Jane awoke on the morning of her training mission feeling excited and nervous; Jane got out of bed and moved to the bathroom where she looked in the mirror rubbing her eyes she couldn’t stop smiling.
After her shower she quickly got dressed and ate her breakfast, she checked the time on the closest computer panel and saw she still had about forty minutes before her training was set to begin. Jane moved to her coffee table where she picked up a PADD containing a letter she had received from her father she began to read. After finishing the letter janes eyes were filled with tears her father was a retired Marine and he was extremely proud that his only child decided to follow his footsteps. It had been a hard choice between Marine training and Tactical but the deciding factor was definitely the fun her father described to her about his old Marine days.
Jane left her quarters and made her way to the holodeck where her training was scheduled to begin. She arrived and the holodeck was empty she decided to enter and meditate in order to calm herself before the Academy commandant arrived.
Sitting in the middle of the empty holodeck Jane closed her eyes and began to breath deeply. She had no idea how quickly the time had passed and was a little surprised to hear the doors open behind her, she jumped up and looked towards the person who had just entered noticing it was a Captain she stood at attention and said.
“Cadet Jane Davison sir.”

"Computer, activate program Mercy alpha one," Naois called, as he came to a halt before the holodeck doors.
*Unable to comply, holodeck is occupied.* the computer replied.
Frowning, Naois ordered the doors open and stepped in, surprised to find a woman clad in marine green sitting smack middle of the room. When she spotted him she jumped to her feet and stood at rigid attention, introducing herself.
"At ease," he ordered, walking up to her. "Are you my new trainee?" he asked softly, as he studied her. She seemed young to be a marine, but he'd seen cadets that were younger. "I am Captain Naois Mercy, Academy Commandant. Come with me."
He preceded the cadet out of the holodeck. "Why did you choose the corps?" he asked, "and why here?" This time he was wondering aloud. "I am hardly a marine. How would a counselor train a marine?"

“I decided to join the Marines to follow in my father’s footsteps.”
Jane didn’t know what more she could say, she had always wanted to join the marines even before she was old enough to join school. Jane was still extremely nervous about beginning her training and her fears were not helped any by the captains remark.
"I am hardly a marine. How would a counselor train a marine?"
Jane was confused for a second she wasn’t sure if he was asking her, if he was just talking to himself something Jane herself was guilty of.
“Sorry sir, are you asking me my opinion.”

At that moment in time Jane Davison could not be more filled with nerves now she had no idea what her training would involve, especially now after the captains comment about he himself not knowing what he could do. Jane tried to hid the fact that she was completely scared, her palms were getting sweaty but she put them behind her back to hide the fact that she was beginning to shake.

"Not quite," Naois answered gently, picking up on her fear. "There was a program I ran with a previous security cadet, it could be useful. Technically, a marine's main job is to keep his or her captain safe. Aside from that, his or her squadron is mainly used for reconnaissance or scouting."
He activated the holodeck program he'd used to train Mitchell, then thrust a rifle in her hand. "Paintball, but not quite," he explained. "You wait one minute for me to take up refuge somewhere, and then you and your holographic squadron will set out to find me. Your rifle will generate ten-second stun-cycles, however, mine will generate the same. Settings cannot be changed."
Quickly, he explained the scoring rules to her. "You have fired a phaser rifle before, have you not?" he queried, raising an eyebrow at the young woman before him.
He picked up his own rifle, saluted to her and walked off. "Computer, darken room and dim lights for exactly one minute. Begin count-down."
One minute later, Naois was gone from view, safely hidden away, though such that he could keep an eye on her progress. He was curious to see what she would come up with; the previous result had been unexpected. Women, however tended to come up with different solutions than the male recruits generally did.

