Naois, however, didn't seem to hear her. His gaze was fixed on the ceiling as if he was determined not to look at her and to upset her again. It hurt him, that he had upset her, and it hurt him even more that at some point he had relished in seeing her upset.
*what is wrong with me?* he pondered, as he lay perfectly still on the biobed, unaware of what test Roquel might be running now.
Slowly, his eyes closed and he drifted off in a much needed, but uneasy sleep. He would start awake occasionally, but just as easily slip off into sleep again. "Valeia," he whispered in his sleep, unaware that the doctor had left to go talk to the nurse.
~
Nurse Bette Sherlock screamed at the guard, demanding to be let go. Her mate needed her, or he would die. She glowered at Roquel as the young doctor entered the brig. "You!" she screeched, pointing a single finger at her, "you, you HAG! Stay away from him you hear!? You're killing him, tearing him apart. Can't you see what you're doing?"

First, Valeia stopped by Lieutenant Commander Howard’s office. He had been put in charge of the investigation. Valeia had already talked to him several times, but she wanted to make sure he hadn’t found anything that might help her determine if that nurse did something to Naois. And if she did…
“Ah, Ensign Roquel. Do come in. I’m pleased to hear you were promoted. Congratulations.” he said, genuinely smiling.
Valeia smiled back. “Thank you, Sir.”
“Well then, how can I help you?” he asked warmly.
Valeia sighed. This would be difficult to explain without embarrassing Naois. “Well, as you know I’ve been treating Captain Mercy, and we’ve come to a bit of a standstill. I’m beginning to believe that whatever Nurse Sherlock gave to me to give him is still having an effect on him. I was wondering if you’d come across anything in your investigation that could potentially help me treat him.”
His smile faded as she spoke. “I’m sorry to hear that.” he replied. “But actually, we did find something that might help you in her quarters.” As she spoke, he stood and crossed to some sort of storage locker, which he opened, retrieving a bag and handing it to her. “See if you can figure out what all this is.”
Opening the bag, Valeia was surprised to find a collection of brightly colored vials. They had no labels on them, but appeared to be dyed to distinguish them from each other. There were four different colors; pink, red, blue, and green; represented. This would most likely shed some light on what was going on.
Thanking the Commander, Valeia left. She could either go to sickbay and try and figure out what these were herself or she could try to talk to Nurse Sherlock and hope she would feel like talking. She wanted desperately to confront the woman who had cause so much trouble, so she decided to go there first.
With the bag in her hand, Valeia made her way to the brig to talk to Nurse Sherlock. She was probably the only person that could tell her what each of these was and what they did. Valeia had no idea how many of these she had given to Naois, but she was determined to find out. As she entered, she immediately located the nurse, who after seeing her, glared at her.
"You! You, you HAG! Stay away from him you hear!? You're killing him, tearing him apart. Can't you see what you're doing?" Sherlock screamed at her. Valeia was startled, not only by the words, but by the extreme emotions that were coming from her like daggers looking for their targets. And right now, that target was most certainly Valeia.
Anger, a mostly unfamiliar emotion, began to boil up inside of her. How dare she use Naois to get what she wanted; how dare she be so mean and selfish. She was obviously crazy.
Glaring at the nurse, Valeia replied, “I’M killing him? I’M tearing him apart? No, you did that all on your own. I don’t know what you did or were trying to do, but it backfired, big time, and unless you tell me what you did and how to fix it, he’s going to end up, dead or alive, in love with me, and not you. What bothers you more; him being with me, or you appearing innocent? I suggest you think about that.”
Valeia was fuming by the end of this and turned to leave. She was so angry, she couldn’t sense whether the woman’s resolve was crumbling or intensifying.

