OFF: I've been told the DP mission has been abandoned, and a shore leave shall commence.
ON: Naois was happy; in fact he didn't think he could be any happier right now. Repairs on his station had gone well, there had been no incidents in training cadets this time, which was quite a welcome change in events, and most importantly, he had received news that the Dark Phoenix was coming home for shore leave.
He hadn't heard from Valeia in a few days and though he knew she could've been busy, he'd been a little disappointed as her messages had always been the highlight of his day. But now, with the Phoenix coming home, he'd make sure that she would come to him. Not that she wouldn't, they were after all married, and quite devoted.
But he wanted her homecoming to be special. Thus, after his shift he hurried home to his quarters and actually started what could be defined as a spring cleaning. By the time he was done, and that was well into the morning hours, his home was very clean and smelling of her favorite flowers.
The Vulcan smiled to himself, wiping strands of hair from his face. His tunic was wet from the efforts he'd gone through, even a little dusty. Shaking his head, he headed for his bathroom to get cleaned up. Now, the wait for the Phoenix would begin. And he didn't mind that he hadn't slept and would be back on duty in less than an hour....

They were home ...
It hadn't been an easy return. Several people, Brahms, and most of the crew themselves, were unhappy at their being ordered to leave. But the Aasimar issue was now being handled on a 'diplomatic' level ..
Brahms wasn't the diplomatic type, but was still smarting from being told, no matter 'how' it was worded, that the Dark Phoenix was being recalled .. It was a kick in the teeth to him personally .. Yes it was true that they had done all they could, they had their crew back, and Star Fleet Intelligence was now baby-sitting the Aasimar during the talks.
~~~~~~~~~~
It had taken two weeks for the Phoenix to 'limp' back to the Star base ... They had been hit by an Ion storm that was impossible to avoid, and despite all their precautions, the ship had received a substantial amount of damage, with almost seventy of the crew being injured in various degrees of severity. Cargo bay three had been converted into a Hospital for some of the more injured.
Warp was gone, and with the core damaged beyond any hope of repair, it had been jettisoned on the tenth day. Resurrection had offered to send out tugs, but the reaction from Commander Corval, not to mention Melanie's, made it clear that towing wasn't an option !
Most people had managed to get minimal sleep during the journey home, D'BrooNi had been in almost constant contact with Resurrection, ensuring there would be a new warp core waiting for them, and between Comm conversations, she had managed to be in at least four places at once overseeing the repairs.
Brahms was proud of this crew, and knew that when the time came for the Trinity to be commissioned, he'd be hard put to see any of them go.
As the ship was tractored into the massive space-dock, umbilicals and walk-ways were attached and Mel contacted the Bridge ..
=^= D'BrooNi to Bridge =^=
=^= Go ahead Melanie =^= Brahms said, watching the worker-bee shuttles begin their assessment of the hull.
=^= We're on external power Admiral .. Permission to go check on my new core ! =^=
=^= It's here Mel .. Have a coffee and get some rest first .. THAT is an order .. Bridge out =^=
K'nara waited for Brahms to finish his conversation before tapping her own Comm badge.
=^= Sick-bay .. Please begin transfer of injured personnel =^=
=^= Already on it Bridge =^= someone replied.
Brahms closed his eyes and almost sighed. It had been a hard, long mission, and a rest seemed more than welcome ..........
OOC: OK everyone, feel free to post on the shore leave thread for now ..
Please heed Commander Horns' request for Roll Call !
Brahms.
Between taking care of his family, his uncle and his duties, Peter was doing remarkably well for a change. He even found some time to indulge in holodeck training, to get back to his original strength. Even more surprising was that on occasion, K'Nara had joined him, and hadn't shown him every corner of the holodeck as she would when she was in a foul mood.
Everyone was tired, even Harley was complaining about lack of sleep, which was concerning since she was approximately five months pregnant. Surprisingly, his daughters didn't seem to share their parents' concern for sleep, they went about their daily routines, insofar they existed, and slept fitfully when put to bed.
Then, there was still the issue of dealing with Sheena, who was still locked up in the brig. Peter had held off talking to her, just listening to the reports of the counselor's conversation with her. In his opinion, she had gone crazy, though he strongly believed she could be healed in the long run. Despite their mutual disagreements, the Vulcan couldn't help but ratify that she was indeed a very good assistant. Even if she did try to frame him for this or that fairly frequently, and did put him in a bad light with the first officer. Not that he cared about the later.
Now, when the Phoenix finally limped into spacedock, a very tired security chief walked into the holding cell area, looking for his derranged assistant. "Sheena, you will be transferred to Resurrection shortly, where their security staff will take over custody. Is there anything you need?"
Sheena turned and spat at him. "From you?" she taunted. She looked pale and anxious, but her hatred hit him like a brick wall and he reeled. "I don't need anything from you, except your dead body."
"I fear that may take a while, as I do not intend on dying just yet," the security chief answered calmly. "You may page me if you change your mind."
~later~
Sheena walked between the two officers that were escorting her to the starbase, looking serene and calm though her mind was racing. No sooner had they rounded the corner that'd lead to the dock, or she sprang into motion, killing the guard on the left with one quick swipe of her hand, before grabbing his phaser and stunning the other. Toggling the setting to kill, she fired again, leaving the body smouldering.
She knew exactly where she wanted to go, but she needed to recompose herself for it to work. Minutes later, she arrived at the Horn quarters, where a little girl opened up. "Hello Seleya, may I come in?"
"Mother isn't home," the three year old replied, though she stepped back to let the woman in. "Lilah's crying and the nanny went home sick. Mother will be home in a few minutes."
"Why don't we play a little then," Sheena smiled. This was working out just perfect! "Let's play cowboys and indians." She walked over to the replicator and had it produce several lengths of sturdy rope, then tore a sheet up as well. "You're the indian and I've just captured you. Put your hands behind your back.."
A little frightened, the girl obeyed, unfamiliar with this particular game. She whimpered when her hands were securely bound together, but the whimper was silenced when she was gagged. "Sit," ordered Sheena, upon which she tied the girl's legs as well.
Next, she moved over to the pen where one-year old Lilah was playing with her doll. The toddler was too young to understand what was going on, but when her little hands were bound, she screamed at the top of her lungs in fright. A second later, she too was securely bound and gagged.
By then, Sheena had switched the phaser's setting back to heavy stun and aimed it at both girls. She'd have her wicked boss exactly where she wanted him soon enough, because she knew she couldn't hurt him physically. But she could by getting his family, and this was just perfect.
Harley never knew what hit her when she entered her home. She only saw her daughters lying bound on the deck, but when she wanted to go to them, something struck her in her lower back and she collapsed, unconscious before her body hit the floor.
Minutes later, Sheena had fled the Phoenix, leaving a badly injured Harley behind in the bathroom, securely hidden in the shower, while she took the two children and hid them, together with a strong explosive on Resurrection.
~back on the bridge~ Peter held on to his console as a sudden weakness washed over him. There was a haunted look in his eyes as his gaze found that of K'Nara but he was determined not to say anything. He put it to being exhausted and his dealings with Sheena that were traumatising at best, though still part of his job. "Lieutenant Evans is on her way to Resurrection," he reported, then suddenly fell silent as another report came in. "Her guards have been found dead near the airlock. No trace of Evans."
Goran was walking out of his room with his belongings when he felt a surge in his mind, a clear connection from his nephew.
He tried to remember where he had last seen his nephew, and took off at a dead run, making his way to the lifts to take it to the bridge.
=/\= S'harien to the bridge. Can I get a location of Lt Commander Horn.=/\=
As he waited for a reply, he got another surge, this one of anger, so much compelling anger, and it was not his nephew's nor his own. This anger almost dropped him to his knees.
=^=Aye sir=^= Mel groaned at being ordered to rest before getting to her new warp core. She turned round to see Charlie laughing at her.
“Oh shut up,” she shot back at the older man.
“Chief come on, the Captains right. We have literately done everything and anything in the last two weeks. We haven’t stopped. I didn’t even know I could function on the amount of sleep we have had. I mean we have barely seen anybody but the rest of the engineering staff,” Charlie told her. “We didn’t tell you this but we caught Tay sneak in 3 times.”
“Oh I will kill him,” Mel erupted.
“No no. Mel look he just missed his sister. Even Commander Horn’s not punished him or let you find out. The warp core can wait 24 hours Chief,” the older engineer reasoned. “Go see your family, friends. And get some rest or K’Nara’s going to come down here and hurt me. She made me promise to get you out of Engineering as soon as we hit Resurrection.”
Mel’s eyebrows flew up in surprise at that information. She admitted defeat. “No one starts the warp core..”