Captain Mercy handed Jane a phaser rifle as he asked if she had ever fired one before, Jane suppressed a laugh of course she had her father was a marine she had fired a phaser before her tenth birthday.
Captain Mercy entered the holodeck and Jane was left to wait for sixty seconds. She stopped herself trying to come up with a strategy now as she had no idea what the holographic environment would be. Sixty seconds ended and Jane entered the holodeck and looked around with a smile, she saw a forest filled with trees and bushes. Jane knew captain mercy could be hiding anywhere ready to strike. Jane took a step forward into the holodeck and the door behind her closed; three holographic marines appeared behind her. Turning to look at them she began to formulate a plan in her mind.
“Okay Marines we have a target hiding somewhere in the foliage, I want a strictly stealth and tag, no noise, keep your voices low and follow my lead.”
The Marines nodded at her and at that moment Jane’s nerves disappeared to be taken over by the sense of the hunt. Jane moved in between trees and pointed for her men to check bushes that seemed to move without any logical reason. Jane and her men had been searching for about ten minutes before she came across a clearing. She held her hand up signalling her men to stop before they continued into the clearing. She had the feeling it may be a trap if she walked in there she would have nowhere to hide before getting hit with a stun affect. Pointing to two of the marines she said.
“You two I want a perimeter check of this clearing you two go left, we will meet up halfway if you see the target stay still, do not engage.”
Jane watched as the two marines moved off, she and the remaining marine moved right around the edge of the clearing hidden from view by trees and shrubs. She had made it a quarter of the way when she saw a lone body crouched behind a shrub. Jane dropped to her knees and took aim and fired. Jane couldn’t tell if she had hit the target but she wasn’t going to expose herself by rushing over there to check. She slowly moved around towards the bush where she saw the target but when she arrived the target was gone...

The shot went barely over his head and Naois let himself fall into the underbush, rolling away as quickly as possible. She was quick, he had to give her that, and he had to take better care on how he was hiding. It wasn't that his grey uniform stood out against the foliage, in fact between the trees it worked out just fine as camouflage.
The Vulcan quickly moved position before the girl could get at where he'd been hiding. From his new hidingplace, he watched her approach, frowning as she didn't seem to think she needed cover. He shouldered his rifle and took careful aim, catching her in the shoulder as he pressed the trigger.
As she fell, he moved off, with one of the marines in pursuit. For now, he managed to evade the hologram, quickly climbing up a sturdy tree, hiding between the leaves as he crouched on one of the lower branches.

Shimmering into existence, Mike looked round his surroundings ..
Naois was playing hi-tec 'hide n seek' with the new Cadet, and as Rampton didn't have much on at the moment, he thought he'd come and throw the proverbial spanner into the scenario.
Smiling, he crouched down, scanning left and right for any signs of movement. He hadn't bothered checking who the Cadet was, it was more fun finding him or her for himself.
He stopped his breathing instantly as he heard a sound directly behind him ... Turning slowly, he could see the green of a Marine uniform less than a meter away. He waited as the person passed by, then stood to look round .. Someone fell to his right, and he began to move toward the sound. He didn't much mind who he found, but it was always more enjoyable to come across the Cadet, if only to annoy Naois ..
The undergrowth was thick here, and he could stand unseen unless someone walked right into him. He watched the fallen person slowly rise, rubbing their shoulder from the phaser hit, and obviously annoyed at getting tapped. Mike silently stepped forward, placing one hand over the targets mouth, the other placed against the neck, two fingers finding the Carotid artery expertly, and began to apply pressure .. The target couldn't even struggle, they began to loose consciousness instantly, and Mike whispered in their ear ..
"Be quiet ...... I'm going to ease the pressure on the artery. You will feel better quickly, but I don't want you to utter a sound .. Nod if you agree."
Jane nodded, semi-conscious, but she felt the pressure ease on her neck and she felt stronger quickly. Mike began to lower her to the ground, and she moved with her assailant. Once down, Mike let go slowly.
Jane turned, but Rampton was quicker ! .. His hand closed on her throat once again, stemming any sound she was about to make. He could kill her easily. He put his finger to his lips, in the universal signal for silence, then released her again ..
"I'm Commander Rampton." he whispered, and could see that she knew who he was, he could also see by her expression, that she was puzzled by his appearance in the training scenario, "I assume you want to beat the Commandant ?" he said, grinning broadly ..........