"You'll be the death of him," Sherlock insisted, fuming herself. She wanted him, he was hers forever, she would see to that. She sat, arms crossed, on the bench in her cell, pursing her lips as she watched the doctor leave. "Hag!" she then cried after the retreating woman, "witch!"
~
Antoine Donolly carefully ran his scanner over the sleeping counselor, frowning as he peered at the monitor that showed the Vulcanoid's continuous readings. Heart rate was up, insofar measurable, same as blood pressure. Adrenalin and endorphin levels were also elevated. Donolly didn't understand what was going on with his friend, but he was sure to find out.
Carefully, he shook the younger officer. "Naois wake up, I think we need to talk." When the captain made no response, Donolly shook him a little harder. "Naois Mercy, you had better wake up or so help me whatever deity to fancy, I'll kick you out of that bed."
Naois opened his eyes and glared balefully at his older friend. "I need to rest," he argued, "doctor's orders."
"And since when are you one to follow a doctor's orders to the letter? You never obeyed your doctor parents whenever you were injured during one of your adventures. You never obeyed me either, come to think of it."
A smile played around Naois' lips as he sighed. "Ah, but she is beautiful," he murmured, "and she has this air around her, making you obey her just to please her. Antoine, I think I am in love."
"Are you certain?" Antoine Donolly passed his scanner over the Vulcanoid's head again. "My scans tell me otherwise mate, you were poisoned earlier, though you've been acting out of whack way before then. No mate, this started when you woke up here in the ICU. Before that goreous young woman arrived. And I'll tell you this, she's intent to find out."
"Good," Naois suddenly snapped, "then perhaps you will let the issue rest. Go bother my parents Antoine, I am certain they are waiting for news on my recovery. Let me deal with the doctor, it is my issue to solve, not yours." His expression brightened as the doctor in question walked in, her expression grave. "Ah, my dear doctor..." He fell silent, not sure how to continue. "Do sit down love, you look like you could use a drink."
"I'll get it," Antoine sighed, casting Roquel a questioning look while he rolled his eyes at her. "Something's wrong," he mouthed at her as he walked past. "He thinks he's in love with you."

The woman would not budge it seemed. She would sit in that cell cursing Valeia and declaring her ownership of Naois even if it killed him apparently. The thought of Naois dying caused Valeia’s fury to rise even higher. She wanted nothing more than to deactivate the forcefield and strangle her. However, she resisted, turned on her heel, and left. If she wouldn’t talk, there was nothing to stay for.
Once she returned to sickbay, she found Naois exactly where she had left him, except he was talking to another doctor. When he saw her, his face lit up, and although under other circumstances the sight may have caused her to smile as well, she was too upset and disappointed in herself to smile back.
"Ah, my dear doctor...Do sit down love, you look like you could use a drink." Naois commented, smiling at her.
The other doctor, said “I’ll get it,” but as he turned to do so and passed her, he half whispered, “"Something's wrong; he thinks he's in love with you."
Valeia sighed. “Thanks for the update…” she thought sarcastically. It figured that someone being in love with her would be a problem. Resignedly, she placed her bag on the floor and sat in the chair next to the bed. She still had trouble looking at him, half out of sorrow for failing to find out what was wrong with him and half because every time she did look at him the wave of emotions distracted her entirely.
Finally deciding to say something, Valeia sighed. “I didn’t find out anything. She wouldn’t talk. She is crazy, and she doesn’t care if she kills you.” She was drained, emotionally and physically exhausted. That was how she explained the slight crack in her voice when she said ‘kills you.’
“I did manage to get a few vials of drugs she had in her room, but since I had the vial that you were injected with and wasn’t able to find anything, I can’t imagine how that would help. I’m sorry…” she trailed off feeling dejected.
Her eyes fell upon the display then. His readings were continuing to head upwards, which would seem to indicate pon farr. With all the thoughts of what that woman had given him running through her mind, she hadn’t recently considered what it would mean if he was going through pon farr. It’d be just as bad for her really, a physical reaction, not real feelings for her.
Sighing again, she decided to go back to her job to distract herself. “How are you feeling?”

