James walked off the shuttle craft and onto the ressurection with a quiet air of confidence, he wanted to do well and his background in security would help him pass with flying colours. As he looked around the resurrection he found himself wondering where he should go to report in.
“Excuse sir” He shouted across the hall to a stranger passing by. “I’m new at the academy and I was wandering weather you could help me out, I need to know where I report in”
The man was himself a Starfleet officer and a high ranked one at that. The man had no problems given him directions, and off he went. When he arrived he saw his instructor and and approached him.
“Sir cadet smith reporting in for duty sir” He saluted.
He felt quite nervous standing there with his hand flat and pointed sharply at the side of his head. It was the first time he had felt nervous since his enrolment, but he knew he was going to do well, he had to.
Joining Starfleet had been an act of rebellion against his family since they had stopped him marrying a girl from a family which rivalled his own families business. They would be together one day. But she had just been wed into an unhappy arranged marriage. Which was when he signed up.
He had to prove to himself that he had what it took, then he would go back and face the women he loved with dignity and pride.

ooc: due to Resurrection being currently in shambles, and Naois on mission, I am placing this training mission in the future, after Resurrection is fixed and repaired. Approximate timeline: 3 months in the future.
ic:
Captain Naois Mercy watched the nervous youngster approach and ask for the academy. "This is the academy," he answered, appearing right beside the young man out of nowhere. "Please, do not mind the rubble and clutter. We are only just halfway through repairs on this station. It was attacked several months ago, and nearly destroyed."
He beckoned the cadet to follow him into what was left of his office. "You must be Cadet James Smith, I have been expecting you," he continued, picking up a PADD from his desk. "However your application form did not specify what department you wished to train in." He paused, taking in the bewildered look on the cadet's face. "You must forgive me, I am being inconserate. I am Captain Naois Mercy, Academy Commandant and counselor aboard this station."
He motioned towards a seat. "Please have a seat and tell me what brought you here and what you wish to train in."

James hadn’t really noticed the state of the station, whoever was repairing it had done a damn fine job so far. The captain introduced his self and explained what had happened to the station several months previously.
He motioned towards a seat. "Please have a seat and tell me what brought you here and what you wish to train in."
“Sir I would like to train in security, what bought me here is my love of Starfleet” He lied “And ambition to help the galaxy and all it’s in habitants”
He couldn’t help but feel that a part of that statement might have been true, under different circumstances but the truth was he had to get away from the life he had been living and hopefully start a new one in Starfleet.

Naois scrutinised the young man before him, one slanted eyebrow risen as he pondered his motives. "Very well," he continued. "Let us get you started on security procedures." He remembered an incident several months ago, to which the details were still very sketchy to him, though going on his closest friend's comments, something was shady about it.
"You walk into the quarters of a senior officer after being alerted to a security issue. On the floor you find a dead body, obviously shot at point blank range." His face didn't show any emotion as he gave the cadet the details of the scenario. "In the quarters you find also the senior officer in question. He shows signs of torture but does not remember anything prior to waking up from a state of unconsciousness. How will you proceed?"

James couldn't believe how relatively simple this was going to be. He looked at His instructor a smile crossing his lips, he was about to answer when his mind stopped him. The smile dissapeared. This could be a trick question he thought to himself, There must be more to the story than he looked torchered. Tha obviously suggested the two men had either been in a scuffle or the dead man had been torchering the officer. This was the question how do you handle the situation?. The smile had left his lips as soon as he saw the seriousness on Mercy's face. Was there some kind of hidden answer in the question or was it just a matter of each different individuals answer the way they would hadle the matter best in the interest of security.
The fact that the suspect was also a high ranking officer put pressure on the situation, but nobody is above the law. Then the issue came back on self defence, but he would still need to prosecute. He began to open his mouth and saw his instructor raise an eyebrow. He stopped himself and thought abit more about it and thought of his beloved Clara the women responsible for him being here.
This gave him all the confidence and clarity he needed. He looked down at his desk a few moments remembering the question, then he raised his head in confidence.
"Well sir obviously innocent or guilty the officer is still a suspect, because he is at the scene of the crime" He paused waiting for an answer but when none was given he carried on " i personally and in the interest of the investigation would call for help, take the officer into custody quietly so as not to harm his reputation if found innocent then i would begin an investigation starting with who is the murder victim then the suspect and build a scenario and a profile of each man........" He realised his answer was too long. Well he had and his instructor who had stopped him with a raised hand. James felt all the colour rush to his cheeks and blushed without realising as he waited for the silenceto break.