The pressure Commander Rampton had applied to her neck had made her feel light headed. Jane felt annoyed at herself that she had allowed him to sneak up on her like that.
He made her an interesting proposition though she grinned back at him and said. “Okay but we do it my way sir.” All the marines had regrouped around her now and Jane quickly looked around at her surroundings and began to formulate a plan.
Turning to two of the marines she pointed a little to the left of where she suspected Captain Mercy to have ran. “You two double time one hundred meters down that way, when you get there make noise nothing to suspicious though, and loud enough to hear but keep your heads low.” Jane now turned to Commander Ramptom and the remaining marine and said. “We will go that way the broken branches indicate he ran in hurry down that way, he isn’t going to expect we have an extra man, and hopefully the noise those two marines will make will distract him long enough for us to shoot him, I will take point Commander Rampton you take middle.” Commander Ramptom moved to pick up Jane’s phaser rifle that she had dropped while she was incapacitated. Jane took the opportunity to lean over and whisper in the remaining marine’s ear quite enough so Rampton didn’t hear. “If he makes a move for me again shoot him.” Jane couldn’t take the chance that he was actually working with Captain Mercy.
Jane lead her team of three silently through the trees and bushes, after a few seconds she heard the two marines she sent out earlier making noise by snapping branches to the left of her about twenty metres to the north west of her. Jane pointed to the ground as she and her team knelt down. She was hoping that Captain Mercy would take the bait and leave his hiding place to investigate the noise. “Keep your eyes open.” Jane whispered....

" ...... those two marines will make will distract him long enough for us to shoot him, I will take point. Commander Rampton you take middle." Mike nodded, moving to pick up Jane's weapon, "If he makes a move for me again, shoot him." he hid a grin as he managed to overhear the Cadets' comment, then handed over the phaser rifle and stood waiting.
Jane began to move, noting the position of her other two Marines, she wanted to trap Mercy quickly. Pointing to the ground, she squatted, listening to the 'accidental' noise being made by her team ..
"Keep your eyes open." she said, raising her rifle in the direction she hoped the Captain would come from .. A few seconds past and she heard firing, then a dull thud. It was obvious that one of her team had been hit, she turned to make sure that Rampton and her remaining Marine knew what to do.
The move was wasted .. Rampton was gone .. So, unfortunately, was her Marine ! ..........

From his perch in the tree, Naois could clearly see two marines moving away, though he had no sight on Jane herself. Leaning the barrel of his rifle on the branch before him, laying himself as flat as was safely possible, he took aim at the marines. A limegreen beam erupted from the barrel, striking the holographic marine squarely in the chest.
His holographic companion fired a shot in the direction the beam had come from, and it just went over Naois' head, who lay flat on the branches. After the shot aimed at him, he swung his legs over, allowing himself to hang from the branch for a second, before dropping into a crouch into a bed of leaves. He'd been fairly high up, thus the drop did rattle his bones a little.
Almost immediately, allowing himself no time to recover, he moved off, into the opposite direction of the marines. Little did he know that he'd walk right into a trap...

Mike heard the shot, and noticed the Marine, less than a meter from him, turn in the direction of the thud. seeing Jane occupied, Mike moved ..
He hit the Marine straight in the throat. Not enough to crush the trachea, but enough to stem any air, or sound .. Then he stepped forward, catching the man cleanly with a blow under his raised arm. The nerve ganglia reacted instantly, removing all motor function, and mike caught him mid-fall.
He was only three meters away when Jane turned, but it was three meters too much, and she had no idea where the two men had vanished to ..
Moving round to the north, he pulled several item's from his pack as he found a secure spot to wait out his prey .. Which wasn't long in arriving. Rampton grinned as he watched the figure move silently past him, then acted ..
Several meters away, Naois felt a sharp pain in his left thigh, and turned to check the undergrowth for anything that could have 'stung' him .. Seconds' later, he felt a numbing sensation beginning to spread, from his upper thigh, down to his foot .. It dawned on him, too late, that he'd been hit, and he slumped to the forest floor, all sensation gone from the now useless leg.
Dragging himself into cover, he assessed his situation, and wondered who the hell had dared do this to him ...
Less than five meters away, a satisfied Mike put the small blow-pipe back into his pack, along with the leather case holding the remaining darts coated in various amounts of a drug named curare .. He loved it's varied effects, from killing instantly, to medicinal uses like muscle relaxant. Taking a last look at the Commandant, satisfied his leg would be useless for at least six hours, he moved away ..........