“Without you,” Charlie finished. “We wouldn’t dare.” He clapped her on the shoulder and started walking them both out of Engineering.”
Mel chuckled. “So what are you going to do then?” She asked her assistant chief.
“O’Malley’s bar. I have a friend to catch up with on Resurrection,” he informed her as they reached a junction in the corridors.
“Have fun,” Mel told him as they parted ways.
One lovely shower and escaping her Starfleet uniform for some civilian clothes Mel had all but started to relax, looking forward to when Ian would be off shift, when the door to her quarters swished open and Tay flew in. Nobu started barking happily as he jumped her into a big hug.
“Mel. I haven’t seen you for days. Is the ship fixed now?”
“All but the Core,” Mel told him ruffling his hair. “Where’s Mom?”
“Staff meeting at the school. She said I had to come straight to you,” he told her putting down his PADD that she could see homework on.
“Really, but the Captains ordered me to go for coffee,” the looked at each other for a second.
“Ice cream,” the two siblings said in unison.
“Okay,” Mel smiled grabbing Nobu’s lead. “Ten forward it is. One of their huge triple chocolate sundaes.”
“Mel, can we invite Seleya?” Tay asked.
Mel looked surprised again then chuckled.
“Well with you and Ian and Mom and Mr Horn all working all the time, sometimes Harleys minded me and well we are friends now,” Tay shrugged.
“You know what, I think that’s a great idea and as I haven’t seen my friend for too long, why don’t we invite Harley and Lilah as well,” Mel smiled as they went out the door.
“If we are lucky maybe Peter will come too,” Tay’s eyes flashed in admiration of the Security chief he held as his idol.
They walked down the corridor. “I don’t know. Have you been behaving yourself?” Mel asked. “You haven’t been sneaking around anywhere have you?”
She laughed inwardly as her brother went bright red.
“Look we’re here,” he smoothly changed the subject running up and pressing the chime for the Horn’s door. There was silence.
Tay pressed it again and again. Then looked at his sister wide eyed.
“Computer says Harley’s in there,” her brow creased as the panel she had accessed showed no sign of the girls.
“Something’s wrong.” Tay grabbed her arm.
=^=D’BrooNi to Harley Horn. We are outside your quarters. Can we come in?=^=
They were met with more silence.
=^=Harley are you okay?=^=
Nothing.
“Computer open door alpha, 77459, override Chief Engineer code D’BrooNi 7 Beta Lima 99F2,” Mel ordered starting to feel wary.
It opened and Tay ran in straight to the girls room.
Mel checked the lounge calling her friends name again. Nothing looked out of place.
“Not here,” Tay said appearing back. Nobu pulled forward and started barking.
“Find Harley boy,” Tay ordered the pup who was sniffing around. The Cairn pulled them towards the bathroom. Mel pressed the button to gain access and let go of Nobu immediately at what she saw.
“Harley, Harley talk to me . . .” she knelt down next to the human.
“She’s tied up Mel,” Tay pointed out as Mel was checking her pulse.
“Stunned. Tay get someone from sickbay down here NOW,” she raised her voice of Nobu’s continuing barking.
=^=D’BrooNi to Horn. Peter you need to get down to your quarters now=^=
Peter froze mid-stride, as he was on his way to S'harien, who just arrived on the bridge. The Romulan had an angry look on his face, though it was clear there was some confusion as to who the anger belonged to. As if on auto-pilot, his hand went to his combadge. "Horn here, I am on my way."
A concerned frown creased his brow as his and Goran's gazes met. "Admiral, permission to..."
"Granted," Brahms interrupted, waving him off.
Nodding in gratitude, Peter disappeared into the car Goran had just vacated. "Deck two," he ordered, then dashed off as the car delivered him to his destination. Goran, who had stepped back in with him, followed close on his heels. The Vulcan ignored his uncle's presence, focussed only on getting home as quick as possible.
"Mel!" he cried, as he entered his quarters, only to be nearly run over by Tay, who wrapped his arms around his waist, sobbing. In reflex, Peter wrapped his arms around the boy for a second, before disentangling him and transferring him to Goran. "Take care of him," he asked softly, before moving on.
A soft barking came from the bathroom, and Melanie's Cairn pup jumped at him as he entered. He gasped, then reeled in terror as he saw Harley lying on the floor of the shower, unconscious and tied up. "Brooks, report to my quarters," he managed, as he knelt down beside Melanie. He couldn't deal with this as chief, he was personally involved.
Gently, he turned Harley over and cut the bonds that held her wrists together. "Harley, wake up," he urged, fear audible in his voice. "Melanie, where are Seleya and Lilah?" His fear rose when he learned they hadn't been in his quarters, where he'd known they would've been home. He grabbed the chief engineer by the shoulders, more forcefully than he intended. "Where are my daughters," he asked again, before Goran stepped in and gently removed the Trill from his grasp.
"We'll find them," the Romulan promised, as he tapped his own combadge. "Sickbay, send someone down here. Preferably the chief medical officer. We've got injured."
ooc: Goran written with player permission. please don't rescue the girls or capture sheena just yet. note: sheena can't get killed, I've plans.
"Melanie, where are Seleya and Lilah?"
Mel tore her face from Harleys to Peters. "They were not in the quarters," she managed to choke out, a tear starting to run down her cheek.
Next thing she knew she was on her feet Peter roughly holding her shoulders. A look of pure fury and fear rolled into one on his face.
"Where are my daughters," he demanded louder, shaking her.
Mel swallowed, for one second frightened of Peter Horn but then she came to her senses. He was just as scared as she was. More so. If it were Tay she would be just the same.
"I don't know," Mel whispered before the new Counselor decided to intervene pulling Peter off her. It was a good job he did as Nobu was now growling and looking like he was going to go for Peters leg as he ordered Brooks to his quarters.
Pushing Tay to one side, she insisted he didn't move. "Nobu come here," Mel ordered as Peter was once more knelt by Harleys side. The Cairns ears perked up but he continued to growl at the Vulcanoid. Mel carefully grabbed his lead and pulled him towards her, just as he made a snap at Peters ankle.
Mel yelled at the pup in Trill as he continued to growl, teeth sank into Peters boots. Finally his ears perked up and he slowly backed away towards Mel, smaller growls at the Vulcanoid until Brooks appeared, in which he suddenly decided to start wagging his tail and tryed to go towards him.
"Oh no you don't," Mel said picking the pup up by his belly firmly as Tay moved round stroking him to try keep Nobu calm.
Nobu finally quietened, she handed him to Tay, more so to keep her brother occupied as Valeia arrived on the scene and Ian started asking what had happened.
Post by Dr. Valeia Roquel Mercy on Jun 20, 2008 7:56:59 GMT
Valeia was so excited. True, everyone seemed a bit thrown off about the mission ending so abruptly, but the Betazoid could have cared less about any of that. All that mattered was that she was going home. As soon as she’d heard they’d been called back, her spirits and her health had been completely revitalized. Gone was the nausea, weakness, dizziness…it was as if Doctor Mercy had never felt sick in the first place. Part of her was well aware of the fact that this sudden turn in well-being clearly meant she had been making herself physically ill missing Naois, but the doctor dismissed the thought as completely unimportant, especially now.
With renewed focus, the chief medical officer completely devoted herself to work, determined to complete all of the paperwork and other necessary tasks before the Phoenix arrived at Resurrection; that way she hoped to be able to be at the hatch when the connection to the station was made so she could immediately go and see her husband. Unfortunately, even the best laid plans deal with unforeseen glitches, and in this case, a sudden mini-epidemic of a nasty strain of Tarkalean flu hit among a small section of the crew. The resultant extra patients and scans and reports that this created kept Valeia far busier than she had initially intended, and as a result, Doctor Mercy had at least an hour or two more work to do as the ship pulled into the correct sector of space and headed towards her berth.
Determination to finish still fully in effect, Valeia sent a quick message off to Naois letting him know she would meet them in their quarters as soon as possible. If she could just get these last few things done, she could spend the rest of the shoreleave happily with her new husband without worrying about anything much waiting for her when she got back. That was the plan anyway. Commander Dexter was doing well and had been released a few hours earlier, the Aasimar rebel had been turned over long ago, and the last of the flu patients were recovering in their own quarters, the outbreak having been well contained. A few more reports and she would be completely free of her obligations and turn sickbay over to Sianna.
One more padd….she had one more report to read, sign, and file before she was finished, when the comm sounded informing the doctor of a medical emergency in Commander Horn’s quarters, one which she was ordered to attend to herself. In spite of her concern and caring for her patients, especially considering how close she was the chief nurse, Valeia bit back an angry retort informing the bearer of bad news that she was on leave and as such wasn’t going to be making any house calls. Instead, Doctor Mercy wearily replied that she was on her way.