Naois reached for her, momentarily ignoring her question. "Do not feel bad," he told her, "I know you are doing everything you can to find out what she had you inject me with. Your telepathic abilities are not what they should be, you cannot blame yourself for this. Perhaps, if I had told you about her sooner, this may not have happened, so if anyone is to blame, it will be me."
Behind Roquel, Donolly rolled his eyes at him and snorted. "Just tell the girl, you pointy eared git. Or I'll tell her!"
Naois ignored his old friend, keeping his eyes on the young doctor. "I do not believe that I am in the early stages of pon farr," he told her earnestly, while still holding her hands, "nor do I believe any medications are affecting me." He smiled up at her. "And to answer your question, now that you are here I feel better. I am, however, sorry to see a good doctor as yourself leave. Will you promise to come back and visit when your ship docks here? Resurrection is the home port of the Phoenix, and I am permanently assigned here."

Apparently her mood was blatantly obvious, as Naois tried to comfort her. "Do not feel bad. I know you are doing everything you can to find out what she had you inject me with. Your telepathic abilities are not what they should be; you cannot blame yourself for this. Perhaps, if I had told you about her sooner, this may not have happened, so if anyone is to blame, it will be me."
Her head snapped up at that, and she was about to tell him this was not his fault, when the other doctor spoke from behind them. "Just tell the girl, you pointy eared git. Or I'll tell her!"
This got her attention, as she looked at the doctor before whirling back around to face Naois. “What, what is it? Are you alright? Is something wrong?”
Naois ignored both the other doctor and Valeia, as he continued. "I do not believe that I am in the early stages of pon farr, nor do I believe any medications are affecting me.” Valeia stared at him unblinkingly, not quite comprehending what he was saying.
"And to answer your question,” he continued, “now that you are here I feel better. I am, however, sorry to see a good doctor as yourself leave. Will you promise to come back and visit when your ship docks here? Resurrection is the home port of the Phoenix, and I am permanently assigned here."
She was still trying to understand what he was trying to tell her, and her mind was still in doctor mode, so she missed the obvious... “So you’re certain it’s not pon farr?” He nodded. “And you don’t think any medications are affecting you?” He nodded again “And you’re sure it’s not post traumatic stress?” He nodded again, apparently patient enough to allow her to try and figure out what he was saying.
“So you’re alright? There’s nothing wrong with you?” He nodded again, his smile growing wider with each question. While she was glad he was feeling good, she had the distinct feeling he was amused at her, and she didn’t find this guessing game remotely funny.
“Well I don’t understand then. Then why are you experiencing such a drastic change in your personality? What else could cause that? If you found something out, just tell me!” she demanded, getting frustrated at Naois’ calm smile, and the other doctor’s obvious amusement at her expense. “Well one of you’d better tell me…or are you just going to keep my in the dark?”

Donolly cast their patient a bemused smile. "Feisty one isn't she? And so close to the truth too. You're being mean to her you know." He knew it would tick her off, talking about her as if she weren't there.
Eyes still on Valeia, Naois nodded. "Feisty indeed, and beautiful too." Then he shook his head at the younger doctor. "I do not know why I suffer this change of personality. It could be anything and I shall be talking to a counselor to find out too, at your own orders. What I do know, is that my feelings for you are true, even if you believe they are not. When I touched you earlier, what did you feel? I am quite certain you were in my mind. Would you be willing to repeat that, by way of experiment? I am sensing confusion from you, and it may help you think clearly, or more clearly again."
Donolly's eyes widened; Naois was usually very reserved when it came to allowing people into his mind. Antoine himself had only once experienced a mind meld with his friend, and that had been when Naois had still been a cadet in the academy. "That's a rare offer my dear," he told Valeia, "he doesn't offer that lightly."