"The victim is female," Naois interrupted, "and there appears to have been a struggle for the phaser. Your line of reasoning, however is logical. The officer would be suspect because he is the only one in the room besides the dead body. But, what if there was a third or a fourth party? How would to confirm that the officer was the only one present, when the woman was killed? How do you prove that the officer did not inflict the torture upon himself to elude questioning? How do you prove the woman was the agressor and not the officer?"
Valid questions, Naois mused as he regarded the cadet before him. He was clearly uncomfortable but Naois already saw he had a keen mind. "Come with me," he said, as he rose from his seat. "We are going to the holodeck and you will show me how you will proceed." That was, assuming the holodeck was in working order by now. The station was still in shambles and though Naois had recovered from the initial shock of seeing his home damaged, he had grown used to it by now.
He paused briefly as they approached the holodeck, thinking how his wife would feel about the station now. She was safe aboard a starship, but he still missed her very much. Shaking his head, he keyed in the parameters for the program then waited for the holodeck to announce they could enter.
As the doors opened, Naois froze, flooded by memories. He saw the cadet pass him and enter but it was all in a haze. He shook his head, now wasn't the time to question the setting of the scenario. "Proceed," he told his cadet, then stood aside to watch the security cadet set to work.
<ooc: mr smith you may either have a holographic officer or assume naois takes that part. up to you>

As Captain Mercy programmed the scenario into the holodecks computer. James felt those butter flies in his stomach again, this training was going from simple to extreme in quick succession. It a matter of moments the walls on the holodeck began to flutter and before he knew it he was standing in the quarters, faceing the officer. He could also see the dead women lying on the ground, the reality of the simulation made him nauseous having never been near a dead body before. Especially that of a female. Keep cool he reminded himself it is just a simulation. He felt sorry for the holographic image of the women on the floor, for it had once been a real situation and the deceased a real person. But he didn’t dwell on his thoughts too long. "Proceed," he told his cadet, then stood aside to watch the security cadet set to work. “Sir What happened here?” Great going idiot it was clear what had happened here, someone had been murdered. “Well, I… she tried to kill me, it was self defence, I was being held at gun point.” He stuttered his words which was a dead give away to the cadet. “Ok sir don’t panic, I’m going to have to take you into custody until we figure out what’s going on?” He tapped his com badge before the officer could protest. “Security to bridge could send to security officers to my location” He paused waiting for an acknowledgement then turned to the officer, “Just a precaution sir, you are not under arrest but I am going to have to question you ok” The officer nodded. James then got on with the next part he crouched down over the women’s body to examine her. He tapped his com badge again. “security to bridge I also need a CMO.” again he waited for the computer simulated response and continued to examine the crime scene. Had their been a fight over the phaser or had he just simple killed her, he had to find something to show a sign of a struggle or murder. Then a moment of clarity, if there was a struggle then the victim would have marks on her body to show, and so would the officer. “Sir when the CMO Arrives we are going to examine you ok, before she examines the victim” “Victim” the officer shouted “I’m the victim here, and you are treating me like a suspect” “Sir everyone is a suspect here, you, her and anyone who might have access to your quarters” James parried the officers response. OOC I decided to opt for the computer simulation but i think i left some wiggle room for you to get involved

Naois stayed in the background, unnoticed so far by the holographic officer. He approved of the cadet's methods, though perhaps a little more diplomacy could be used. The officer was clearly stricken but he nodded in agreement.
The doctor walked in, spotted the dead body as well as the officer, then glared at Smith. "What is a cadet doing in charge of an investigation, where is your teacher?"
"Here," Naois spoke up, stepping out of the shadows. He didn't look too comfortable with the situation, looking nearly as pale as the secured officer. "Your Commander Tenee is under suspicion of killing Ensign Waters in cold blood. He claims self defense."
The doctor nodded, kneeling besides the corpse. "Have you touched her?" she snapped at Smith, wanting to hear his observations. "And what about you?" she snapped at Naois.
"I have not touched the crime scene," Naois responded, "and I have not spoken to the commander. Kindly direct your conclusions to Cadet Smith, it is his investigation." He heard the doctor make a scoffing sound, then nodded encouragingly to the cadet. "Continue, Mr Smith."
note: it's woman when just one, women when more than one. no biggie...good work on the investigation.