Tossing the padd in her hand so hard that it knocked over several others on its way across the desk and onto the floor, the doctor grabbed her med kit and then stormed out of her office. In her mind, she was perfectly calm but in reality you could almost see a storm cloud forming above her head with each thundering step. Sianna didn’t ask where she was going, and none of the other nurses said a word to their clearly frustrated boss. Taping her commbadge as she headed to the turbolift, Valeia sighed. “Doctor Mercy to Captain Mercy, I’ve just got some sort of emergency call, but I hope it won’t take too long. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
Closing the channel without giving her husband a chance to reply, or comment on her clearly dour mood, the Betazoid entered the turbolift and requested the right deck. “It’s probably nothing…maybe the baby kicked. You’d think a nurse would be able to tell the difference between an emergency and a typical, normal pregnancy issue…” Valeia grumbled to herself, though she didn’t really mean any of that. If anything, just saying that out loud made her feel guilty and actually a little worried about the health of the baby and mother. This wasn’t like her to be so uncaring, critical, and downright mean…and even as the doors opened, her mood had shifted into its proper state, wanting to help and hoping all was well.
There were several officers gathered outside of the door when she arrived, only increasing the concern she was starting to feel rather vividly. Rushing to enter the quarters, Valeia picked up on the direction receiving the most attention and crossed the living room and bedroom to stop in horror in the doorway to the bathroom. Harley was sprawled out on the floor next to her kneeling husband, ropes that had clearly just been cut lying next to her. Sudden terrifying flashbacks of being tied up in the closet and Naois tied to the chair sprang unbidden into her mind, which along with the strong emotions of terror coming from Peter caused the Betazoid to waver on her feet for a second before snapping into her ‘doctor mode’ and dropping to her knees beside the unconscious, pregnant nurse.
Cutting out all the questions and comments flying around her, Doctor Mercy had her tricorder out in a flash and focused every ounce of attention on the device. The baby appeared to be completely fine and unphased, but Harley had suffered a pretty serious phaser burn, her blood pressure was unstable, and her heart rate was a tad lower than it should have been. “The baby’s fine, and Harley’s just been stunned, but I need to get her to sickbay to monitor her,” Valeia reported calmly to a clearly agitated Peter Horn, keeping any worry carefully out of her voice.
At that moment a small medical team arrived with a gurney, having decided to avoid riding in the same turbolift as their formerly irritated chief. As it was generally considered safer to avoid too many transports with a pregnancy, especially after a trauma, Valeia was grateful to see them and together they worked to cautiously get Harley up and out of the bathroom. On the way through the bedroom, trying to avoid the security officers milling about the quarters, the doctor tripped over something next to and half under the bed and was horrified to find Tundra there also unconscious. Kneeling once more next to the bed to check for a pulse, the Betazoid was relieved to find one and tried to lift the animal to discover the dog to be too heavy and cumbersome for her to carry by herself.
Holding up the team for a moment, the doctor had one of the security guards carefully lay the family pet at Harley’s feet where there was room. Even though Valeia wasn’t a vet by any means, she didn’t want to leave Tundra unmonitored. Everyone seemed thoroughly upset by what was going on, and Doctor Mercy didn’t see the two girls anywhere. Glancing around, not knowing whether Peter needed to be here or with his wife, the doctor stepped next to the distraught chief engineer and quietly asked, “Mel, what’s going on? What happened?”
As Mel
“Mel, what’s going on? What happened?” Valeia asked as her med team started to take Harley and Tundra out of the quarters and to sickbay.
"We called to see if Harley and the girls wanted to go for ice cream, except," Mel sniffed. "No girls and Harley was tied up unconscious in the bathroom."
Mel kept a tight hand on Tay's shoulders, who was still holding tightly onto Nobu as they walked after the gurney. She also tryed to keep an eye on Peter who despite the intial angry reaction now seemed to be in complete shock. He looked like he was just floating after the gurney. Goran was monitoring him closely too.
"Somebodies kidnapped the girls," Mel finally voiced what everyone had been thinking. "They are not onboard the ship. Ive run 5 complete scans. The only part vulcanoid on the ship is Peter."
Tay broke free, placed Nobu on the floor and thrusted his lead in Mel's hand as he caught up with his mentor and then slipped his tiny hand into Peters trying to offer some comfort. Mel considered calling him back but Peter didn't respond any which way. Tay thought he was helping and the counselor or Peter would be the first to order him away if he was in the way, she reasoned.
<Goran>
Behind them Ian was following talking on the comm. Clearly he needed to talk to Harley as soon as they got her conscious.
=^=Two young girls. I am transmitting pictures now. I need a stationwide search started immediatly and a list of all personel having already stepped foot on Ressurrection from the Phoenix. I also need all outbound traffic stopped immediatley=^=
Mel shot her boyfriend a look of support before turning back to Valeia.
"I guess you really didn't need this huh Doc? I mean Naois must be so excited to have you back. Im sorry, I mean none of us wanted this. I really hope their okay. There so young. Who ever did this is sick,"
<Valeia>
=^=WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T HAVE THE AUTHORITY=^= Ian practically bellowed at whoever he was speaking too. =^= Then find someone with the authority NOW.=^=
Mel exchanged a look with the doctor.
=^=Sir it needs to be a request from a command position. Either the Captain or XO can . . . .=^=
=^=Fine=^= Ian snapped and cut the communication as Mel moved to place a soothing hand on his arm. He looked like he was ready to punch the nearest wall. She sympathised, knowing just how irritating it was dealing with starbase personnel.
He stopped abruptly, took a deep breath and composed himself, then placed a hand cupping her cheek. "Keep an eye on Peter for me. I have to speak with the Captain or K'Nara."
She nodded as he pulled his hand away and ordered one of the other security men to stay with Harley at all times and to inform him as soon as she was conscious. A slight pang of sadness hit Mel, as it dawned on her that was probably the most she had seen of Brooks in the last 2 weeks and she hadn't even said a word to him.
As Brooks
Ian made his way to the bridge as quickly as possible, only just managing to not bump into a stunned Quinn Dexter as he came out the turbolift. He patted the Aasimer on the back briefly in apology as he rounded on the command seat. Around him, he could feel the eyes of the Kzinti officer and Sharon follow him curiously.
<Quinn, Sharon, Tak Science>
"Sir permission to speak with you in your ready room," Ian stated standing to attention as the Klingon officer looked him up and down. "Maam I think I need yourself too."
<Brahms>
Brooks followed them both into the readyroom and filled them in on what had happened.
Goran looked back at Mel and shook his head, forestalling her attempt to call Tay back to her.
"Normally I do not agree with children being in the middle of any stressful situation, but I agree with Tay being here, considering Commander Horn's reaction with him while we were in sickbay."
Goran motioned that he should follow. "I will send him back to you, should the need arise. And do not worry, I will ask the Doctor to keep you up to speed on how Harley is doing."
He did not wait for her to respond and walked close to Tay and Peter.
=/\=S'harien to Brahms, if you get a minute, I would like a word with you, in private, sir=/\=
He kept his voice low, hoping that if someone heard, it would only be Peter.
"Peter, we need to talk. You may bring Tay with you, if you so choose, but we need to talk before you go being rash. Come with me to my quarters, and we will figure out what to do."
He kept his voice in a calm manner, not letting any of his anger show through, so as not to frighten Tay nor to push Peter farther over the edge.
As though in trance, Peter rose to his feet once Harley was transferred to the gurney. To his horror, he found Tundra stunned as well, wondering how he had managed to forget all about his faithful pet. She'd never let anything happen to his wife and the girls, so it must've been someone she'd known. Known as in a Phoenix crewmember.
He watched as his pregnant wife was carried off, not hearing a word Brooks said to him. He only looked sideways when he felt someone take his hand, then smiled wistfully as he saw it was the boy, Tay. Remaining utterly silent, he allowed the boy his comforts. Someone else in close proximity caught his attention, and this time he did hear the words spoken.
"Rash?" he laughed suddenly, his voice rising in pitch as he spoke the word. "I am not rash. My wife is injured, my daughters abducted. How should I be rash? I do not know who got them, why they have been abducted or whether they still live." He pulled his hand roughly from the boy's grip, though he regretted that immediately when he saw the child's lip quiver in fear.
Peter wanted to reach out, but was unable to. "I want my daughters back, Uncle Goran, and I do not care how. I want them back, safe and sound and the person who did this behind bars. I cannot get involved, it will compromise security, and neither can you. But so help me whatever deity you pray to, if I do get my hands on the person, they will have me to answer to, and me alone."