"Feisty one isn't she? And so close to the truth too. You're being mean to her you know." the other doctor teased, obviously enjoying this, and Valeia sent him a glare.
"Feisty indeed, and beautiful too." Naois' voice brought her focus back on Naois, who although he appeared slightly amused was also still very serious, which made her nervous. "I do not know why I suffer this change of personality. It could be anything and I shall be talking to a counselor to find out too, at your own orders.” he replied. At this she relaxed almost completely, but he continued.
“What I do know, is that my feelings for you are true, even if you believe they are not. When I touched you earlier, what did you feel? I am quite certain you were in my mind. Would you be willing to repeat that, by way of experiment? I am sensing confusion from you, and it may help you think clearly, or more clearly again."
As his words began to sink in, Valeia forgot to breathe for a moment before finding herself out of breath and forcing air back into her lungs. She faintly thought she probably looked like a ghost.
"That's a rare offer my dear. He doesn't offer that lightly." the doctor offered, his words tearing Valeia’s gaze away from Naois and back to him. Gone was the teasing and amusement. In its place was something that vaguely represented surprise, but she wasn’t sure. She was sure of something though.
“Uh Doctor….” she started before giving up on the name. “Would you excuse us? Please?” she requested. It was hard enough to process all of this, let alone with someone else she didn’t know in the room.
As he left, she looked down at their hands, trying to gather her thoughts before finally starting to talk. “I felt…I don’t know what I felt. I felt something, but I’m not sure if I could define it. I…I am definitely confused, and if you think…that would help…” She trailed off uncertainly. She had to agree with him there. She was certainly confused. She just didn’t understand exactly what he was proposing.
“I don’t know exactly how this works, or what I’m supposed to do.”

'Come sit here, across of me," Naois instructed as he patted a spot on the bed that was close to him. "I do need you to be relaxed and comfortable with this." He gazed at her in earnest and waited until she sat comfortably across of him.
"Give me your hand," he continued, and held it loosely as she offered it, "I want you to squeeze it the minute you feel uncomfortable. I am going to invite you into my mind, to see for yourself that my feelings are genuine and not the produce of an innate biological cycle that I, as I am half Human, may not even experience. I do not know for certain."
Slowly, he raised her other hand to his face and placed her fingers on the katrapoints, covering her hand with his. "Your mind to my mind..." he intoned, closing his eyes. He had to concentrate to keep his mental barriers down and let her in and showed her.

As he motioned for her to sit and told her she needed to be relaxed, she sat across from him but was anything but relaxed. Still, she had to try and calm her nerves somehow, so she forced her muscles to relax and tried to take slow, deep breaths to calm down.
"Give me your hand," he continued. She hesitantly held out her hand, which he gently took in his. "I want you to squeeze it the minute you feel uncomfortable”
She nodded, growing nervous again. She wanted to squeeze his hand now just for comfort but didn’t. “I am going to invite you into my mind, to see for yourself that my feelings are genuine and not the produce of an innate biological cycle that I, as I am half Human, may not even experience. I do not know for certain."
“Ok,” she replied, putting a calm into her voice that she certainly wasn’t feeling. As he gently guided her fingers to the right places on his face, she had to work very hard to keep her hands from shaking, but managed somehow. He had to know how nervous she was, and she was surprised he trusted her in spite of her fears.
"Your mind to my mind..." he intoned, closing his eyes. She followed his lead and closed her eyes too. She had a hard time understanding the process of what was happening. It was like he was taking her hand and leading her somewhere but without tactile feeling, and she wasn’t in sickbay anymore.
So many images bombarded her sight flashing rapidly past from one to the next. Each carried with it a flood of different emotions that tinged each picture in different colors and light, but they were moving too fast for her to process.
Finally, the images slowed and settled on one: her. It was disconcerting watching herself, but as the image became more solid, she began to notice that somehow this picture was different from the others. The light around it was brighter and the colors more vibrant.
The flood of emotions began to overwhelm her as the image itself faded and was replaced entirely by colors and light that surrounded her and filled her with a very powerful emotion. The swirl of light and color became more tangible wrapping her up in it like a warm blanket, seeping in through her skin and becoming a part of her. She felt safe, comfortable, wonderful, and…
That’s when it hit her, and she finally understood. A smile began to form and unbidden tears of joy began to flow down her face. She wanted to share herself with him as he had done for her, and somehow that desire was communicated to him, as she felt the faint brush of his fingertips on her face.
Almost instantly, she could feel him with her in her mind, and he seemed to know exactly where to go, for a moment later the colors seemed to double in intensity and churned faster around her. And then, she wasn’t alone in the ocean of colors and light. He was there with her, a part of her and a part of the sea.

