off: I am going to assume this is around a week after the wedding, to avoid putting myself in two places at the same time.
on:
Captain Mercy walked across the newly restored corridors that lead to his equally restored office. He was barely sat when there was a knock on the door. "Come," he called, though his mind was lightyears away. He didn't look up at first, but when he finally did, he couldn't help but suppress a startled gasp.
Before him stood a fairly tall Romulan, clearly middle-aged, yet dressed in a cadet's uniform. "Can I help you cadet?" Naois asked politely, waving him over to a seat. "Obviously, you are here for training, but I have yet to receive any information about cadets that are coming here for training. Especially with the starbase being under reconstruction after that terrible attack."
His expression clouded over in sadness as he was reminded of that time, the many deaths that still haunted him. "Please make yourself comfortable. I am Captain Naois Mercy, and you are...?"

"Sir, I am Goran Talnak Rhian S'harien, recently arrived from my home on Romulus. I have taken care of my affairs there, and have no reason to return home. I am reporting to apply for the training for Ships Counselor of the Dark Phoenix," his voice was low when speaking.
" I have no wish to return to security duty, either, sir, for that is no longer a desire of mine, for I have had the opportunity to serve as Chief Tactical Officer aboard the Fang, although I regret not being there when it was lost, having been at a funeral for my uncle."
He looks directly into the eyes of Captain Mercy with guarded emotion.

Goran looks Captain Mercy up and down. Impressed with the look in the captains eye as a no nonsense type of person, he relished being back in military duty.
Sitting down, Goran hid a smile, seeing the look on the face of the captain about his appearance, he knew that he would be up to the challenge.
He has never got used to the presence of most vulcans, even hybrids, except his sister, but he felt.....comfortable with this one. He hopes this one will be up to the challenge of Goran.

Looking closely, he also noticed the sadness in the face of Captain Mercy, and could only wonder if the same sadness over the loss of both father and uncle showed on his.

"I am...sorry to hear about the loss of the Fang," Naois replied thoughtfully. "Though, was that ship not lost about twenty-six years ago? I remember hearing about it when I was a child. My parents are both medical officers and they were kept update on the search attempts."
The Vulcan paused, checking a few details on his computer terminal. "At any rate, you wished to train as a counselor? It appears you are in luck that I am a counselor by default training then." He offered a small smile at the older Romulan. "I assure you that I have no issues with training a Romulan. One of my closest friends is part Romulan, and I honestly would not want to get into a fight with him. He would win any given day."
Naois motioned towards the replicator in his office. "Please, help yourself. You must be thirsty after your journey. Why did you choose counseling to train in?" He was always curious to see why people chose counseling, or any other given department. You do realise that I am going to ask you to asses me? It is standard for my counseling cadets that they spend some time giving me a psychological evaluation. It helps me asses their capabilities. You may proceed when you are ready."
Naois shoved a PADD forward. "You may have a few minutes to prepare yourself, by reading through my personal file."

Picking up the Padd, Goran began perusing the data provided him by Captain Mercy. He started by going over the psyche file, then scrolled up to his personal file. Glancing at the medical file, the part about almost having his right leg severed made him raise his eye-brows, knowing what it means to lose such a thing in ones life.
Noticing several things he considered to be good qualities in a counselor, he put the Padd down, and looked back to the captain.
"First off, your question about the fang is correct, except it was more like 27 years ago. I was part of the crew, and was not there, having been away at a funeral. Your second question was that why I would want to be trained as a counselor. Easy. I have lead a life in two different settings that took peoples lives. I want to change that. I want to be able to help people with their issues, instead of being it."
Looking down at the Padd, he thought a bit more. "You are the type of person that seeks answers, but has a hard time dealing with the emotional bombardment of too many people in a single setting. You choose to be cautious about your everyday dealings in hopes of not being in another crash like the one you were in a few years ago. You are involved with a being not quite like the others, because you feel closer to her, not just for saving your life, but because you two are closer in "personality" than any others aboard the Dark Phoenix."
Sighing, he looked at the replicator, and orders a glass of spring water.....Looks back at the captain with questioning eyes......