Naois couldn't understand what happened; one second he was going at a full run, the next he felt himself slow down after a sharp sting into his left thigh. He felt the numbness spread and for a moment he feared he was bit, even though the holodeck's safeties were on. Since he had no tricorder with him, he had no way of knowing for certain.
Quickly checking the ground, he found nothing that could've given him a poisonous bite. Except if there was anything he could do, it'd be already too late for his leg had gone completely numb and he slumped towards the ground. Using the remaining strength in his right leg, and his arms, he hauled himself to the safe cover of a few bushes.
There, he tore the fabric of his pant right up to his hip and checked his skin. However, he found no marks and wherever he probed, the nerves in his leg didn't give his brain the impulse of being touched, probed or even pinched. He had no feeling at all, and the leg didn't feel as though it was part of him any longer.
He experienced a twang of fear, though he reasoned that logically nothing could've bitten him, not with the holodeck safeties. Had Jane somehow managed to get at him, without him noticing her? He fought back his fear and rolled himself onto his stomach, as best as possible with his left leg unresponsive, aiming his rifle out, while listening for footsteps. He relaxed a little, but soon relaxed too much and found himself dozing off in the quiet of the forest, the rustling of the leaves and the quiet whistling of the birds.
At that moment, the remaining marine rushed past, confindent he was in pursuit of the wayward commandant. His keen eyes spotted something reflected in the sunlight that came through the trees and he sniggered softly. Seeing Jane approach, he signaled her to be quiet, then waved her over, pointing at the tip of the rifle that stuck out from under the bush, lightly held by a visibly relaxed hand, stretched out a little before the captain's unconscious body.

After hearing the shots Jane turned to make sure her team knew what he had planned but as she looked to where they should be they were gone. “Damn.” Jane whispered to herself it would seem Rampton had taken out her marine and vanished. Jane knew she couldn’t stay where she was. Standing up slowly jane made her way to where she heard the shots hoping at least one of her marines was left. After walking about twenty metres she saw a marine signal her and point to a phaser rifle sticking out of the bush. Jane crept up to the gun and pointed her own rifle into the bush, she grabbed the rifle out of the hand. It seemed to be too easy and jane pushed away the bush to see Captain Mercy laying there unconscious. Jane knew immediately this had to be Rampton’s doing Jane removed the power cell from the Captains phaser rifle and layed it back next to him. She had no idea when he would wake up and when he did he not having a working phaser would give her the upper hand. Jane clicked her finger and the marine followed her as she walked away from the captain, she had checked his pulse and determined he would be fine. If he wa badly injured the holodeck would shut down as the safety protocols were on.
Jane walked foreword intent on getting Rampton he had caught her once before and she was determined this time it was his turn.
Climbing up a tall tree Jane could see a good distance away while staying hidden behind a cluster of leaves. She couldn’t see Rampton at the moment but she could still see Captain Mercy. If Rampton made his way anywhere near him she would see him and not hesitate to shoot him..

Naois started awake, briefly confused as to his whereabouts and the reason why he was lying on a forest floor. Quickly though, memory resurface and he tried to get back to his feet. Much to his chagrin, his left leg wouldn't co-operate and he sagged back onto the ground, cursing under his breath.
He had to find a way to get himself moving again, he hated being this helpless and he hated being tricked even more. He didn't particularly mind losing at his own game, but he did mind if it happened through cheating. Scowling, he raised himself up by using a nearby tree, as well as his rifle, as leverage.
His sharp hearing picked up sounds nearby and he pressed himself flat against the tree, putting his full weight on his good leg, rifle held up and pressed against his chest, supported by his right hand, ready to fire.
One of the marines had regained consciousness as well and was now approaching rapidly, as though he was on to something. Naois aimed at the marine, then pressed the trigger. Nothing. He tried again but nothing happened. A quick check learned that his rifle was literally powerless, but it still had one use if nothing else.
With all his might, he tossed the rifle at the marine, catching him full against the shoulder. The marine staggered, but recovered quickly enough, being a hologram. Naois sighed, he was no unarmed and incapable of fleeing. As the marine came at him, he raised his hands to shoulder level, indicating defeat.