Anger radiated from the Vulcan, but most of all terror. "Yes, we need to talk. Talk me out of revenge uncle. Help me rationalise." He turned and knelt before the boy, taking his hand in both of his. "Will you help me too? I am....scared."
"Will you help me too? I am....scared." Watching this turn in emotion, he smiled a little as Tay once again took Peter's hand, and the three of them went to his quarters.
Once they were in his room, he brought the man a cup of tea, and brought the boy a bit of water, and sipped his own tea and looked across to his very young nephew.
"Revenge is something that none of us can ever stoop to, but I have an idea. When your great uncle, my uncle, died, one of your cousins, who was also my cousin, pressured my aunt about the will. He almost died that day, and now I understand that anger does not rule this family."
He continued to stare at the two boys, and smiled. "If they cannot let you get involved, then fine, but I will say something and I am asking Tay to swear a vow of secrecy, as a security student under the tutelage of Commander Peter Horn, that he will not speak of this to anyone, unless it is to save our lives."
He stared directly into the trills eyes, and waited to get the nod. When he got it, he continued. "Start your own investigation. I will run diversions for you, if need be, and be right there by your side if I need to as well."
"Do you accept my help, nephew of mine?" The voice that issued from his throat was not that of the one Peter was familiar with, but with the full authority of a Romulan Praetor.
Marcus knew that he needed to get some rest, he wanted to move from the Command seat, but didn't seem to have the strength. He was well overdue, as was all the Phoenix crew, for a long, and quiet, shore leave. He knew it was going to take at least two weeks to repair the ship and make her space-worthy. he figured resting in his chair on the Bridge wasn't going to hinder anyone .. So he decided to keep his eyes closed for a few moments longer before heading to his quarters.
So he was a little surprised to find someone needing to speak to him urgently ..
"Sir .. Permission to speak with you in your ready room !" Ian said, standing to attention as the Klingon officer looked him up and down, "Ma'am .. I think I need yourself too."
Marcus focused his full attention on the man before him. Ian Brooks wasn't prone to dramatics .. So if he needed to speak to the Admiral, it was a certainty it was important.
"My ready-room Ian." Brahms said, getting up, "K'nara ...." he finished, heading from the Bridge.
Once in the privacy of Brahms' office, Ian told the Admiral what had happened .. Marcus waisted no time in enforcing the security measures that Ian had put into place, then spoke to Star base security ....
=^= I believe you have been informed of a situation on the Dark Phoenix =^= he began, politely.
=^= Yes Admiral .. But I can hardly hold shi ...... =^=
=^= Listen to me ...... I am 'ORDERING' you to cease all departures and arrivals from this moment on ! .. Do you understand me .. Have any ship's hard-docked searched immediately .. Any vessels in parking stations need to be told that if they attempt to leave the Star base they will be tractored into a secure dock .. If those two girls have already left the base ...... =^= Brahms said, a dark threat in his voice.
=^= Sir .. I'm not too sur ...... =^=
=^= What's your name ? =^= Brahms asked, hoping his voice was disguising the worry he was feeling.
=^= Lieutenant J'nor Admiral =^=
=^= OK Lieutenant J'nor ...... There are two young girls missing .. One is just a year old .. So .. Please follow my instructions to the letter .. There will be no recriminations I assure you =^=
=^= I've already begun Sir .. I've also taken all transporters offline until ordered otherwise .. We'll find those two girls Sir =^=
=^= Set up a two hundred thousand kilometer exclusion zone around Resurrection .. Nothing .. And I DO mean nothing .. Gets near us =^=
=^= Aye Admiral .. I will need confirmation from Admiral O'Shasserra at some point ...... =^=
=^= You will get it OK .. Brahms out =^=
"There is no doubt that Seleya and Lilah are still on the Phoenix ?" Brahms asked Ian.
"No Admiral, I don't think so." Ian said, totally frustrated, "We're running a bio-scan of the ship, but that's not going to be conclusive, considering all the damage, and a lack of one hundred percent system reliability at the moment."
Marcus rubbed his temples, trying hopelessly, to ward off the onset of a massive headache ... 'Not that that is going to work' he thought to himself.
"We need to find those children !" he said, looking from K'nara to Ian ..........
Peter shook his head in disbelief, even though he was very ready to accept the help. "No," he said hoarsely, "no I cannot do that. You run your quiet investigation and we will not tell but I cannot in good conscience do this and endanger the lives of my daughters. Harley would never forgive me."
He sat up a little straighter though his eyes still flashed dangerously. "I cannot guarantee the safety of whoever abducted the girls," he growled, "but I shall see to it that he will be brought to justice. That is what Harley would want, and it is what would be honourable. I would have no honour, if I were to involve myself. I am duty bound not to interfere."
Peter rose to his feet, patted Tay on the shoulder, then took Goran's hand. "But I thank you for offering. For now, however I cannot accept it." He sighed. "I need to get to sickbay first and then I will speak to starbase security about the matter. Please look after young Tay while I am gone. Melanie would appreciate it."
Minutes later, and still feeling horrible, Peter walked into sickbay, looking drawn and terrified. "How is she?" he asked, as soon as he approached the bed and Valeia. Leaning over, he caressed Harley's cheek and felt her stir under his touch. "And how is the baby?"
He straightened as he listened to the doctor's explanation and nodded where appropriate. "I will return later, there is something I need to take care of on Resurrection." He kissed his wife gently, before walking out of sickbay. For a moment, he debated going to Naois, but he felt he shouldn't trouble his friend just yet. He'd talk with base security first.
Confident he'd get them to help, Peter set foot on Resurrection and started out for the security chief's office. Lieutenant Commander Stance Crusader would surely listen to reason once he'd explained what was going on. He was halfway to the commander's office when he was suddenly grabbed from behind, his strong arm painfully twisted up behind his back while a knife was held at his throat.
The Vulcan knew better than to struggle, as it'd only cause him more pain and he'd risk getting his throat slit. Instead, he remained absolutely still, breathing heavily but carefully. The pressure on his throat increased slightly and he leaned back to get away from the blade. "What do you want?" he asked.
"I want you to listen carefully," a female's voice whispered at him, as he was pulled backwards, forced to walk along with his captor as his only guide. "Your daughters are safe for now, but if you don't get your watchdogs off my back, they'll be killed. I've got an explosive rigged and if I'm so much as incapacitated, the explosive will go off. Understand?"
Peter nodded carefully, seething inside as he recognised the voice. "Don't try to follow me, if you value the safety of your children or your own. I'd love to kill you right here, but that'd draw attention I don't want. I want a shuttle and safe passage out of here. When I am gone, I'll let you know where your children are."
He felt the pressure ease off his throat, but he wasn't prepared for the forceful shove towards the opposite wall. He crashed full into it and by the time he was recovered enough to get up and turn, his assailant was gone. Breathing hard, he tapped his combadge. "Captain Mercy, the abductor of my children is on your base. Kindly make sure she is detained, but be aware she has an explosive rigged. Do not fire any weapons at her."
He tapped his combadge again. "Admiral Brahms, the abductor is Sheena. She just threatened to kill my daughters." His voice was cold and hard as he spoke, and overcontrolled. "She has made her demands. I will be in sickbay with my wife, if I am needed."
=^= Admiral Brahms .. The abductor is Sheena .. She just threatened to kill my daughters .. She is now on Resurrection and has made her demands .. I am returning to the Phoenix and will be in sickbay with my wife .. If I am needed =^=
Brahms could hear the anguish in the Vulcan's voice.
=^= I'm sending K'nara over to the Star base now Peter .. Admiral O'Shasserra has agreed to have her run the search teams .. We will get her =^=
There was no reply from the Chief Tactical Security Officer, and Brahms sympathized with him.
"Get over there, both of you ... Find that woman and get those children back to their parents."
Both Officers nodded then left the ready room. Brahms hadn't failed to see the look on his Executive Officers' face as she turned to leave. She would do everything in her power to get Seleya and Lilah back .. As to that fate of their abductor, he just hoped that someone reached her before the Klingon ..........
A week earlier:
Sharon was at the helm as they departed the Assimar homeworld, Sharon was still not happy about her and Mel being nabbed because of their friendship with Quinn. She was worried about him, they had not spent alot of time since he was back to health.
They sped thru space and things were quiet, when the ship all of a sudden dropped out of warp, when they dropped out of warp, it was pbviious why, they were bounced around unmercifully as a ion storm attacked, Sharon did her best to pilot the ship as the Admiral was barking orders, her console started making funny sounds and she dove for the floor just as it blew.