Naois knew he needed to tread carefully now, he couldn't go too deep into her memories or it'd create a lasting connection, more commonly known as a bond. He wasn't quite yet ready to do that, and certainly not without her knowledge or permission.
Gently, he withdrew his mind from hers and opened his eyes, taking a few deep breaths and sitting perfectly still to gain his bearings. He moved his hands to her arms to steady her, should that be necessary, but he didn't quite touch her. "I see that you understand now," he spoke softly, "now as a medical doctor, what is your conclusion? Am I out of my mind? Suffering from a recurring Vulcan condition? Trauma perhaps?"
Eyes twinkling in bemusement, but his expression otherwise blank, he gazed at her, awaiting her response.

Like grasping at the edge of a blanket and having it torn away, the connection broke, leaving Valeia reeling in its wake. Trying to catch her breath and refocus her vision, the doctor gripped the edge of the bed to steady herself. Naois was there, making sure she was alright, but Valeia wasn’t getting the same flood of emotions as before, like the fire had been turned down from an all consuming roar to smoldering. “Great, he can control it now…” she thought glumly.
"I see that you understand now," he said softly. Valeia could only nod. "Now as a medical doctor, what is your conclusion? Am I out of my mind?” She shook her head. “Suffering from a recurring Vulcan condition?” The doctor shook her head again, a smile forming on her lips thinking it was cute that he didn’t want to say its title. “Trauma perhaps?" The smile grew as she shook her head again.
Naois’ expression was…well Vulcan, but his eyes betrayed his amusement. It was curious that the Vulcan’s control appeared to have returned after sharing his feelings. Valeia did indeed know how he felt now, but it would be difficult to not see it in her….well…..in Naois’ expression or feel it quite so strongly in his emotions. Between his control and her shyness, this wasn’t going to be easy.
Self-consciously, the Betazoid began to play with her hair, something she only did when nervous. “So…umm…you seem to be back to your normal self now…”
Valeia trailed off, not sure what else to say. What could she say to him after experiencing something that words couldn’t describe? They had shared so much… “What do we do now?” she finally asked.

"Seems so," Naois agreed, "even though I do not understand how. Perhaps this is something the Humans would call pouring your heart out, but then through a different means? You must admit, telepathic communication is less restraining than verbal communication." He fell silent, seeing that the doctor wasn't at all comfortable and noticed that she was toying with her hair.
He reached out and brushed it aside when she asked what would happen now. Putting his fingers under his chin, he gently forced her to look up at him. "However you like," he answered softly, "you are in no way committed to me. I did not pursue the mind meld out of fear it would commit you to me, bind you in ways you could not believe possible."
Quietly he explained how the Vulcan bonding worked, and how his parents had developed an emotional bond months before they got married. "I did not wish to create such a bond, not without your knowledge or your permission. Not even if I had truly believed to be going through pon farr, though I know that time would be nearer than I would desire."
He lay back on the bed when he saw the room starting to spin before his eyes. "At any rate, if you would like to pursue a relationship I will settle for the pace you set as obviously you are uncomfortable to the very idea. I will not push you unless you wish to be pushed. I would not wish to push you away as I desire your friendship. Love at first sight is a Human emotion, one that I have come to understand and believe in. I do love you Valeia."