Jane looked back to where Captain Mercy was and she was mildly surprised to see him leaning on a tree indicating surrender. Jane took another look around just in case Commander Rampton was in view. After a minute of looking she was convinced either Rampton was too far away to see or too well hidden.
Climbing down the tree top Jane made her way to where Captain Mercyy was standing he was signalling surrender. Jane said to the marine who had his gun pointed at Mercy “keep your eyes open for Rampton.” Jane looked back to Captain Mercy and looked at him favouring one leg and asked. “What happened to your leg Captain?” Jane looked around suspicusly she had no idea if she was being played for a fool by both Mercy and Rampton but the fact that Captain Mercy was weapon-less. “I am sure Rampton is still around somewhere he has already taken out one of my marines while pretending to help me win against you.”
Walking away she turned back to Captain Mercy and said to the marine standing near him. “Stay with the captain and stay out of sight.” Walking into the jungle with heavier foliage Jane looked around for Rampton. She was stepping lightly and she kept her eyes and ears focused for any sign of Rampton. Jane was now determined to get Rampton and Captain Mercy didn’t know it yet but he was the bait..

Watching Jane approach Captain Mercy and the Marine, he grinned.
"Stay with the Captain, and stay out of sight." he heard her order the Marine, then she moved into the forest, obviously hunting for Rampton himself.
Satisfied that she was determined, he silently tapped his Comms badge ..
"Initiate transport."
As he de-materialized, he wondered how much effort the Cadet would put into hunting him down ..........

“What happened to your leg Captain?”
Naois looked up then steeled himself for the stun he fully expected to be coming his way. When it didn't, he relaxed a little, allowing himself to sag back to the ground as his other leg felt as though it was going numb as well. Not because of the curare but because of the constant weight on it. "I do not know," he answered honestly. "I was running away from my last position after disabeling one of the holograms when something appears to have stung me. However I can find nothing wrong, but my leg has lost all sensation."
The Vulcan shrugged. "I could cut myself on anything and still not feel it, so I opted to remain here. However I must have blacked out at some point, for I do not remember losing the powercell of my rifle." He pointed to the useless weapon. "At that point, my companion here pointed his weapon at me. I thought it wiser to surrender as I have no desire to get shot."
He listened to the cadet, then his eyes widened in surprise. "Rampton was here?" This time he positively scowled as she walked away, leaving the marine with him. Surprisingly, the marine's aim didn't waver, even though he was quite obviously unarmed and equally obviously not going anywhere. "Rampton!" he called out, as soon as Jane left, his voice carrying through the silent forest. "Rampton, show yourself!"
Nothing. After a while, he got a little tired of this game, and since he had already surrendered, carrying on was moot. "Computer, end program." He found himself sat on the holodeck floor, struggling to remain upright when his back suddenly lost the support of the holographic tree. The Vulcan tumbled backwards, biting back a cry of surprise. "Cadet Davison, please assist me. You did well in your exercise. However I have another challenge for you, as soon as the doctor sees to my leg. In the next scenario, your task is not to hunt me, but to protect me, and you WILL be challenged."
= next scenario, a few hours later =
Together with the cadet, Naois entered the holodeck. "The safeties are on 80% so we will get grazed but not quite injured. It will hurt, of course, and it will be dangerous for both of us. However if there was no chance of that, there would be no challenge, I am certain you would agree."
He ducked, as a projectile flew right over his head. "The enemy will try to capture me for interrogation," he explained, "your task is to get me to headquarters, without them getting to me."
He staggered back when a projectile grazed his upper arm and he gazed at the thin line of green blood in amazement. "That was...unexpected. I suggest you proceed as you believe is best. And I do mean as you believe is best, use any means necessary to get me to safety."