She got up as the internals put the fire out but the console was dead, she got underneath the console and tore open the back, after a few shocks she managed to get the console back to life after some cross wiring. The ship slowly made its way out of the storm but from listening to what was going on behind her she knew the ship had been crippled.
Current time:
Sharon was tired, and hungry, she had remained on the bridge doing whatever she could to keep the ship from flying into something, she was worried that they may never make it when they finally reached Ressurection. Sharon relaxed her shoulders that were tighter then a rubber band as the ship took its position. Sharon sat back and stretched and took a deep breath, then Ian appeared on the bridge which was quite odd, she looked at him as well as everyone else.
The Admiral and exec went into the Captain's ready room with Ian, something was not right, she was about to power down her board when it died, least it held together until they reached the base. Sharon got up and walked over to Quinn and smiled up at him.
"We have not spent much time together since we left your homeworld, I hope we could have dinner together tonight." Sharon said.
"Get over there, both of you ... Find that woman and get those children back to their parents."
"Yes Captain," K'Nara said nodding at Ian to follow her.
On the walk to the starbase's main security she quizzed Ian Brooks. "Tell me, this Sheena. Aside from being rather headstrung and irritating to the point where I really had to fight the urge to knock her out along with the rebel Aasimer, how resourceful is she?"
"Very Maam and she has a huge chip on her shoulder regarding the chief," Ian responded.
"I am aware. Yet she is not very honorable in her actions," K'Nara noted.
"Certainly not at the moment," Ian conceeded to the Klingon.
"She will know all the tricks to evade," K'Nara noted.
"Yes Maam," Ian nodded as they walked into the main security area. They walked past several people in security uniform and K'Nara to her suprise noticed another Klingon. She kurtly nodded at him.
"Who is in charge?" she demanded to the group.
"Lieutenant Commander Stance crusader," one of the human responded. "But she is busy right now. She will not see you."
He knew as soon as his Klingon colleague started laughing that was the wrong thing to say to the Klingon women. K'Nara merely shot him a death glare and walked forward to the Station CSO office.
K'Nara pressed the chime once, Brooks was wise enough to step far enough to her side as she roughly and predictably in his view, threw the man who stepped forward and informed her the same thing the previous one had straight out the door. He stumbled to the floor dazed as she calmly walked in to the confusion of the woman sitting behind the desk.
"Stance crusader?" she asked as Ian followed knowing the rest of the men, once the laughter had died down at seeing their comrade, were also behind him.
"You can't just barge in . . . . . ."
"Are you in charge?" K'Nara cut her off roughly.
"You just threw one of my men," the chief spluttered placing a mug of coffee down on the desk.
"Clearly the training of your men is not up to scratch if they can't take a simple shove from a Klingon female," K'Nara shot at her. "He's not even got up again yet."
"How dare you? One of you," she turned to the men crowding behind Brooks, "Get her out of this office now."
"Negative Lieutenant," K'Nara merely sighed. "As much as I would like to provide a demonstration to further back up my previous statement, which believe me I will if anyone of you trys to remove me from this office, there are two younglings missing on your station."
"The Horns," Stance replied still glaring daggers at K'Nara. "We are aware and we are doing everything in our power . . . ."
"There are 5 officers stood behind me right now doing nothing," K'Nara demanded.
Stance opened her mouth once or twice like a fish, realising she could not argue with that as much as she would like too.
"Maam," Brooks whispered. "This may not be the best strategy for cooperation."
It earned him another death stare from the XO. Brooks decided to step back and shepherded out the remaining men. The door to the office swished shut.
"She always like that?" one of the men asked him.
"Thats a good day," Ian replied sighing.
"You do not come into my office and tell me how to delegate my staff," Stance said loudly.
"I outrank you Lieutenant and have been ordered to oversee the retrieval of these two little girls," K'Nara retorted.Now tell me what are you doing?"
Ian paced outside as K'Nara spoke further with the chief. There was no further yelling which he took as a good sign. The other Klingon moved towards him.
"Tell me human. Which house is she?"
"Corval," he replied. The Klingon male nodded but said no more. There was however a strange look on his face briefly.
"Could we get a list of all unoccupied quarters and floor plans for all the jeffries tubes in the station?" Ian asked. "The stations on lockdown for all incoming and outgoing traffic so the abductor is not getting out but she has those kids somewhere."
There was a loud crash from the security office. All the men outside looked at each other. A long moment passed by and the door opened once more.
Stance Crusader walked out first a large coffee stain down her uniform.
"Gentlemen, this is Commander Corval. She will be heading the search for the Horns !"
After his meeting with Peter, he knew almost with a certainty that it was Sheena that had taken his grand-nieces. He was angry, and this time he had no inclination to just put those emotions to the side. He grabbed his things, and garbed himself in civilian clothing.
He moved out of his room, and went to the lifts, going for the airlock that would let him on the base.
As soon as he was on the base, he made one call, to a recording of Peter's.
"My nephew, I understand your hesitation, being raised within Federation Space and having those Laws drilled into your head. Your mother would be proud, as am I of all that you have become. Unfortunately for the woman who has harmed my family, I was not brought up in Federation Space, nor were it's Laws drilled into me from birth. I am a Romulan first, and a Starfleet officer second in this instance. Do not try to disuade me, but rest assured, Sheena will not be killed. I will even make it my word bound by blood that your children will be safe. Your Uncle, Goran Talnak Rhian S'harien."
When he was done, he made his way away from the communicators, and towards the security station. He kept himself hidden when he noticed K'nara Corval and another Phoenix member mover through the promenade towards the securtiy station as well.
He watched K'nara storm into the office and then heard all the yelling.
Ian paced outside as K'Nara spoke further with the chief. There was no further yelling which he took as a good sign. The other Klingon moved towards him.
"Tell me human. Which house is she?"
"Corval," he replied. The Klingon male nodded but said no more. There was however a strange look on his face briefly.
Stance Crusader walked out first a large coffee stain down her uniform.
Goran shook his head and knew he was going to have a harder time getting close to Sheena, and he knew he wasn't going to like any confrontation with K'nara, although.....
He shook that emotion from himself, and decided then and there. He moved out of the shadows and made himself seen to K'nara, the other klingons, and Ian.
K'Nara snarled as the Romulan made himself know, wearing particually distasteful clothing. She smelt the alien before he actually appeared.
Narrowing her eyes at the being, Ian shot a worried look as the male Klingon stepped forward and started yelling in Klingon at the Counselor.
"bIHnuch. Ha'DIbaH,"
He made a step forward but K'Nara placed a hand firmly on his chest stopping him and murmured something low in Klingonese, too fast for the translator. The male Klingon's eyes widened as he shrugged off her hand and he squared up to K'Nara.
More rapid Klingonese passed back and forth between them as all the other security men and the romulan, surrounding the table exchanged looks of confusion and wonder if they were going to end up in a fist fight. Finally the male Klingon stepped back again and K'Nara spoke in standard once more.
"You are in the wrong department counselor but as you are here, assign yourself to team Delta," she snapped. The Male Klingon leader of team Delta smirked, looking slightly happier than he had a moment ago.
"Oh and someone get him some better attire," she snapped turning back to the display of empty quarters infront of them.
"Team Delta will search this quadrant," she pointed glaring at the Romulan to make sure he was listening.
One of the human officers thrust a dark jumpsuit identical to what they were all wearing into Goran's hands as K'Nara paced. She glared at him once more until he finally took his civilian jacket off and started pulling it on stunned she had not put up a fight to let him join in the hunt.
"I reiterate, I want Sheena Evans alive. She is security trained and will no doubt think outside the box, so use whatever means necessary to capture her, but I want her alive and brought to me as soon as she is found. Get the girls beamed to the starbase infirmary and have Peter and Harley Horn and Commordore Brahms onboard the Phoenix informed immediatly. Lets move out,"
Meanwhile on Resurrection:
Sheena ran as fast as she could; she knew this starbase as well as the Phoenix, she'd made sure of that before she sprang her plan in motion. She would have her revenge on her boss, for all the times he had embarassed her right in front of the commanding officer and the first officer. And for marrying the harlot nurse when he had belonged to her.
She didn't know what she hated him for the most; embarassing her, or leaving her. She didn't quite remember the whole scenario on why he didn't end up with her, but she knew she hated him.
And now, she had his precious offspring. As she entered the vacant quarters, she glanced down on her charges. The oldest girl cast up frightened eyes to her as she whimpered softly against the gag. Her hands were terribly sore from being bound behind her back and she had no feeling in her feet.
The littlest one was unusually quiet but Sheena preferred it this way; there was no fuss and she could go about her business. She did feed them from time to time but now wasn't such a time, and she had things to do.