James was outraged by the idea of such unprofessional behaviour, everybody knew not to touch the body of the crime scene before it can be examined. But he answered politely.
“no I have not touched the victim, but I would like you to examine Commander Tenee first for anything like scratches, bruises anything that looks like torture or self defence wounds.” The doctor gave commander Tenee the once over as they waited for the two security men, but she did not reveal her conclusions yet.
A short while mid-way through examining Ensign waters, The two security men arrived and were instructed to take the commander into custody to await questioning. James turned to the doctor and asked.
“Did he have anything?” James asked
“Burns on his wrist, which suggests he was tied, but anyone could have caused that, meaning the injury wasn’t as fresh as I would have liked for it to be today.” The CMO replied.
“So it could have been from anytime?” James queried
“Anytime in the past couple of days”
“So he could have been held captive” He said to himself.
“ Could be, now if you’ll excuse me I’d like to examine Ensign Waters”

Keeping a little distance, Naois observed the exchange between the doctor and the cadet. This was good, he was treating it as an actual scenario, rather than a holodeck program. He didn't, however feel very comfortable with the cadet's conclusions. For several minutes, he remained silent as the cadet seemed to forget he was even there.
"Let the doctor examine the body of the woman," Naois then whispered to Smith, "while you try to reconstruct the crime scene. Would there have been a struggle? Who held the phaser first? Could she have shot herself during a struggle where she meant to actually kill him? Was the officer strong enough to break free from the bonds? Note that Tenee is Vulcan, could he have been sufficiently angered to break free?"
He crossed his arms over his chest, gazing down at the cadet with a certain expectancy. "Pretend I am Commander Tenee. I am Vulcan. How do you proceed with the reconstruction?" He wanted Smith to show him exactly what he thought had happened. "I am aware of the Vulcan non-touch policy, but you may move me where you want me, and I shall comply without question."

Mercy stood awaiting the Cadets instructions. Right this is it James thought to himself it was time to show him what he could do. He politely asked Mercy to move near to where the Commander Tenee had been sat, But asked him to stand.
“Now I know we have been discussing the torture theory but I would like to take a different angle” James said and captain Mercy complied but looked confused. “Now what if the two had some sort of affair or arrangement, one cheated on the other or broke the agreement. Now I am going to assume it is the Ensign, Now I am outraged by the accusation and pull out my phaser” James mocked pulling out the phaser and pointed the imaginary weapon at Captain Mercy.
“Now I don’t intend to use it, but I am that upset that I want to scare you, You try to calm me down, you move closer……… err sir I need you to move slowly towards me” Mercy moved slowly towards Smith acting like he was trying to calm things down “ Now you get close enough, there’s a struggle for the phaser and it goes off, Now lets assume the Ensign is already married and it is an affair then you wouldn’t want to find out your wife is having an affair so you make it look hostile, or if the this arrangement is something illegal, well you are a high ranking officer so you don’t want to get in trouble, so again you turn the situation to make you look like the victim.” James paused awaiting the applause that wouldn’t come.
Although he had gone in a different direction with the case, he hoped it showed that he could think outside the box, and see things that wouldn’t normally be observed.

"Well reasoned," Naois agreed, sitting down on the chair Tenee had occupied earlier. "Except Commander Tenee is full Vulcan, enjoys a satisfying marriage and has two teenage children. Vulcans...do not cheat on their bondmates. It is illogical and unheard of."
He watched the cadet with interest, he was certainly creative in coming up with theories. "And how do you explain the fact that Commander Tenee was tied up? What would enrage a Vulcan enough to break free of his bonds? You saw the bruises on his arms, the ropes had been tight. She was the aggressor, if she had not been, they would not have been as tight. Agreed?"
The Vulcan rose to his feet and glanced around the room. "She was not running from him, she was facing him when she was killed. How do you explain that? Did you check the phaser for his fingerprints?" He sighed. "Computer, one phaser with discharged battery." The weapon appeared in the air and he nodded for Smith to take it.
Once he had it, he charged the surprised cadet, trying to get at the weapon. It made a sound when the fire button was touched and Naois stepped back. "Check it for my fingerprints," he encouraged.

He had known that Commander Tenee was a Vulcan But that was the ignorance of being human, he had not been paticularly hot on the topics of other species in school. So he was not sure of different cultures and facts that needed to be addressed in a situation like this. Mistake one. Mistake Two, you always check the weapon for finger prints.
His mistake, but he was going to put it right, he checked the Phaser for Captain Mercy's fingerprints and found one set of fingerprints which he had to match with Mercy.
He matched a set to Mercy and was way ahead on the task of checking the Phaser used in the actual incident. Amazingly enough whilst he checked the Phaser for finger prints he again only found one set. He knew what this meant, No struggle.
James hung his head low looking at the floor. this was not going to be as easy as he thought, now the next question was motive he knew it was coming. what had enraged the vulcan?, why was the Ensign in this room holding Commander Tenne captive. These were questions that he had to find out.