After helping Captain Mercy to sickbay to have his leg seen to Jane took the opportunity to return to her quarters and have a shower and something to eat. After taking her shower she sat down at the small dining table and began to eat her spaghetti and meatballs. After getting halfway through her lunch Jane decided to take a walk around to clear her mind. She still was unnerved that she had let Commander Rampton sneak up on her and take her down without a fight and to then trust him enough to turn her back on him. After an hour or so walking she checked the time and walked to the holodeck seeing Captain Mercy arrive shortly after she did. They both entered the holodeck and Jane was greeted by the site of a an empty city road. Captain Mercy turned to Jane and explained that she was charged with getting him safely to headquarters without letting him be captured. A bullet flew past Jane and grazed the Captains arm. He further explained that she could use any tactic and means necessary to ensure success.
Jane turned and saw a patrol of four humans dressed in a militaristic uniform heading for them with guns raised Jane turned back to Captain Mercy and said. “I would suggest we run.”
The two ran down the street until Jane saw something she could use to her advantage a small side street pulling the captains arm as she ran towards it they both pressed their backs to the wall and Jane peered back out onto the main street. Her first objective was to get a weapon looking around her immediate area she saw a discarded metal pipe picking it up she turned to Mercy and said. “Don’t move I am going to get us some guns.”
Waiting until the patrol neared the side street in pursuit of Mercy Jane swung the pipe hard into the leading man he fell with a thud before the other three reacted. Quickly dropping to the floor before one of them could hit her she swung again hard hitting another man in the side of the stomach as bent over in pain Jane swung again he fell to the ground. Dropping the pipe she rolled and quickly grabbed the closest gun. She felt a sharp pin as she was shot in the shoulder she could feel the blood as it trickled down her arm. Raising the gun she shot the other two in quick succession. After all four were dead she grabbed two more guns, giving one to Mercy and carrying one in each hand they continued down the main street in the direction of the headquarters...

Naois stood with his back pressed against the wall, holding his left arm as he marveled at the cadet's efficiency. He accepted the weapon she handed to him, though he wasn't too pleased at her three holographic marines insisting on surrounding him. "We need more weapons," he suggested, knowing exactly what would happen next.
Though getting shot hadn't been in the planning, and he was chagrined at the fact that he'd have to explain this to his wife later, it did add a twist to the plans. The wound on his arm wasn't deep and all it required was applying biocontrol to stop the bleeding, which he did.
He watched, with increasing interest as she left two marines to guard him, while she moved off to scout ahead, and probably find more weapons. Sufficiently distracted, he didn't notice that the guard to his left grabbed at his throat, when a dart effectively penetrated his trachea and paralysed him from the neck down, killing him in a second.
Naois turned to speak to the guard, then noticing the marine was on the floor, unmoving, his eyes wide in shock and quite lifeless. Turning, the Vulcan meant to bespeak the other marine, but he had disappeared altogether. Without guards, he was vulnerable to attack and since he wanted Jane to have the opportunity to actually keep him safe, he started to move after her.
A pressure in his right side stopped him and he started to turn around. The pressure increased and he froze. "Keep your hands where I can see them, Captain Mercy," a threatening voice behind him spoke. He could feel breath against his neck as his arms were wrenched behind his back.
The Vulcan briefly opted to struggle but he didn't want to risk further and more severe injury. His left leg still felt strange to him, and his left arm was burning. Not to mention that there was a gun pressed agains the very part of his body where his heart was situated. "What do you want?" he asked quietly, "you will not get away with it."
"What I want, is for you to remain silent or I'll be forced to gag you." His captor efficiently and tightly bound his hands, seeing Jane come back with the remaining marine. "Move," he ordered, giving the Vulcan a firm shove in the opposite direction. Once out of sight, his captor gagged him anyway, not that Naois would've called out. It was illogical, and dangerous.
Meanwhile, the remaining marine knelt beside the dead bodies of his partners. "They're dead, poisoned," he reported, "no sign of struggle, but where's the captain?"