"You are mistaken," Naois replied coolly, masking any hint of annoyance. "My shutlecrash, where I was severely injured was several months ago, prior to the partial destruction of this station." He tapped the PADD. "It is all in here, in my medical file. There are also security files of the incident attached as well. My wife was my physician at the time, and had it not been for her, I would not be here today."
With a sigh, he leaned back in his seat, sipping his tea. "You may try again Cadet S'harien. You are, after all in training. How would you conduct a full psychological assessment on an unwilling patient? Pretend I am unwilling to co-operate with you. What did your training prior to coming here teach you?"
The Vulcan crossed his arms over his chest, putting on the most annoyed look he could muster and positively glared at the Romulan. "I will not submit to psychological testing," he proceeded, smoothly sliding into his role as though it were second nature to him.

Looking into the eyes of the annoyed Vulcan, Goran calmly placed his fingers together. "Would you care to give me an explanation as to why you refuse a psychological testing," he asked in a tone that stayed monotonous.
"If you do not want testing, then we can sit here and.....talk. Nothing more. It is your choice."
He then raised his left eye-brow, and steepled his fingers further in the custom of his cousins the Vulcans.
He could also not keep his mind off of his previous training in the Rihannsu Military Academy. He did not think torture would work in a situation like this, maybe if there was an attack on the starbase, and someone were captured, but not now......

"I have had enough of counselors," Naois replied stoically, further sliding into his act. Except it wasn't quite an act; though he was a counselor himself and he prided himself on being reasonably good, he wasn't too fond of being the subject of a counselor's close scrutiny. He mirrorred the cadet's motions and rested his hands before him on the desk, slightly leaning forward.
The Vulcan returned the Romulan's stare. "You do not intimidate me," he challenged, "though you are Romulan, and probably trustworthy, I do not trust counselors. They always have an agenda on their own." He would challenge this particular person to his limits, to see how far he would go to treat a patient.
"My wife is a doctor, to be connected to her is sufficient and enough healing for me." He reached for his cup and drained the last of his coffee, though he kept his eyes on the older man. The irony, Naois thought as he stared back at the Romulan, gauging him. He was much, much older than he was, at least four times his own age was his guess.
"Do you have a family?" he finally asked, allowing the cadet some leeway. "I do. I got married last week and I am very close to my parents. I have an older brother, though he died before I was even born."

Off: Was really sick, stuck in bed with a nasty flu, my apologies...
on: Goran looked back at the Vulcan, and smiled. "Whether or not I have a family is not the point. The point is, I have been sent here to talk with you, and get to know you. I am merely carrying out my orders, and so far they do not tell me to torture you, so, intimidating you is not on my agenda. I am simply here to learn of you, about you, and any information you wish to give me."
Reaching over and taking the cup from Mr. Mercy, he walked to the replicator, and ordered more coffee. Setting aside the empty cup, he brought the new cup to him, setting it in front of the Vulcan. Smiling again, he sat down and looked back to the "subject".......

The muscles in his face twitched ever so slightly upon hearing the word 'torture' and his gaze hardened a little. "Exactly what are your orders? You mean to say you do not intend to join Starfleet? Cadet S'harien, are you sent here to spy on us?"
While the possebility was remote, it was still a possebility and after hearing the Romulan's last words, Naois' guard was up. "And what will you do if I do not co-operate in your getting to know me game? I shall have you know I am not easily intimidated. I grew up on a starbase, my mother's closest friend is Romulan, and I met many alien species during my youth."
He watched wearily as the Romulan picked up the cup he had just emptied and seconds later replaced it with a steaming full one. "Thank you," he commented, but didn't touch the cup. "What is your agenda S'harien. You claim you want to learn, but you just mentioned to have others, which could not have come from Starfleet."