"Errors happen," Naois reassured his cadet, "and you are here to learn." He took the empty phaser from the cadet and set it aside. "Now, what have you learned so far in this scenario?"
The Vulcan listened as the cadet recounted what he had learned so far. "Very good," he praised, "have you checked the history of Waters and Tenee? Their working relationship?" He handed his PADD to the cadet. "There was a restraining order issued against the ensign by starfleet security. She was to stay away from him."
He paused, fighting down his own discomfort and was now starting to question his own motives for this particular scenario. His breathing quickened and he wanted to leave the holodeck, but he couldn't. He had to assist his cadet, teach him how to analyse a crime scene. "What would have motivated her to tie him up in his own quarters?" he asked Smith, "name one thing that would drive a woman so far."

James again looked out of place. He had considered looking into the background of the two’s working relationship. But as usual he just jumped in with head first. Just like when he fell for the daughter of a family whose business rivalled his own families. He decided now only when it was too late that he was going to follow the suggestion of his instructor. He wandered if he would be able to ask Captain Mercy himself or whether it was a part of the simulation exercise.
Any good investigation started with an in depth background check on the parties involved in the crime. And he hadn’t done one, the Background check nine times out of ten would give you all the information required to piece a scenario together. He pondered on it for a moment and then decided to go with his first gut instinct this time.
He turned to Mercy “Sir do you happen to have a Background report on the two” Before he could finish asking the captain, Mercy produced a Padd and handed it to James who looked rather flustered and drained by the whole exercise.

Naois could see his cadet was looking tired and flustered. "You are doing well so far," he encouraged, "please answer my question. What could have motivated her to trap him in his own quarters and tie him up like that. What would drive a woman to go so far?"
He waited patiently for his cadet to answer. When he took his time, he spoke up. "After you answer this question, we will take a break. It is almost lunch time."

Post by jamessmith on Dec 15, 2007 12:55:38 GMT
James was motivated by the fact that they would have a break, he tried to think of it from a woman’s point of view. What would drive a woman to the point of tying up a man, well a vulcan and superior office in his own quarters. Especially after a restraining order was put out on her. Why was a restraining order put out on her anyway? These were the questions that could solve the case.
James could only think of one thing that could drive a woman to this point. Rejection. He was unsure of the word that was about to come out of his mouth, he got a dry throat nervous about the answer. Could it have just been that she didn’t like Vulcan’s? Maybe he did something to really tick off the Ensign, so maybe the R word was revenge.
To James there were a number of reasons that could, in his mind, drive a woman so far. All these reason’s began to spin around in his head they started to make him feel dizzy, so he got his head together and decided to choose just the first on that popped out of his mind.
He looked at his instructor partially for help and partially for given the answer. He took a deep breathe and let it out again.
“Rejection” James said now he wished he would have said revenge.

Naois visibly shivered, as he thought back on his own investigation several months ago. He still had no memory of the most part of it, and he understood now that he might never remember. "Rejection," he acknowledged. "Hell hath no greater fury, than a woman scorned."
He turned his back on the cadet, not wanting him to see the emotion that crossed his face. "Have you ever been rejected cadet? Or have you ever rejected a woman?"

James realised that he kept grabbing straws and the Captain kept putting them back in the box again ready to be taken out again. This was one intense training course.
“Well sir, I have but it’s complicated” James said then he thought he might as well finish “We were supposed to marry but she is the daughter of my fathers rival in business. And now she is married to some other guy in an arranged marriage And now here I am trying to make a life in star fleet” He spread his arms out in a shrugging gesture.

"And how did you react to that rejection?" Naois questioned, turning back to face him. "Did she reject you? More than once?"
He pointed at the markings of where Ensign Waters' body had lain. "She was rejected several times. Commander Tenee could not return her affection and told her to leave him alone. She, however kept harassing him, which resulted in the restraining order."
His expression grim, he gazed directly at his cadet. "I too, have rejected a woman, repeatedly. She nearly killed me for it."