Mike had been in the crew lounge for over an hour .. He wasn't due to fly for over forty eight hours, as his staff were running the flight simulations for him. He would only be needed for grading as the pilots were already qualified and taking refreshers .. While he was relaxing, he noticed a Marine enter, and smiled when he recognized the man. "Terry ..." Mike said, attracting the Marines attention, who waved and walked over, reaching the table at the sane time as a steward, "Drink ?" "Dam-buster !" Terry Collins said to the steward, turning a chair round, and throwing a leg over the back, sat down, " .... So .. Raptor .. What you doing, drowning your sorrows, or savoring a victory ?" Mike laughed, then a thought struck him .. "Hey .. Do you remember Borneo ..... When we we're told to stop a group of reb ...... ?" "Hell yes !" Collins said grinning broadly, " We sure showed them idio ......" "Fancy doing me a favor ?" Mike said .. An evil look forming on his face .......... ~~~~~~~~~~Beaming into the holo-suite, Terry checked his location against the readings he'd got from the corridor .. Satisfied, he set to work...
He took several strands of thread from his pack, developed for covert opps, but not exactly 'secret' now, and stretched them from one tree to another. Set at varying heights, so not easily seen, each one would induce instant vomiting in the person breaking the thread ..
Satisfied with his work, he took out one last micro-filament .. This one, gold in color, but still undetectable by tri-corder, and all but invisible by the Human eye .. It was less than a hundredth the width of a human hair .. This thread could be programed for anything from causing an itch, to decapitation, and a multitude of 'surprises' in between ..
Mike had left the 'surprise' the thread would impart, to his friend, and was confident it would be something to shock them ........ ~~~~~~~~~~"It's done." Terry said, on his return to the lounge .. "So what's going to happen if they break the gold thread ?" Rampton asked, taking a long drink. "Well as you know, we're in a training situation, so I can hardly do mortal harm ......" Collins said, seemingly disappointed, " ...... But I figure if I can't hurt em, then their situation will .. So I hope they can swim .. Because if anyone brakes that thread, everyone will find themselves half a kilometer out, in deep swells, from Waikiki beach, facing a seven meter wave .... Surfs up !" Mike looked at his friend in silence for a few seconds, then wondered if Naois' leg would cope with having to suddenly swim .........

Her last remaining marine bent down and examined the bodies of the two marines she left to guard Captain Mercy. Mercy was gone and Jane was not happy to say the least, she looked around and saw a trash bin that had been knocked over about ten metres down the small high street. She decided to head in that direction the small sign of a struggle was the best lead she had on where captain Mercy might be now.
The small side street just seemed to go on forever and Jane was about to completely lose her patience when she saw to men dressed in the same uniform as the four she had already dealt with enter a door into a small building. Jane slowed down her speed and silently crept up to the lone guard at the door. He didn’t notice her draw her weapon and didn’t know what hit him when she fired. Entering the building Jane followed the noise of a man shouting about wanting information.
Walking as softly as she could she entered the room where the shouting was coming from and saw Captain Mercy tied to a chair. He saw her but didn’t let any sign of relief show on his face. Jane crept up behind the interrogator and hit him hard in the back of the head with the butt of her gun. He fell immediately and Jane proceeded to untie Captain Mercy. “Lets get you to headquarters shall we.”
Leaving the building and heading back in the right direction they entered a park with huge trees towering over them. Walking along Jane saw a small gold glimmer about waist height she yelled. “Don’t move.” But it was to late Mercy had broken the trap wire.
The surroundings of the holodeck vanished. Jane and Mercy found themselves submerged in water. Swimming to the top Jane desperately looked around for Mercy but she didn’t see him. Diving back under water Jane saw him struggling to sim she pulled him up into the air where they took in deep breaths. Jane grabbed him by the collar and began swimming to the shore.
After what seemed like a eternity swimming they hit land a tropical beach. Jane lay on her back panting for air. She stood up and made a fist with her hand as she said. “Rampton.”
Looking back at Mercy she said. “If you will indulge me captain I would like to show you something that you have not had the chance to see me do yet, I believe as a Vulcan you will find this most interesting.”
After exiting the holodeck and consulting the computer as to Commander Rampton’s location Jane led the way as they made their way for the bar. Entering the bar Jane spotted Rampton laughing with a friend of his no doubt laughing at his smart trap no doubt. They had their backs to Jane and Mercy so Rampton didn’t see or hear her sneak up behind him. She slowly lifted her hand and grabbed his neck with her index finger and thumb. Rampton head dropped and hit the bar with a thud and Jane turned to Mercy smiling as she said. “Vulcan nerve pinch I am one of the very few Humans who have mastered it, Just thought you might like to have seen it, just in case.”