"Be quiet, and you'll be with your parents soon enough," she promised, demanding that Seleya nodded she had heard. She nodded, put on her sweetest smile, though still laced with malice, then left the quarters again. She needed to find a safer place soon, she couldn't stay in the quarters.
However she had her own quarters on SBR, where she headed to pick up a few new tools she could use to extort Peter Horn with. She knew her action on drawing first blood on him, when she'd held the blade at his throat and twisted his arm, would've angered him. And she knew he'd come after her sooner or later, which was what she wanted. Then, in a duel, she would finally be victorious and revenge would be hers.
Joint post between Horn and Mel
As Brooks . . .
Ian signalled for the 19th time for one of his men in team beta to get in position as he used the device the chief engineer of the starbase had given him to unlock the doors to quarters. He immediatly pointed his gun from his height as the other man knelt and had a low shot. Seeing nothing moving he put the lights on as he had the other times and they scouted the quarters. Nothing again.
"I wish we could calibrate the stations sensors quicker, " he mumbled as they moved on to the next one and repeated the action. This time he did a double take in the bedroom. He had seen something poking out from under the bed. Signally to two of the boys in the team, they literally threw the bed to the otherside of the room as Ian breathed a sigh of relief. Seleya was conscious and staring at him terrified. He bent down to untie her. "It's okay sweetheart. Your safe now."
Seleya screamed in agony as blood rushed back into her hands and feet, causing them to sting like pins and needles. One of the security officers knelt next to Lilah and untied her as well. "Sir, this one's awfully quiet. I'd expect her to scream too." He picked up the infant's inert body and held her close to him. "She's breathing, but shallowly.'
Meanwhile, Seleya held up her arms to Ian. "I want my daddy," she whimpered, "and my mommy."
Ian scooped her up as she started sobbing and hit his communicator. =^=Brooks to Corval. We have the kids. No sign of Sheena. I'm moving them to sickbay now.=^=
He brushed a strand of the 3 year olds hair back and whispered, "We are going to beam to sickbay now sweetheart and I will get your daddy as soon as we are there. Is that okay?"
Seleya nodded, though she was still shaking all over and sobbing uncontrolleably. She had no idea what this beaming was Ian was speaking of, but she knew she could trust this man as she'd seen him with daddy often enough.
She clung to him in fear, as though she never wanted to let go again.
Ian felt the toddler grip his shoulders harder. "It's just going to tingle slightly," he tried to reassure her as he nodded at the man holding Lilah. She did not look right, he mentally agreed with his assessment. They stepped closer together as K'Nara acknowledged his earlier communication and Ian ordered one of the transporter rooms to beam them. They appeared in sickbay and several medical staff came running at once. Ian placed Seleya down on a biobed but kept hold of her hand as he delievered some good news to Peter Horn.
=^=Brooks to Horn. We have found your daughters and are in the starbases infirmary. Seleya's asking for you both=^=
Peter had just reached his wife's bedside, noting with not a little sadness that she was still unconscious. He slipped her hand into his and squeezed it tightly just as Ian's message came through. He nearly fainted in relief. "Thank you Ian, I will be right there. Harley is still unconscious." He nodded to Valeia in thanks, then sped out to the nearest transporter room, to be beamed straight to SBR's sickbay. He scooped up his oldest daughter as soon as he was allowed to and held her close, not caring that he was actually weeping in relief to hold his daughter safe and sound. "Where is Lilah?" he then asked, noticing that Brooks had not mentioned her.
Ian pointed to another biobed, surrounded by medic's. "I don't know what's wrong sir, we got her here as soon as we found them. There was no sign of Sheena," he added pre-empting his bosses next query.
Peter ground his teeth in fury as he watched his youngest child being cared for by the medics. He placed Seleya back on the bed and enticed one of the officers to stay with her while he hurried over to the other bed. The medics were running to and fro and an oversized respirator was placed on her tiny face. "I will kill her," he growled, "for that alone, I will kill her with my bare hands. Will she be all right?"
The nurse nodded, before waving the angry father off, surprised at how much anger a Vulcan was capable of displaying. Peter walked back to Ian, picking up Seleya again. "She has crossed the limits. For hurting Lilah, I will kill her," he vowed, eyes flashing in fury. "That woman is incorrigible, and she has gone too far."
Ian nodded at Peter, really hoping he calmed down before actually killing anyone. It would not do to have the family reunited and then him put in the brig for murder. He could not think of a suitable response and feared angering the vulcanoid further if he tryed. "Sir with permission I will go rejoin K'Nara in the search for Sheena. One of the others will conduct the interviews when you feel Seleya is up for it."
"She is too young," Peter countered, "she would not understand. I will not allow her to be interviewed. Go join the search, I will stay here with my daughters, until Lilah is well enough to be transported to the Phoenix."
"Aye Sir," Ian said as he turned to walk out. He then remembered to contact the Admiral.
Goran nodded, and looked at the klingon commanding Delta. "I would advise you to make no move against me, considering many things, one of which is that I served under K'nara's father as a subcommander. Another thing as well, if anything should happen to me, the Horn's might not take too much liking to such a thing."
He stood at his full height, looking directly into the eyes of the Klingon.
"And you would also be advised to use my talents, instead of keeping me in the rear with the gear. I did not always do counceling. I was a Prefect and a Praetor, and an interrogator for Romulan military. Use me as a weapon, don't work against me, Commander."
Goran made to turn to put on the suit.
Post by Dr. Valeia Roquel Mercy on Jun 24, 2008 4:44:52 GMT
"I guess you really didn't need this huh Doc? I mean Naois must be so excited to have you back. I’m sorry; I mean none of us wanted this. I really hope their okay. There so young. Who ever did this is sick," Mel commented, and Valeia nodded.
“I hope they’re alright too. I don’t understand how anyone could do something like this…” Valeia replied, ignoring mention of Naois. She still wanted to be with him, but knowing what was going on, the doctor was trying not to think about that right now. Harley was hurt and two little girls were out there somewhere…
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T HAVE THE AUTHORITY?!” Lieutenant Brooks shouted over the comm, startling Valeia out of her thoughts and causing her to jump slightly. “Then find someone with the authority NOW.”
Exchanging a look with Mel, before moving to accompany the medical team with Harley, keeping an eye on both the nurse and the family pet, making sure their vitals signs remained within acceptable ranges. Valeia could do nothing about the kidnapping, but she would at least make sure that Harley and Tundra would be alright once the girls were found…they had to be found…
After arriving in sickbay, it didn’t take long for Nurse Horn’s blood pressure and heart rate to stabilize, although she remained unconscious due to the stress of the stun. Luckily, the baby was completely unharmed. Tundra was just stunned as well, though the burn was more severe given the level of the beam was designed for humans, not dogs. Fortunately, no serious injuries seemed to have resulted.
Within a few minutes, both were stable and resting comfortably, and it was then that Commander Horn entered sickbay. "How is she?" he asked, approaching the bed where his wife lay, real fear and deep concern in his eyes as he reached out and touched Harley’s face. "And how is the baby?"
“She’s resting now, and she and the baby will be just fine. Her vital signs have completely stabilized, and the baby was unaffected by the stun. The burn has been healed, and no further damage has been done. Tundra will be fine too,” Valeia reported, trying to smile encouragingly at the distressed security officer. Her attempt at comfort didn’t seem to help, as he still looked understandably terrified.
"I will return later; there is something I need to take care of on Resurrection,” Peter said quietly, leaning over to kiss his wife before turning and walking out of sickbay. Sighing sadly, Valeia activated another more in depth prenatal scan, figuring that while Harley was here, it was a good time to check the baby more closely, not for damage from the shot but for any number of possible natural complications or conditions. Fortunately, the doctor found nothing wrong. The child was entirely healthy and developing normally. In fact, the sex of the baby was now clear, but that would not be told unless requested, and obviously now wasn’t a good time.
A short while later, Commander Horn reentered sickbay and moved to his wife’s side. Since there were no changes to report, Valeia stayed across the room to give him some privacy with his wife. The newly married doctor could very much understand how upsetting and difficult it must have been for him to see her like that.
Even from the other side of sickbay, the comm call could be heard loud and clear, as everyone went quiet, and a dead silence descended on the room. You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief as Ian reported that both girls had been found, but the well trained medical staff picked up on the lack of information on the condition of the children. A few nervous glances were exchanged as Peter, with a nod in Valeia’s general direction, took off like a shot for the exit. His enthusiasm for his daughters’ welfare elicited a few small smiles, but nerves were still high.
