
Lysoriu growled in delight. Her head was still somewhat fuzzy but it was clear enough to realise that she had the upper hand now. She placed her leg firmly on the aliens chest, breathing hard. Suddenly there was a flash and to her up most horror another of her kind materialised in the room with them.
Peter was dimly aware of the sound of a transporter but he couldn't make out who had beamed in. His vision was edged black and he was close to passing out. With what seemed to be his last reserves, he struggled to sit up, thereby unbalancing Lysoriu but he was knocked back flat when something made hard contact with the side of his face. He blinked in surprise, but still couldn't see what was happening. His mind was still trying to sort the jumble of thoughts.
The second cat alien hissed upon the site of Lysoriu. "So," it rasped, "Rahki was right. Someone did stowaway and try taking the other vessel. She will reward me greatly for capturing you." She looked at Peter, suddenly recognising him. "What luck, I told your captain earlier of my desire to have you as a pet."
"Oh such fun," Peter grimaced as he sat up again and rubbed his temples. It didn't quite penetrate what the female had meant, but he had the feeling it couldn't be good. "This prisoner is not going anywhere, she stays right where she is."
In one swift move she flung forward smashing the weapon in her hand to Lysoriu's chest. Lysoriu screamed in pain falling down unconscious. Then she rounded on Peter, a smirk flowing over her feline features. "Feisty too. I shall so enjoy this." The alien reached down grabbing Peter’s jaw looking him over in interest.
Trying desperately to focus on the being, Peter jerked away. This motion only resulted in the room starting to spin on it's own axis and he reached back down to keep himself from falling flat on his back again. "Enjoy what?" he managed, hoping that his prisoner would be all right. Prisoner or no, she didn't really deserve this treatment and he knew he had been wrong to force the mind meld on it.
However, right now was not the time to worry about any repercussions on the captain's part. He knew he wasn't supposed to engage in unauthorized mind-melds with prisoners and he had disobeyed that order.
Smirking once again but never taking her eyes off of Peter, she touched something on her wrist. "Yuffian here. I have secured my area." There were several voices back reporting the same. Then the Cat being frowned. Two had not reported in. Pulling Peter up and forcing the weapon into his side she moved forward. "Two of my colleagues must be meeting resistance. You will help me put an end to that."
Peter reeled as he was pulled to his feet and sought support by leaning into the feline, something she didn't seem to appreciate. His brain still wasn't fully registering what was going on but he was quite aware of the weapon being jabbed into his side. "Yes I would assume they are," he jibed, "and I will most certainly not."
Laughing as she half heaved half dragged pointy ears past the hollographic guards, Yuffian exited the brig to come face to face with a security team. "Let me pass or I will hurt this one." she screached in annoyance at them all being male.
The security team leveled their phaser rifles at the intruders. "How about you let him go of we hurt you?" one of them shot back.
Why did all federation males have to be so irritating? She thought. Why couldn't they be more like her males and back down. She was not used to this at all. Growling she used the lowest setting making pointy ears grimace in pain and glared back at the others defiantly.
Petty Officer first class Doting squeezed one eye shut as he peered over the barrel of his rifle. "Try that again miss kitty," he dared, "and we'll have kitty soup for dinner tonight." He dared a brief glance at Peter. "Are you all right commander?"
Peter grimaced as pain shot through his body, his muscles protesting against such treatment. "Just shoot them," he breathed, "or shoot me."
Doting frowned, then took careful aim again and fired at one of the felines. "Release him," he demanded once more.
Yuffian considered moving the pain level up. Surely these beings would not sacrifice one of their ranking officers. Doting did not give her the chance. A beam of light shot out faster than she was. It struck at her chest causing her to fall backwards writhing in pain. Peter fell on top of her, rolling away from the weapon in her hand.
Doting moved forward kicking it away, 2 others pointed their rifles right in the aliens face. "Are you ok sir?" Doting asked carefully pulling the FO up to his feet.
Peter shook his head in confusion as he tried to make sense of the situation. He pulled away from the security officer, mistaking him for one of the alien creatures. "Do not touch me," he grunted, "get your female and get off my ship!"
Doting alarmed at the FO's current confused state did the only thing he could think of. Hitting his comm. badge he said, "Transporter room. Beam Commander Horn to sick bay. He has been hurt and is not himself" Bridge, we have secured the bridge and have one more captive," he continued as Horn felt the transporter beams materialise him away.