Naois followed her out, albeit a little unsteady on his feet after having been restrained. He wanted to get out of the building and into the 'fresh' air as soon as possible, even though he could've just simply called 'end program'.
"Don't move," he heard Jane call behind him, but it was already too late. He already felt sick, ready to drop to his knees to vomit however his stomach was empty and nothing came forth as he gagged. Unbeknowns to both, he'd tripped one of the green wires and now as he tripped the gold one, the room swirled dizzyingly around them.
Naois gasped in shock as he found himself sinking fast and he thrashed about himself in a desperate effort to get back to the surface. He never learned how to swim, not even at the academy, where he had preferred holodeck martial arts and covert training over learning how to swim. His parents never thought to teach him either as there were no pools on Qualinost nor had he ever indicated he wanted to.
His air expelled, he sank even faster but before he could go too deep he felt someone grab his collar and haul him back to the surface. He gasped for air, mixed with the still persistent gags of wanting/needing to vomit. On top of that, he'd taken several mouthfuls of seawater and he was really starting to feel sick.
"End program," he finally gasped as they lay on a tropical beach. He half-listened as she deducted that Rampton had once again been behind the nasty twist in his training program. A little pale-faced, and still fighting between gagging and gasping for breath, the Vulcan followed her to the bar, where to his utter surprise she nerve-pinched his friend.
Then and there, he burst into laughter, the first real laugh in a while. "That is a good trick," he smiled, "and it serves him right for interfering in my trainings." He turned to the beaming cadet. "You have done quite well, tough there are some things you need to improve on." Quietly, he told her where she'd gone wrong in the hunt. "Never assume that your opponent is harmless, even when he appears to be unconscious. It is safer to stun your opponent when it seems unnecessary, than becoming a victim due to carelessness."
He paused as he watched her. "Equally, your job was to keep me safe. You failed doing so because you walked away. Next time, send out your marines but stay with your charge as you are the best trained person to do so. Your rescue however was swift, and I thank you for keeping me from drowning."
He retrieved a PADD from one of the sogged pockets in his pants, frowned as it flickered then died. "The water defected my PADD," he stated logically, "however, you are hereby officially graduated from the academy and promoted to Ensign. Your assignment is the USS Dark Phoenix, as senior marine officer. You may report at your earliest convenience, they are currently docked at Resurrection."
Naois walked over to Rampton, shaking him. "Commander Rampton, why are you asleep while on duty?" he snapped, though there was still the hint of a smile on his face even through his pallor.

" ...... sure they will appreciate the joke." Mike said.
"Well if they don't, I wouldn't want to be you mate." Terry said, grabbing the empty glasses before heading toward the bar.
Rampton grinned as he recalled what his friend had managed to set up. He started to turn to see how Terry was doing, when he felt a slight touch on his neck. He didn't have time to react as his vision vanished, along with his consciousness, and he slumped to the floor ..
"Vulcan nerve pinch .." Jane said, matter-of-factly, "I am one of the very few Humans who have mastered it. Just thought you might like to have seen it, just in case."
Naois looked at his Chief Flight Instructor, then to the newly graduated Lieutenant.
"He's going to want to learn that now." he said, motioning to the motionless figure on the deck A moment later Terry arrived with the drinks, and sighing, bent to retrieve his friend.
Mike was coming round, but slowly .. He looked at each person in turn before settling on Davison.
"Nice trick." he said, rubbing his neck, "You'll have to teach me that one day ... How's the leg Captain ?" he finished, looking at Naios.
"Sensation is ... Returning ... Commander." Mercy said, taking less than a second to realize 'who' had incapacitated him earlier, "May I inquire what you used ?"
"My favorite." Mike said, picking up his drink, "Curare ....."
"Indeed." the Captain replied, raising an eyebrow, then raised a hand, "I should also inform you that I have graduated Marine Lieutenant Davison."
Several cheers went up and Terry, ever the host, jumped up.
"Thats drinks on the Captain then !" ..........