As everyone went back to their duties, nervously restocking or checking readings, it was clear everyone’s mind was in another sickbay. Valeia, unlike everyone else, had an in on Resurrection, and as such there was no way she was going to sit back without knowing what was going on. The girls were after all under her jurisdiction so to speak. Tapping her commbadge, Valeia realized there was no way to know if Donolly was on duty or not, but it was worth a try. “Doctor Mercy to Doctor Donolly, I don’t know if you’re in sickbay or not, but you just received two patients who are...honorary members of the Phoenix’s crew, and I was hoping you could check on them for me, or if you’re already there just let me know how they’re doing. They’re the daughters of one of my nurses, and we’re all worried...”
OFF: a JP between myself and Commander Peter Horn
ON: "Antoine here. I'm on it sweetheart, I've just examined both girls and they'll be fine." The old medic glanced at the infant on the biobed, a worried frown crossing his face. She was still having trouble breathing though at least her colour was no longer off. "And I've got their father right here. Seleya's all right and looks to be returning to her happier self, but I am a little worried about Lilah. Did you diagnose anything recently that may help me treat her?"
Donolly crossed the little space that separated him from the girls' father. "Mr Horn, was your daughter ill recently?"
Peter nodded sadly. "She had a mild case of influenza, she had been feverish, but nothing that could cause this." He handed Seleya over to one of the nurses, who made a little play out of the next examination. "I want to see her."
"I'm not sure if tha-"
"Now."
Donolly nodded. "Very well, come with me." He led the stricken Vulcan father to his youngest child, who was still unconscious, but breathing easier. "She'll get better," he promised, touching the young man's arm in an attempt to be of comfort.
"Where is Naois?" Peter suddenly asked.
"Probably on the holodeck, training one cadet or the other," Donolly replied casually, "he's kept busy these days. I just wish he wouldn't injure himself so often, I'm having a hard time refraining from informing his wife. He's getting a little obsessed and careless, in my opinion. You'll see him about this later?"
Peter nodded. "He needs to be informed. Preferably by myself even though I am keeping myself from the investigation, however hard it is for me." He leaned over his daughter, gently caressing her cheek, then resting two fingers on her tiny face. "Lilah," he whispered, repeating her name a few times. "Wake up," he whispered, cradling his child once Donolly had given permission.
The child stirred, but did not wake though she whimpered softly. A smile spread across the Vulcan's face, as relief washed over him. "May I take them to the Phoenix?" he asked. "Their mother was shot and is in sickbay. Their presence will aid her recovery."
Worry crossed his face again. "She is pregnant."
Donolly nodded quietly. "Take them, there is nothing I can do for them that Valeia can't do. And she had good teachers, she'll do fine, I promise." He beckoned the nurse who deposited Seleya back into her father's arms, then aided him in holding his youngest child to him as well. "OPS, transport Mr Horn and his daughters directly to sickbay on the USS Dark Phoenix. Post haste."
The old man watched as the security chief and the two children shimmered from view. "Valeia, they are on their way to you. I've got to seek out Naois, he'll want to be informed. Do you want me to pass on a message? I don't think he saw any yet, he's been very busy."
Brahms sat in his ready room, unconsciously drumming his fingers on the desk as he waited for news.
It was certain that he would much prefer a stand-off between the Phoenix and a fleet of enemy vessels, than have to face the fact that two children were missing ..
=^= Brooks to Admiral Brahms =^=
The Comm made Marcus jump.
=^= Go ahead =^=
=^= Sir .. We have the girls .. They are being beamed to the ships Sick-bay now =^=
Brahms' eyes closed for a few seconds as relief spread through every sinew and fibre of his body.
=^= Do you have Evans ! =^=
=^= No .. Not yet Admiral .. But we're narrowing the search .. There's not many places she can hide now .. Matter of time Sir =^=
=^= Do Peter and Harley know we have the children ? =^= Brahms said, already entering the turbo-lift heading to Sick-bay.
=^= Yes Sir .. They should be there by now .. We contacted them first =^=
=^= Good .. Keep me informed Mister Brooks .. Good work =^=
Brahms closed the Comm and sighed, relaxing slightly now the children were safe.
"Please state a destination." the ships' computer said patiently.
"Deck Three." Brahms ordered ..........
Seconds later, a bewildered but visibly relieved looking chief security officer materialised into sickbay. Seleya clung to him, crying softly against his shoulder as her father handed her baby sister to one of the nurses present, who in turn hurried towards the chief medical officer.
"Doctor Donolly, we have arrived safely, thank you for your care," Peter acknowledged the doctor, before switching channels. "Brooks, as soon as you find Sheena, I require to be informed. I wish to...confront her regarding the abduction of my daughters and injuring my wife. She can count herself lucky that my unborn child suffered no damage."
As soon as his communiqué was done, he carried Seleya over to her mother. "Harley, please wake up," Peter whispered, holding his wife's hand while their daughter curled up beside her and instantly fell asleep. "The girls are safe, Ian rescued them and they are after Sheena now."
Harley stirred and Peter's heart skipped a beat in joy when she opened her eyes. "Peter..." she whispered, reaching up to touch his face.
He held her hand to his face, smiling down at her in joy and relief. "I am here my love," he whispered back, "I am not leaving you, I am right here. Lilah is being cared for, Seleya is here too." He guided her other hand to the girl's sleeping form and Harley's hand curved around her daughter's shoulder, pulling her to her.
"What happened?" Harley struggled to sit up but Peter held her down gently.
"You were shot," he answered, his expression turning grim, his eyes darkening in fury. "But we are chasing her as we speak, she has nowhere to go." His expression softened as he held her hand. "Rest now, you will be fine. Doctor Mercy will make certain of that." He looked up as Valeia approached. "How is Lilah? What is wrong with her?"
Quinn seemed to ignore her, she felt like, What did I do now? She wanted to ask him but he just kept on working.
"Ok, have it your way, want to ignore me and act like I'm not here, fine. I wont bother you anymore." Sharon said.
Sharon would not let heim see her cry and turned and headed to the turbolift, she took it down to her quarters. She checked on boots who was asleep on the couch when she entered, Sharon had tears going down her face, she wanted to scream but decided he was not worth it then her comp beeped. She picked boots up and headed to her comp, she had a incomming message from the base. She wiped at her face when her mom and dad appeared.
"Hey hun, we were in the neighborhood thought you might like to join us on the station." Rise said.
"Sure, I would love to mom, let me get cleaned up and changed, I will meet you both in the promenade." Sharon said.
"You ok? You look like you have been crying." Mike asked.
"Long story, I will tell you when I see you." Sharon said.
"Ok see you soon." They both said and the communication was cut.
Sharon took boots into her bedroom and laid him on the bed, she undressed and took a shower. When the hot shower was finished she felt better, and changed into her civillian clothes, she was about to leave when her door chime rang, she went to the door and it opened, the person she least expected to see standing there was Quinn.
Naois walked up to Lieutenant Davison, as she prepared to head for the Dark Phoenix. He had changed into a clean and dry uniform, and had actually taken the time for some proper grooming. "Lieutenant, may I accompany you?" he asked, as he finally caught up.
The Vulcan fell in step beside the young marine, easily keeping up with her strides. "My bondmate serves on the Phoenix," he explained, "we were supposed to meet up but your training came first and only just now I heard there was a medical emergency, so I am going to see if I can help."
His expression was completely serious. "As you rememer, I am a trained counselor, and one of the victims is one of my closest friends."
Together, they walked to the Nova class vessel, where they received permission to board. "Good luck on your new assignment, lieutenant," he offered, before they parted ways. He headed straight for sickbay, ignoring the ensign who offered to show him the way altogether by striding right past her.
He found his wife busy in her office and a slight smile appeared on his face as he observed her for a few minutes. He beckoned one of the nurses who was about to walk in then requisitioned her PADD. "Doctor Mercy, here is the report you asked for," he said quietly, as he walked up to her from behind. He had to restrain himself, so much did he want to just hold her to him, comfort her and love her.
His smile widened as she turned to him, holding out her hand expectantly. He gave her the PADD, but he didn't release her hand. "I have missed you," he whispered to her, "I hope my training sessions did not give you too much stress?" Naois prayed she hadn't noticed his slight limp, which he would suffer for a few more hours until the curare would've completely left his system. He was also still a little pale from his near-drowning experience, but not as much as before.
"I need a favour," he said earnestly, as they sat down after a few minutes of hugging and kissing. "It is very personal, and I do not wish for Donolly or Rampton to find out." He hesitated, a little embarassed. "I nearly drowned on the holodeck earlier," he confessed, "Rampton of course could not have known. However, I never learned how to swim...and I would like to learn. I am fine in the shallows, and I like water, but my parents never taught me how to swim."