Mel found herself making a high-pitched noise as she felt a searing pain across her left shoulder. The next second she was thrown back roughly landing in a heap, smashing her head against the deck. She fought to keep conscious, luckily D’BrooNi was on hand to divert the pain briefly and she managed to sit up. A quick look down confirmed the alien had clawed her shoulder in the tussle.
Security had now joined in and was trying to disperse the irate engineers safely so that they could use their weapons. She watched as Dexter charged forward then heard a groan to her right. Charlie was in a bad state groaning. His face and the top of his uniform were covered in blood.
The alien next managed to send Dexter flying, but the asimaar countered the movement by gliding with his wings. Not expecting this action, Luloriau paused for a brief second in confusion that proved his downfall as it allowed Dexter to get a shot in. The alien, hit by Dexter’s phaser howled in pain as he eventually fell down.
The next minute all of Dexter’s team were looking down on Luloriau and once convinced he was of no further threat someone bound his arms. Charlie attempted to get up but Mel placed a hand gently on the elder mans shoulder insisting he stay down. Around them several other engineers looked to have sustained injuries also. A satisfied look at Luloriau proved that at least there resistance had inflicted some damage on the invader also.
=^=D’BrooNi to sickbay. We need a medical team in Engineering=^=
=^=Acknowledged=^=
People started returning to their posts. At least the Loki had suffered no further damage, however all of her staff were very unsettled.
Quinn moved over and pulled Mel up. “We will lock him up with the other captives.”
“Yes get him out of here,” Mel said angrily as she caught site of Casey lying on the floor. She fought to keep tears forming but didn’t win. Quinn touched her arm briefly in an attempt to comfort her as a few sobs escaped her, then unsure how to help further he nodded turning back to his team who had just heaved the now unconscious alien up.
=^=Dexter to Bridge. We have secured Engineering=^= The security team left as Mel forced herself together again. They would mourn Casey later but now there was work to be done. The Wahiri were not getting their ship.
As Brahms moved through the corridores he could hear the messages being passed between departments .. Engineering was now secure, but not without loss .. 'How many more were going to die' he thought furiously.
=^= This is the Captain to all hands .. Set phasers on 'kill' .. repeat .. Set all phasers on 'kill' =^=
It was more than obvious that the Rakhari were not trying to take prisoners .. They were killing the crew at will !
Brahms was heading to the bridge, but as he rounded a corner he was confronted with two of the alien race .. They bounded toward him and Marcus lifted his weapon, shooting the leading Rakhari full in the face. It's fate caused the second to alter it's line of attack. It leapt against the wall in order to jump Brahms from the side.
It was faster than he could react. But not faster that the Security Officer behind him. She shot the alien mid leap, causing it to disintegrate before reaching her Captain.
"You Ok Sir ?"
"Yes ..... Yes thankyou Ensign." Brahms said, grateful for her presence.
Suddenly, the two were thrown against the bulkhead as the Loki lurched violently, her inertial dampers not coping with the onslaught. The unmistakable sound of tearing metal was prominent .. The Loki was hurt !
=^= Bridge to Captain =^=
=^= Go ahead Bridge =^=
=^= Sir ... We have lost shields .. Torpedo's exhausted .. Phaser power is down to seventy eight percent .. =^=
=^= See if you can divert power from main engines or even life support for the phaser banks .. What about warp drive ? =^=
=^= Stable at the moment Sir but the warp field has been fluctuating .. We could loose it at any moment =^=
=^= Contact Commander D'BrooNi .. Appraise her of the situation and get more power to those phasers .. I'm on my way to the bridge now =^=
The Loki rocked yet again .. More violently this time .. Brahms and the Security Officer tried to keep moving towards the Jeffery's tubes leading up to the bridge ...
=^= Sir .. Two more Rakhari vessels have caught up with us .. They are opening fire ! =^=
=^= Hell !!! ... Any contact with Unification yet ? =^=
=^= No sir, nothing, but they MUST know we are coming .. If there are any ship's there, Unification should get them to us within fifteen minutes .. If not then let's hope her defenses are a match for the Rakhari =^= Ure finished, An almost terrified taint to her voice.
Marcus knew full well that no Federation ship's were currently at Unification .. Only trade vessels and supply ship's were there at the moment .. The Loki, and Unification were going to have to fight alone.
The ship shook yet again .. Emergency force-fields sprang into place ahead of Brahms .. There was a massive hull breach in progress.
He wasn't getting to the bridge that way !!! ..........