A gentle smile spread across her face as she sat down in the chair next to the biobed. “I love you too, Naois. I want you to know though; it’s not that I’m uncomfortable with the idea of being with you by any means. I don’t want you to think that. I’m just not used to sharing how I feel, with anyone. Putting feelings into words and actions is very difficult for me to do, scary even. I don’t want to say or do anything stupid or undesired…” Valeia trailed off fearing she was beginning to sound difficult.
“My uncertainty is not how I feel. I know how I feel. I love you and want to be with you and…” she trailed off again, her face growing slightly pink, as she pushed her hair back. “My uncertainty is with what to say and what to do. I don’t know how well you can read my emotions or if you can read my thoughts at all, but I can imagine my emotions would be confusing without the thoughts behind them.”
Valeia sighed and continued to play with her hair, frustrated with herself that she’d rambled on like that, probably unnecessarily. “Just get to the point!” the Betazoid’s mind scolded.
“You said you didn’t want to push unless I wanted to be pushed. Well I do want to be pushed. No, I need to be pushed. If this is to go anywhere, and I do want it to go somewhere, I’m going to need help because I don’t know how to get it there. I don’t even know where to start.”
“I just worry that it would be even harder for you to let go of your Vulcan control and… I don’t want you to change who you are just to…” Even more frustrated with herself, Valeia finally just flipped her hair behind her and leaned forward to look at him. “I don’t want this to end just because I’m too scared to make it work.”

Slowly, Naois slipped off the bed and got to his feet, reaching to pull Valeia to her feet as well. "Starting a relationship is easy, maintaining it is always hard work. Especially since you will be assigned to a starship." He circled one arm around her waist and pulled her closer, while his other hand balanced her behind her neck. Leaning in slightly, he kissed her again.
"We will take it at a slow pace," he offered, "and I will help you overcome this shyness. You are a good doctor, you will be a good lover also." He smiled at her, then pulled her head against his chest, making her lean against him. Gently, he stroked her hair as they stood. "But you must not linger now, you must try to get to the Phoenix. I am well enough now to be entrusted into Donolly's care, and I will make a full recovery. I promise."

Valeia smiled up at him following the quick kiss. He somehow seemed to know exactly what she wanted and needed him to do and say, which was a good sign.
"We will take it at a slow pace, and I will help you overcome this shyness. You are a good doctor; you will be a good lover also." Naois promised, causing the Betazoid’s face to flush. He smiled at her and pulled her close. Valeia leaned against him, her head finding his shoulder and her arms wrapping around him. She relaxed completely against him, feeling safe.
The Captain’s fingers gently ran through her hair "But you must not linger now; you must try to get to the Phoenix.” he reminded her gently. “I am well enough now to be entrusted into Donolly's care, and I will make a full recovery. I promise."
Tears sprang into her eyes and her fingers tangled themselves in the back of his uniform not wanting to let go, but she forced herself to blink the tears back. He was right after all. “I know. I just don’t want to go.”
Valeia briefly considered telling him of her fear of being on a starship and her hesitancy in accepting this assignment, but she didn’t want to detract from the fact that she didn’t want to leave him or cause him to worry.
Neither spoke nor wanted to let go it seemed, but finally the doctor sighed and said, “I should probably go and find out where the ship is and when it would be best for me to make my way there.”
She pulled back just enough so she could see his face. “You stay here and get some rest. I’ll go and find out and return to…” Valeia paused not wanting to say the word ‘goodbye,’ before adding, “…to check on you.”
She shyly brushed a quick kiss on his cheek, though she wanted to really kiss him but was too shy, before untangling her fingers from his uniform, pulling back and helping him get settled back on the biobed. “I’ll be back soon.” she promised, once again fighting with the desire to kiss him and her shyness. Shyness won again, as Valeia smiled at him and squeezed his hand before turning and walking out of sickbay.
Sighing sadly, Valeia reluctantly headed towards Ops to learn the location of the Dark Phoenix and determine when she would need to leave. She secretly wished she could stay for awhile longer but knew that decision would need to be based solely on the position of the Phoenix and the remaining duration of their current mission. Still, she could hope…