"Excuse me, sir, for I thought we were doing an excercise. If I am mistaken, I apologize. As for family, I have a sister, half-sister actually, and a nephew I have not seen in 27 years. And my orders were to report to you, and I have done so."
Goran looked confused, thinking through different scenarios on how this little accident could have happened......
"Yes this is an exercise," Naois replied coldly, "however your statement has me concerned. I am your instructor, but I am also a starfleet officer. An officer who has to take the safety of the Federation at heart and who will have to take care not to get too involved in political issues."
He sighed. "Yes you reported to me. Anyway, a half sister and a nephew you have not seen in twenty-seven years. Interesting." His expression softened a little. "However, I asked you to assess me. As a counselor, how would you describe my responses to you, were this situation actual. And how would you assess my general appearance as starfleet officer, taking into account my recent marital status, as well as my most recent starfleet records."

Looking at the Captain, Goran shifted uncomfortably in his chair.
"Sir, you know full well that the training at the Rihannsu Academy for Inteligence Officers and Security Officers requires a course of interrogation that the Federation would find.....distasteful and unwanted. The fact that I have such training should not deter you from wanting me with the Federation. What if I have come across with information that our enemies have wanted, and my training allows me to overcome their techniques on obtaining such information? Would you welcome it then? You ask me to evaluate your reaction with my "questioning". All right. You seem hostile, whether it is to make me learn a lesson on how some of the crew will feel about counseling, or whether you have had a bad experience with a counselor your-self. Hostility will only lead to longer sessions, or possibly a more confined one, at that. To evaluate your file is not to evaluate you. In order for me to come to any accurate conclusion on how you react in real life, I would have to accompany you on a mission."
Goran takes a deep breath, and hesitates, a twitch of an eye brow above his right...."You are not aware that my former military career is frought with files that were tossed out because we believed that files are written by those who have nothing better to do than write what their opinion of the situation is, rather than bring the true issue to light. Are we healthy? Can we function in normal atmosphere rather than run from a crowd? You suffered in an accident, and yes, I do believe that you feel guilty. However, it is not what I say that is important, but what you, and your heart, tell you."
Goran sat a little straghter, look at the man across the desk.
"Your earlier question about my family, My sister's name is T'nara, and I believe my nephew's name is Peter Horn, though, it may have been changed due to protection and safety issues."
He looked down at the desk, thinking about the time he thought he had lost them.
"You are now married, sir, and I truly wish you well in that regard, hoping that you never have to lose someone so close to you. My Wife was killed ten years before my son was killed, by the same people. I have lived a hellish life since then, and only wish to help people with their lives, instead of taking them. Security is out of the question, and so is covert ops. Counseling is the only thing that can be an option with me."
off: Hope this is better. Last time was a fluke, my mind was gone, getting over the flu and all.

Naois sat stunned as the words hit home, avoiding the Romulan's gaze altogether. "I am hostile because I have suffered interrogations," he admitted, "and I believed you were here to learn how to offer counsel. I had not expected you to admit to being able to torture and interrogate, which I am embarassed to admit has caught me off-guard."
He caught the Romulan's gaze and held it. "Recently I suffered a very traumatic experience. First, I was involved in a shuttlecrash, where my cadet lost her life after control over our shuttle was lost. The shuttle crashed into Resurrection and I was badly injured. Doctor Roquel, now my wife, cared for me and saved my life. Now, several weeks ago I suffered at the hands of a stalker. She had tried to kill me when I was injured..."
Naois broke off, wrenching his eyes shut even as colour drained from his face. "She shot me after I returned home from a duty shift aboard the Dark Phoenix, and she drugged me such that it appeared as though I was entering the pon farr. After that, the entire event is a blank and no amount of counseling has managed to bring that back to me. it is concluded that I will never remember but because of that my wife has suffered as well."
It was obvious that it was tough on him to talk about it. "So if I did appear hostile, you have my apologies." With a sigh, he stacked his PADDs together. "It is my belief that you are now ready to move on with your Starfleet career. The Dark Phoenix has just left spacedock, if you are quick you may catch up with her."
This time, he offered a small smile. "And I believe you may find a surprise of your own there, though that is not for me to disclose right now. Do please stop by when you return from your mission. Congratulations Ensign S'harien and good luck, if you believe in it."
OFF: yes your last post was much better. You may now report to USS Dark Phoenix as Chief Counselor.