James thought about it for a short while before answering the question.
“No she didn’t reject me more than once, she didn’t want to reject me” He looked at the grim expression on the face of the captain. “ I’m sorry sir, it must be tough being a Vulcan”

ooc: do please expand on your posts a little, twoliners are not accepted as posts. I, however, have the instruction role and thus am allowed the twoliners to ask clarifying questions.
ic: "Half Vulcan," Naois corrected, "my father is Human. And it was not tough as I rejected her. She claimed to be my mate in a spur of maddness and has been deluded since then. JAG issued a restraining order against her as she was hindering me in performing my duties."
He hesitated a brief moment. "She attacked me, poisoned me and nearly killed me several months ago. I was forced to kill her to defend the lives of myself and my wife, then fiancée. Had I not, she would first have killed her, and then me."
For a moment, Naois berated himself for revealing this information. "Now, knowing this, how do you justify the situation here in these quarters? When you have answered this, we shall take a lunch break and I will show you around on what is left on this station."

James looked from Captain Mercy to the computer simulation on the holodeck. He thought about the question again, He’d been doing a lot of thinking in the past couple of hours, Some of it right some of it wrong but all of it learning. He also thought it would be a good idea to get something to eat, something resembling a horse. He had become hungry during the simulation. And it would be a good idea as well to get to know the station and his instructor.
Now he knew all the facts, what was the right answer? Murder was never right but what was right was the fact that if Commander Tenee hadn’t killed Ensign Waters he would not be seeing his family again and that could be classed as self defence. He had killed Ensign Waters because he had come to the stage where there was no other choice and that was agreeable to him. She had force her emotion’s upon him and when politely declined she had gone to such measures as to attempt to kill him.
James Realised a whole lot of things about Vulcans now and he knew this would come back to give him the knowledge and experience he needed to carry out his duties in Starfleet. He looked back to Captain Mercy.
“Sir, it was self defence. The situation became out of control for Commander Tenee And to the point where it left him no option but to kill Ensign Waters to save his own life.” He replied to Mercy’s Question.

"Well reasoned," Naois concluded. "Computer, save program, then end."
=^=Program saved at current setting=^= the computer replied and the holodeck was restored to the black and yellow grid.
"Let us find ourselves something to eat," the Vulcan suggested. "I have not eaten in several hours."
Together they found their way to the mess hall, where Naois ordered a vegetarian stew and a large mug of coffee for himself, leaving the choice for his cadet up to himself.
As they found a table, Naois intently stared at Smith. "What are your impressions of your training so far? Is there anything, besides target practice and duelling, that you find lacking? We will get to target practice after lunch and I will challenge you to a duel. Do not worry, phasers are only set to a mild stun."

As they sat at a table Mercy asked the question of all questions. It was a question James was unsure of himself, he had found the training quite good and fulfilling but it had been himself lacking in certain area’s. Target practice had been a suggestion and a good one. It was a nice change of pace to go from mentally absorbing to something a bit more active and he welcomed it.
“I think the training is good” He actually said “ but I think it is me lacking something” Mercy nodded the cadet to carry on “ I think I lack patience in conducting myself, I just jump in to quickly without considering what might happen next”
He took a moment to absorb what he had just said, he had just admitted to himself one of the things he thought he was good at he wasn’t that good at it yet. But that was why he was here, to train in the field he had wanted to serve in as a Starfleet officer. And he had walked in so full of confidence and wanted to do well. He thought he knew it all but he didn’t. And the training exercise had pointed this out to him.
“Anyway, I think target practice would be a nice change of pace” he smiled at the captain.

"Patience is something you learn through trial and error," Naois reassured the younger man, "and trust me, it is something you will never stop at learning for either. Even at my age, I am still learning to be patient in some area's, while also learning to be more abrupt in others. And being half Vulcan does not make things easier, because people have certain expectations of you."
He stabbed away at his food, somewhat restless. "You are expected to be emotionless, and when you are not you are being judged upon it. I have learned to ignore that and just do what I feel is right. I have married a Betazoid woman, something my closest friend did not approve of at first. But once he got to know her and learned of our motivations, he approved. It was an emotional decision, one I was not expected to make."
Naois drank down his coffee and chewed away on another forkful of food. He looked thoughtful for a long time. "Your time here in the academy is meant to make you realise you never stop learning. Life is one giant learning experience, trust me."
When they were done, Naois showed the cadet around on the station, ending the tour in the academy's training area. "Take your pick of a weapon," Naois encouraged him, "your goal is to try and defeat me at all cost. Your weapons will not actually hurt me, though they will almost have the same effect as the real weapon. Equally, you will not be harmed by my defensive weapons."