"That's a start my dear boy," old Donolly smiled as he re-entered the ward."
Naois gazed up at his friend, his expression a mix between confusion and amused. "I do not know what you are talking about," he answered innocently.
"You got the girl to respond to you, wasn't that what this act of yours was all about?" Antoine Donolly sat down on the edge of the bed and patted the Vulcanoid on his leg. "Smart move my boy, very smart indeed."
"What act?" Naois queried, frowning as he stopped Donolly and brushed his hand aside in annoyance. "This was not an act. I mindmelded with her and have shown her my true feelings for her."
This time, Donolly frowned. "You mean to say you're serious? The girl is awfully shy, are you certain this will work out?"
Naois nodded. "I have every confidence it will. And now I wish for you to leave, you have annoyed and insulted me just now. That and I promised her I would rest." He stiffled a yawn. "I find myself weary all of a sudden, please leave."
Donolly made a scoffing sound and left. "You're making this difficult on yourself boy," he retorted, "she'll break your heart."
"Stop calling me boy," Naois shot back, "I am thirty five standard years old, hardly a boy. That you are seventy years old does not give you the right to belittle me. Now leave, I need to rest." He glared at his old friend, who left in a sudden hurry, then settled back on the bed and tried to relax.
A smile played around his lips as he slowly drifted into a pleasant dream. He didn't wake when Valeia returned to check upon him.

Valeia sighed as she left the station commander’s office. The Dark Phoenix had not been heard from since they entered the Ink Patch, which had been somewhat expected, but Starfleet was beginning to become concerned. No matter what was going on, the ship needed a CMO, and perhaps assistance, so they were sending the Norway class medical ship, the U.S.S. Osler, which was scheduled to depart in several hours. That left Valeia with very little time.
Fortunately, her bags remained packed for the most part, but it was saying goodbye she was dreading most. After returning to quarters to completely pack and then have her bags transported aboard the Osler, the time had come to return to sickbay. Upon entering, Valeia found Naois sleeping soundly.
Smiling at him, she crossed to where he was sleeping. He looked so peaceful when he was asleep, and Valeia had to stop herself from brushing his hair from his forehead or leaning over to give him a kiss. He needed his sleep, so the doctor decided to wait and not wake him unless it became necessary.
As she turned to bring the chair back over, she found the other doctor from before watching her from the doorway. Valeia flushed slightly at being caught as the doctor approached her. “You’re back awfully soon.” he commented.
Valeia was slightly taken aback. His tone and his emotions indicated suspicion, and she wasn’t sure what exactly she’d done to warrant his contempt. Crossing the room to meet him halfway, she extended her hand. “I don’t believe we’ve been properly introduced. Doctor Valeia Roquel. And you are?” she asked as politely as she could manage and quietly so as not to wake Naois.
The older man hesitated, sizing her up a bit, before he shook her offered hand. ”Doctor Antoine Donolly,” he answered, still looking her over.
“It appears I’m going to be leaving for my new assignment in a few hours. I wanted to come back and…check on him.” Valeia replied quietly, indicating Naois in answer to his earlier comment on her quick return to sickbay.
Donolly’s eyes narrowed at that response. “I see.” he responded a bit coldly.
Trying to ignore his coldness, the Betazoid asked, “How is he doing?”
“As well as can be expected.” Antoine replied just as cold as before.
She was unable to ignore his attitude towards her anymore. “I’m sorry, maybe I’m missing something here, but have I done something to offend you? Valeia asked a bit irritated. She could think of nothing she had done to deserve the feelings of dislike and distrust he was sending her way.