"Antoine here, I'm on it sweetheart, I've just examined both girls and they'll be fine,” the report came back, causing an immense sigh of relief to be heard once more throughout sickbay. Medical personnel were often compassionate and very protective towards their patients against those who would do them harm, even more so with children. But when something or someone dared to threaten a part of their own close knit medical family, it became much more serious. Everyone in that sickbay knew Harley and many of them considered her to be a close friend, so for her two little girls, both born in this very sickbay, to be in danger, this was far from just another case and they were far from just patients; this was personal.
Even Valeia who had been a part of this family for such a short time felt the deep concern, both from her own feelings and from the powerful emotions of her staff. Crossing the room to the nurse’s side, Doctor Mercy checked the readings, still unchanged, and smoothed the blanket before patting Harley’s hand. “They’re safe and going to be just fine,” she murmured gently, choosing to believe that she could hear her speak and know her girls were safe whether she could or not.
Within a few minutes another call came through. "Valeia, they are on their way to you. I've got to seek out Naois; he'll want to be informed. Do you want me to pass on a message? I don't think he saw any yet, he's been very busy."
“Acknowledged,” Doctor Mercy replied, moving towards the sound of the transport trying once again to push thoughts of Naois from her mind. The site of Peter, pale and still somewhat worried, materializing in sickbay with his eldest daughter crying brought a flood of relief, but the far too quiet and still baby girl in his arms brought that relief to a sudden halt. Valeia was already halfway to one of the biobeds as a nurse took the infant from her father and hurried to place the tiny child on the diagnostic table. Once again pushing all the emotion in the room out of her mind, the Betazoid activated the hemisphere and focused solely on Lilah.
At first scan, she seemed to be doing alright, but the slight rattle in her chest as she drew her breath betrayed something deeper being wrong. A more in depth scan of her lungs revealed a mild infection, but for some reason the lung cavity wasn’t able to expand very far. That coupled with the infection was making it very difficult for the little girl to breath. Pulmozine and Dexalin to stimulate her breathing and help oxygenate her blood more quickly and easily were already in the little girl’s blood stream, so Doctor Mercy ran another more detailed scan of her chest cavity and discovered that her ribs had suffered damage and were practically littered with microfractures, making lung expansion for breathing difficult.
A few passes with the osteo regenerator and the little girl’s breathing was already beginning to even out, improving rapidly over the next few minutes. Relieved to see her improving so quickly, Valeia moved to update Peter, happy to find Harley awake and her readings almost normal. Both parents turned worried faces towards her as she approached the biobed, and as she came to a stop beside them, Commander Horn quietly asked, "How is Lilah? What is wrong with her?"
“She’s doing just fine now. She still has some remaining, mild infection in her lungs, probably from a cold or a mild strain of something, but that isn’t too serious. She suffered a few microfractures that coupled with the infection was making it difficult to breath, but those have been repaired and she’s breathing normally now. She’ll make a full recovery, and in fact should be back to normal within a day or two at most,” Valeia reported, knowing that Peter could handle the truth about her condition, and that Harley as a nurse would want to know as well.
<Tag Peter/Harley>
“Harley, you’ll need to take it easy for at least a week, just to make sure there won’t be any complications, but the three of you are doing very well and you and Lilah should be able to go home sometime tomorrow.” Pausing, Valeia smiled and added, “And now is as good a time as any to tell you. You’re expecting a boy.”
<Tag Peter/Harley>
“Congratulations you two. You should try and get some rest. I’ll be back to check on you in a little while.” Smiling at the family, glad things had worked out for the best, Valeia headed back to her office. Seleya seemed to have suffered no physical ill effects from the abduction, and Lilah and Harley were well on their way to recovery, but the doctor wanted to review their scans just to make sure she wasn’t missing anything small. The stress of the sudden medical emergency after working so hard to tie up any loose ends was beginning to take its toll and the Betazoid had to stifle a yawn as she requested the detailed scans be brought to her and sat down at her desk. It had been a very long day, and it wasn’t over.
"Doctor Mercy, here is the report you asked for," said a gentle, familiar voice, but Valeia was so tired she turned and reached out for the report before it dawned on her that the voice belonged to her husband and he was smiling at her. He placed the padd in her hand but his hand lingered on hers. "I have missed you," he whispered to her, causing tears to spring to her eyes as she smiled back at him.
Without a word, she dropped the padd on the desk and was quickly engulfed in a hug. It was unclear who exactly had hugged whom first, but it didn’t really matter. “I missed you too, Naois…so much…” Valeia whispered back, clinging to him like she would never let him go, and in truth she never wanted to let him go again.
"I hope my training sessions did not give you too much stress?" Naois questioned, but the doctor was far too happy to see him to talk about that now. In fact, she often felt flashes of emotion from him that quickly faded, some that did scare her. There were moments of fear and panic that would vanish almost before she could identify the emotion and wondering if Naois was safe would often haunt her until she could feel him in her mind again in the few brief moments of the day when he’d drop his guard completely and reach out to her. But she didn’t want to talk about that right now…she just wanted to hold him.
"I need a favor," he asked earnestly, as she had finally let him go and they moved to sit down on the small couch in her office. "It is very personal, and I do not wish for Donolly or Rampton to find out." Valeia could feel he was very serious about whatever he was going to ask, so she met his eyes firmly, trying to encourage him as she could see and feel his hesitation and embarrassment.
"I nearly drowned on the holodeck earlier," Naois confessed, causing a gasp of shock to escape from her lips. "Rampton of course could not have known. However, I never learned how to swim...and I would like to learn. I am fine in the shallows, and I like water, but my parents never taught me how to swim."
Squeezing his hand, Valeia tried to sort out the confusing tides of her emotions. Fear at almost losing Naois, again, anger, both at her husband for getting himself almost killed, again, and at Rampton since he’d been mentioned, and sorrow, as she couldn’t help him. Swallowing hard, trying to decide what to say first, she went with fear. “Naois…I do wish you’d be more careful. I don’t want to lose you, and it seems like every single mission you’re getting hurt in some way and your life has been in jeopardy more times than I can count, and it scares me every time. I know you don’t exactly tell me everything, and I know you block most of your emotions from me during the day, but I catch momentary glimpses of panic and fear, probably in those moments right when something happens, and you can’t imagine how terrifying it is. I worry the entire day until I feel you open up and let your guard down when you get a moment, and I know then that you’re ok.”
With a heavy sigh, she tired to comfort him a little, as she knew this was upsetting to him. “I know you don’t mean to get hurt or put yourself in harm’s way, but I do worry, and it does upset me that it happens so often. And what were you doing in a situation around water if you didn’t know how to swim? You may not do this intentionally to yourself, but that was careless, and you shouldn’t be taking any risks like that. I know you’re embarrassed about not knowing how to swim, but keeping that information to yourself put you in danger, again. I know it’s a hard thing to admit, but it’s better than getting yourself hurt or…worse,” the doctor scolded, fear giving way to anger for a moment, even as it faded back to fear.
“And…you should learn to swim, Naois, but…I can’t help you learn. I…never did learn myself. I think I used to know how when I was little and lived on Betazed, but once Heather took me to Nebraska…well there isn’t really a lot of water there and we didn’t travel much, so I just never really learned. But…maybe we can learn together?” she suggested, trying to push back her worry and fear, and the slight but still simmering anger she felt and focus on something more practical and helpful. After all, she didn’t want to be angry with him when they were together so infrequently. It wasted valuable and precious time with her husband.
"I was not supposed to get near any water, you know I take great care to avoid injury if possible. My cadet just rescued me, as was part of the training, when all of a sudden we found ourselves in the middle of an ocean. However not before I suddenly started to feel very sick and only wanted to vomit. I suspect Commander Rampton had something to do with it, and I do agree, perhaps I should tell him of my inability to swim."
He held her close to him. "And learning to swim together sounds like a marvelous idea." ~at least I get to see more of you~ he thought with a silly grin on his face. The Vulcan glanced over his shoulder and saw Peter leave with his oldest daughter in his arms, leaving his wife with the other child behind. "What happened?" he asked quietly.
It was obvious that Donolly hadn't gotten through to him and his face flushed with fury when she told him. "Admiral Brahms will have full base co-operation," he seethed for a moment, "I will speak with him later. For now, I just wish to have some time with my wife. I am, after all, off duty and at your disposal." The silly grin appeard. "I am yours for the evening, what is your pleasure?"
Right now, he'd to anything to see her smile and make her happy again. He felt guilty when he upset her, and the guilt reached her as easily as his fears did. Naois gazed at his wife as he let his barriers completely down, holding her hands as he softly kissed her.