Donolly narrowed his eyes as he gazed at the young woman, calculating his next response carefully. "Offend me? No, you did no such thing. However if you break that boy's heart, I'll never forgive you. He's like a son to me, I have known him since he was a wee child." He nearly spilled out that Naois was in fact his godson, but he wasn't going to tell her that. "Don't you dare hurt him, girl. Now go see to him, he'll want to know you're about to leave him."
Antoine Donolly turned his back on her, a slight smile playing around his lips. A smile she would never see him display before her; he actually did like the girl, but he wanted to be sure she knew what she was getting into. He knew Naois was very much aware of what he was doing, even though he couldn't approve of his methods.
As it happened, Naois woke up the moment Valeia entered the room. Smiling, he reached for her and pulled her close. "You are leaving me, are you not?" he whispered, a look of sadness briefly crossing his features. "No, do not apologise. You will be here with me every time the Phoenix comes home. We will have shoreleaves, I promise."
Naois watched Donolly walk away from them, closing the curtains as he left. Then Naois moved on to remove his tunic and shirt before her. "A final check up," he suggested mildly, "before your ship leaves. Donolly will want a full report if he is to know how to continue. Consider this your parting test, even though you already graduated. I am, after all, officially your patient until I am released." Carefully, he pulled her to him, his bare skin warm against her touch and kissed her with a passion he had not shown her yet. "Be safe love," he whispered, "and come back to me."

"Offend me? No, you did no such thing. However, if you break that boy's heart, I'll never forgive you. He's like a son to me. I have known him since he was a wee child. Don't you dare hurt him, girl.” Donolly replied, his tone deadly serious.
Part of her was angry at his assumption that she was going to or planning to break Naois’ heart and the other part of her took his warning seriously. Valeia had no intention of breaking his heart and was in fact hoping her heart wouldn’t get broken either.
“Now go see to him, he'll want to know you're about to leave him." Donolly said before turning his back on her. She turned around to find Naois awake and smiling at her. With a smile of her own, she moved toward him as he pulled her into his arms.
"You are leaving me, are you not?" he whispered sadly, somehow knowing she had to go. Valeia started to speak, but he stopped her. "No, do not apologize. You will be here with me every time the Phoenix comes home. We will have shoreleaves, I promise."
Sighing sadly, Valeia held onto him tighter and heard the curtain being pulled behind them. “Probably Donolly,” she thought. “At least I don’t have to ask for privacy this time; not that he’s actually gone either.”
Naois, however, seemed to feel Donolly was gone, as he removed his shirt and gave her a far too innocent look. "A final check up before your ship leaves. Donolly will want a full report if he is to know how to continue. Consider this your parting test, even though you already graduated. I am, after all, officially your patient until I am released."
Valeia smiled shyly and felt her face flush, cursing her nervousness as she unconsciously began to play with her hair again. If she was to think medically, his injuries were healing nicely, but she was having a very hard time thinking medically as she reached out to gently trace a fading scar with her fingertip.
That seemed to get a response as Naois pulled her against him and kissed her intensely. The room once again transformed into colors as Valeia wrapped her arms around his neck having to stand nearly on tip toes to do so. One hand tangled itself in his hair pulling him closer while the other traced the muscles in his shoulders and back.
The kiss broke, but Naois continued to hold her close. "Be safe love, and come back to me." he whispered, causing a few tears to spring to her eyes as she continued to cling to him.
“I will,” she whispered back before, all shyness forgotten, pulling him back into another kiss. Valeia pulled back reluctantly, knowing she had to leave. A tear managed to escape and ran down her cheek, but Naois brushed it away gently.
“The mission has already started, so maybe it won’t be too long before I’m back,” Valeia hoped aloud, as she swallowed back her tears and traced his face with her hand. “I love you.” she murmured and kissed him once more before forcing herself to pull away and backing towards the door. At the door, she blinked back tears and forced a sad smile as she waved to him before walking out of sickbay.
